Synopsis

Gol D. Roger, a man referred to as the "King of the Pirates," is set to be executed by the World Government. But just before his demise, he confirms the existence of a great treasure, One Piece, located somewhere within the vast ocean known as the Grand Line. Announcing that One Piece can be claimed by anyone worthy enough to reach it, the King of the Pirates is executed and the Great Age of Pirates begins.

Twenty-two years later, a young man by the name of Monkey D. Luffy is ready to embark on his own adventure, searching for One Piece and striving to become the new King of the Pirates. Armed with just a straw hat, a small boat, and an elastic body, he sets out on a fantastic journey to gather his own crew and a worthy ship that will take them across the Grand Line to claim the greatest status on the high seas.

Easily the best manga of all time. The incredibly well thought out foreshadowing, the well-developed characters, the art style, the unparalleled and captivating story, everything about it is just excellent and jaw dropping. Love all the references to real life problems, occurences and literary works from our world. Not to mention all the little details that may not always be noticed by everyone, which are absolutely worthy of admiration. Even after nearly 30 years after the publication of the first chapter, Oda constantly sets the bar high. He really is a one of a kind mangaka that undeniably deserves all of his accolades and utmost ...

It's a pretty good manga. It's just not for me. And that's fine, if some people enjoy it, they enjoy it.

However, I will say my piece. The beginning starts off great, with the East Blue saga being a pretty good introduction to One Piece. We saw our first group of characters, Nami got her arc, and it was well done. The entire series is done fairly well. So why don't I like it. It is just far too long, with little to no stakes. I get that the journey is the point, you're supposed to derive enjoyment from just watching the gang have fun ...

I approached One Piece optimistically. A friend was eager for me to get into it. There's no shortage of rave reviews for it online. I heard time and time again that Oda was an exceptional world-builder. I don't read all of the big shonen mangas, but I know I love a couple of series within the genre, so I had no reservations about the format. I was excited to see what all the hype was about. After reading 500+ chapters, I've dropped the series. I likely would have dropped it earlier if my friend hadn't urged me to make it to later arcs where it ...
