kyon's prior gig as yuuishi in a very snowy town that is like an alternate universe to the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya....it seemed so eerily reminiscent.  everything was very similar except kyon(yuuishi)...it was the exact same character.

Before Kyon was...well, Kyon, he had a debut in the remake of Kanon; The series has the same hilarious tone as The Melancholy, along with a fighting style much like Shakugan no Shana and some scenes so incredibly tragic or touching I cried. And I'm a guy. I really cried...It's a wonderful series. Also, the piano music in it is very professional and a step up from all other anime piano pieces I've heard before. Now one of my favorite series. You MUST watch it.

The personalities of the main characters are very similar (in some cases being nearly identical), and the way they interact is also comparable. For example, Kawasumi Mai and Nagato Yuki. Just watch them and try to not see it.

What if Kyon was dropped into a real harem anime or what if Yuuichi was dropped into a supernatural slice of life anime? Honestly nothing would change because they're essentially the same character just different settings.

Both created by Kyoto Animation at relatively the same time, also the primary protagonist is practically identical to one another, same voice actor too. Both utilize impressive and ingenious takes on their pertaining genres. You will gradually become firmly and sentimentally connected to the characters as they develop.

Both animes star an energetic, near-perfect female lead character who is both lovable and annoyingly confident at the same time with a laid-back male lead character to pick up the destruction in her wake. Though the events in the animes primarily revolve around the female lead, the story is seen from the male lead's point of view.

The protagonists in both series are extremely talents in everything they do - whether it's studies, sports, or learning new things.The personality for both character are also similar - close to the tsundere archetype (though Kirino is not as dere-dere). The male leads are both caring and responsible figures, but they both have to endure the hardships imposed by the female leads.

They are both comedy and they both have characters with "strange" qualities... such as Sousuke having the military thing and Haruhi having the alien, esper, time-traveller thing. They are both hilarious with some romance added in.

They're both funny and in one episode of Haruhi Suzumiya, Itsuki says "Fumoffu" to defeat that one thing that I wouldn't really want to spoil even though it wouldn't really matter because it wasn't that important. This similarity is somewhat random. Sorry!

Both are set in school settings and revolve around the antics of one absurdly eccentric character (Suzumiya and Sousuke) that somehow force other people into the action. Both are also insanely funny and should be watched generally in one go (it's possible approx. 5-6 hours).

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is unlike any other anime out there, but if I had to pick one I found it the most similar to I'd have to say Fulll Metal Panic? Fumoffu. They're both hilarious and original and the characters are quite unique as well. If you like one, you'll most certainly like the other one.

Haruhi and Medaka both have an aura that no one else in their respective shows can compare to. Also, like Haruhi chose Kyon, Medaka chose Zenkichi. Even though they are both normal humans they are the closest to gods or god-like humans. Medaka and Haruhi's power could spell ruin for the world if they lost control.

the relationship between sensei/fuura and kyon/haruhi are VERY similer as the guys regualr people who are realistic and don't believe a lot of things. basicly they can be quite negative because of their personality. and than you have hyperactive idiot girls who believe that ANYTHING is possible, you have to either try or believe. which makes a nice skit as there are like yin & yang to each other to create harmony....or somthing
as for the rest of the class (o, that reminds me, their both school life too), there also a bunch of weird people with "special" features/personalities/powers.
both our heroes wish they werent in the positions there in, getting dragged into their problems and being bothered by them. But alas, they have to deal with it....or do they??
the only difference between the guys are that in SZS the guy is a teacher and in the other he's a student. read more

Likeable tsundere female leads are the strong points of these animes. Haruhi and Taiga shine so brightly they will make you overlook the parts of the story which might be less interesting, repetitive or even annoying. No less could be said about the supporting female characters that are parts of a ''group of friends''. You will go through many different types of adventures with characters in both titles.

A responsible male protagonist finds himself meeting a crazy girl who starts dragging them around into all sorts of situations. While the way the plots of these two animes develop is quite different, the characters share similar personalities, the settings ae similar, and both anime certainly transmit a sense of melancholy into the viewer.

Both series have a character that has god-like abilities and they use these powers to alter the world in order to get what they desire at the moment. Both have other characters that try to prevent these changes from happening.

Also, both of the main female characters are considered "weird", but in Sasami-san, the female lead is a NEET. While in Suzumiya Haruhi, the female lead is eccentric and has an obsession with aliens, espers, and time-travelers.

Bakemonogatari is a strange telling of various events that surround the main character, each of the different girls that he meets is affected by a different oddity. By getting help from a mysterious man named Oshino he manages to help them all from their problems. This is similar to Haruhi as there is great characterization and there are tons of random things happening every episode. This show is very dialog heavy but is very entertaining to watch.

Both are good satires of many cliches and anime tropes. Also, they have a lot of references to other media, and in a good way. To fully enjoy both, you have to switch off the common sense because you're gonna be hurt.

Fortunately, even while making fun of themselves, the two achieve to tell a well-written story that arrives on people hearts.

Anachronistic mystery series with incredibly interesting characters, and a lot of dialogues and monologues, everything presented in the most polished way possible. The mysteries are unconventional and not entirely the focus of the plot, though very well-written and fun, used mostly to develop those characters in eccentric situations. often involving the supernatural.

In The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Shakugan no Shana, a normal boy (Yuji and Kyon) is thrown into a completely abnormal world when they meet a girl with special powers (Haruhi and Shana). They both have elements of action, comedy, and romance; with Shana  more on the action side and Haruhi Suzumiya more on the comedy side.

Fantasy. Subtle Romance. Comedy. Well build "main group". 

Super strong female lead gets in contact with average boy, who is - somehow -  special. Although she needs him somehow, she tends to push him around. Seeing Shana wanting to take off her cloth - then remembering Yuji ... just make me remember Haruhi, taking her clothes off in front of the boys ... until Kyon becomes something special. 

Further Haruhi and Shana look somehow the same ... and behave somehow the same. (Each has her dark side, too.)

Both of these shows similarly combine the "school life" and "sci-fi" genres in order to create a very interesting overall feel. As an added bonus, character designs for both series were done by the same amazing Ms. Noizi Ito, so you're sure to enjoy the familiar style.

Characters of both Shakugan no Shana and Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu are designed by Noizi Ito which gives you a feeling of high resemblance between the two series. When you think about it, the cast of Haruhi seems to be heavily inspired from the cast of Evangelion in character design. Isn't Kyon so similar to Shinji? Itsuki to Kaoru? Yuki to Rei? Isn't Haruhi's bossiness similar to Asuka's? And the whole fighting giants in a parralel dimension thing, isn't it similar to the angels? 

Considering the meta commentary on otaku culture KyoAni productions were doing at that time, I don't think the similarities between Haruhi and Evangelion are a coincidence. And they both just so happen to be some of the most influencial series in anime history.

While the overarching story, setting, genre and themes are quite different, the relationship and interaction between Haruhi and Kyon is very similar to that of Horo and Lawrence from Spice and Wolf. If you liked the character traits of the male and female lead of Haruhi, Spice and Wolf would be very enjoyable. (And even if you didn't, watch Spice and Wolf nonethelss since it's a fantastic show and needs more popularity.)

It might seem like I am recommending based on facts, both have bossy god girls doing things however they want with no real consequences but apart from that and the fact that both are excellent series they don't really have a lot in common. The dialogue is what keeps Spice & Wolf going, the back and forth between the protagonists is incredibly thought out and funny. The plot is also pretty cool since it features economics and not the usual saving the world or killing some bad guy or whatever so besides the fact that there is a wolf demi god girl in it Spice & Wolf is fairly realistic. The reason I'm recommending this to fans of Suzumiya Haruhi is that while it is completely different both in setting and in interactions between characters it is similar in the way you enjoy it. That probably doesn't make sense to most of you so I will try to rephrase: The things that are enjoyable about both series are enjoyable in the same way. So people who enjoy one series will probably enjoy the other one to since they have an affinity to that sort of enjoyment.

Anyways both are excellent series I'd recommend to anyone so I guess there isn't any point in trying to link them together. read more

If you like waiting for a 3rd season of an amazing anime, YOU'LL LOVE THIS ANIME!!! There are also gods, snarky (somewhat analytical) main male protagonists, somewhat tsundere main female characters, with really great chemistry, AND THEY'RE BOTH ADAPTED FROM LIGHT NOVELS!!!!!! (On a side note, both anime adapt half to less than half of their soure material sooooooo...) Am I taking this seriously? Do they really have ANYTHING in common? Well, I'll leave you to decide that, but they are both great series go watch them. :)

Both deal with a group of highschool students as well as a supernatural factor (particularly time travel). I found both animes had likeable characters and a unique plot. If your into coming of age stories with a twist on the supernatural, with interesting characters than you will most likely like these two animes.

Both are about being bored, and being weird to have fun. 
They both center around a group of highschool students who become really good friends (slice of life-ish). They have some sort of underlying sci-fi tones (though it is more evident in Haruhi). The biggest difference would be that Manabi Straight! is less confusing, and much more sentimental.

Now, I know there's going to be a lot of people questioning my sanity for such a recommendation, but I'm going to do it anyway because, quite frankly, there are a lot of similarities between Baccano! and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya that are interesting and scare me just a bit.

First, the stories are not normal for the time and place they are set in. Rather, the activities that happen with the characters during each series could be described as "paranormal". These happenings really do help make some of the characters, and give the "normal" characters defining moments in each series. This parallel between the supernatural and the normal give and interesting spin on something we thought we know, but we just didn't dig deep enough.

As for characters, there are many parallels that can be made. First, there is a definite similarity in Haruhi Suzumiya, from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and Isaac and Miria, from Baccano!. From the surface, these three characters can be seen as flamboyant and annoying, spreading happiness to the groups of their choosing. Though its true that these characters act with different plans in mind, they also produce similar situations. Their situations go somewhat in this order - they plan, they act, they create a problem, they come up with a ridiculous solution, they preform a solution, the problem is solved, and then they plan again. It's a never ending cycle of, what some would say, destruction.

There's also a big similarity between Yuki, from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and Chane, from Baccano!. Though, it's true that Chane starts to show more emotion during the end of the series, both characters have a connection with acting quietly with their own goals in mind. Chane does take a more direct approach, but they both end up solving some problems with violence. Yuki does talk more than Chane at certain points, and her emotions aren't shown much at all, but for the most part, they are alike in many ways.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya takes a lighter approach to the problems, while Baccano! is filled with blood, violence, and a lot of different, strange characteristics, but these series do have plenty in common. The ideas behind each series are different, but if a viewer likes one, the other would be interesting to at least look at. Just be aware that The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is lighter, a bit more childish, and has its hints of dirty humor while Baccano! focuses more on violence, character humor, and darker ideals. read more

-Both male protagonist just want a quite,peaceful life but end up with lots of trouble.
-Both have to deal with alien who come out of nowhere and ruin their life.(and lots of other supernatural thing!!)
-Both animes parody other anime, including very brief yet entertaining skits.
-Different kind of comedy but you guys going to enjoy watching male protagonist being bully around with the girl around them!!

If you guy enjoy watching this, you might as well try watching Haiyore! Nyaruko-san!!

As I was watching Zero no Tsukaima, I couldn't stop thinking about how related it was with Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu.
The first thing I noticed was the relation between Yuki and Tabitha. Those two could be twin sisters. No kidding.
But then I started noticing some other similarities.
In both series, there is a bossy girl that drags a guy into her crazy world. And that treats him like a slave. I still think that if Louise and Haruhi ever met, they would probably be very good friends. Kyon and Saito are both completely normal (big-boobs-lovers), japanese guys. 
In both of the series, there are weird adventures that shouldn't happen to normal students. Haruhi & co. fight cave-criquets, Louise and co. have to deal with water spirits. 
The type of humor they use is looked alike too. There aren't stupid jokes, but there are parts of both series that make us laugh. 
Both animes have a ecchi feeling to them. (BIG BOOBS EVERYWHERE!!!) And they both express it in the same way. 
So, as in conclusion, someone who watched and liked one of the animes will certainly like the other.

The two really remind me of one another. The characters and their dynamics are a notch different with a different premise, but the style of entertainment with the humor and interesting character reactions provide the same sort of effect for me. Not to say that their quality is on par (I'll just let the individual decide that), only that how they provided entertainment to me (comedy, character drama, and such) were on very similar wavelengths.

While Saiki is the level-headed protagonist, Haruhi is not, but the story-telling is similar (due to Kyon). Well if you enjoyed one, you would definitely like the other

Misaki is a very strong character--like Haruhi. She doesn't put up with any nonsense. Although she isn't quite as crazy as Haruhi, Misaki still can be tough. I would put Misaki up against any guy. XD The boy who has likes her, Usui, is really funny. He can be like Jiraiya sometimes. So if any of you like that sort of humor this will definitely appeal to you. Also if you like girls dressed up in cute maid outfits, I highly recommend this!

It's kind of evident that there's some influence going around these two, from Haruhi to Kotoura-san, no wonder taking into account the fame of Suzumiya Haruhi, so starting from the beginning, there's a scholar club in both that investigates paranormal activity, there's espers involved one way or another, even though the club it's about that it's mostly used as a fun kill time for it's integrants and there's some similarities between the characters also, so yeah they're similar, recommended if you like any of these series.

Basically MoHS is a science fiction version of Hyakko with a shorter main story arc. It, too, is about a high school girl determined to get as much out of life as possible, involving her friends whether the want to be or not.

Both have aliens as main characters that seem , at first glance, normal. I also notice that they have a lot of panty shots (no yuri) an when refering to alien names they use the high pitch fast voice ... I'm burnt out!

Bizarre adventure of Haruhi Suzumiya and Bizarre Magicians Academy Wasshoi is similar that they both are bizarre to no end and there is more then enough mysterious/crazy-run off the mill characters in both shows.

Both anime are parodies of already existing genres but executed in a very serious (and very good) manner. I felt the idea of 'a greatness that heavily impacts the world' was very similar, though the anime have a different feel overall.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni addpermalink

If you liked The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, you would find Higurashi no Naku Koro ni to be quite similar, as the atmosphere in both series is the same. Both series start off very ordinary as the characters go through their normal school lives, but as the series progresses, the plotline goes from boring and ordinary to quite fascinating and extraordinary. The whole genre of these two series is practically identical, so I would recommend Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and its sequel, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai, for anyone who enjoys mystery and a litte horror, and anyone who had fun watching The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. read more

The character Haruhi and Isurugi Mio are pretty similar in the bossy attitude kind of way, and they order around this "guy" as if he was they're personal slave.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Genshiken represent club life where the vast majority of all events take place in a single club-oriented room. Genshiken is more laid back and less serious than The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, but they both have a similar representation of a club member’s daily life. In-class situations are rarely depicted, teachers are never mentioned and the vast majority of every episode relates to their club and club members in some way. 

Both clubs consist of a small group of people who end up becoming close friends. Both clubs also have the running trend of being notorious and 'weird' for their own reasons.  

Furthermore, the lead females in either anime tend to follow similar character traits, which include being bossy and being able to talk themselves into getting anything they want. Although the issues of both anime are completely different...it's hard to like one and dislike the other. read more
