Both series revolve around asocial male leads that are tricked/forced into joining a club. They also have a female lead that drives their male counterpart to perform club tasks and, surprisingly, do a good job while he is at it. They are also both high school comedies with hints of romance.

Both anime have the central plot of solve riddles. Hyouka takes place at school environment, and Gosick between the First and Second World Wars. Gosick has more drama and romance, while Hyouka shows you more comedy and slice-of-life (and even moe) aspects. Gosick has a more elaborated plot, but Hyouka has arcs, so it's easier to watch without getting bored.

Judged by how character setting is almost man-to-man similar, can't refuse that it will make the overall mood and tone similar too. That's how it's happening. The leading male and narrator, Kyon and Oreki Houtarou, are made from the same mold. Average, not standing out, and does not want to take initiative whatsoever in school activities. And guess what, they are getting pushed around by girl of course, The ultimate reason why any straight man go out of their comfort zone. The story of Hyouka revolve around solving mystery, not a grand one, but very well made. Well made enough to be believable, even when portrayed by  read more

When looking at the artwork for Kokoro Connect and Hyouka, the artwork looks strikingly similar to each other, despite being animated by differing studios. Hyouka's artwork is a marvel to look at since it was animated by KyoAni, but Kokoro Connect's artwork is also very good. Kokoro Connect, synthesizes comedy and drama in a very appealing way. It does not rely on straight gags, and it doesn't try too hard for laughs. This is a positive, because it doesn't seem forced like in other anime. The drama is not over the top and does not seem forced at all. There are also slice of life elements  read more

Both are from the same studio (Kyoto Animation). The male protagonist is similar on both series: they want to have a normal high school life until they meet the female protagonist (that is a bit strange). She may change the protagonist personality.

Oreki may as well be Tomoya and vice versa. They have the same seiyuu and behave and think in largely the same manner. The main heroine in both shows is also there to serve as a foil and contrast for the protagonist and the style and tone of the two anime is very much similar. While Clannad is much more serious and dramatic than Hyouka is, there's something for fans of either show to enjoy here.

These series are not about spectacular murder cases, but rather about the mysteries of everyday life. They turn the ordinary into something special, relying on atmosphere and scenery to draw in the audience. The 'cases' (if you may call them so) are small in scale, but both series show the emotional impact that they make on the involved characters.

Kamisama no Memochou has a saying that the dead live on only through the work of a detective or the work of a writer. Hyouka... despite not having as dark of mysteries as Kamisama no Memochou runs along this train of thought to start off with. Both have similar art styles on top of this.

Tanaka-kun and Oreki both like to do things that require the least amount of energy. Although Tanaka-kun takes it to a whole new level and is more of a school-life comedy while Hyouka is a mystery anime. Both the Anime have a rather cute art style.

The way the cases are solved have a similar feeling to each other. Splendid use of music in both series. The narration/introduction of a plot/case also resembles each other in terms of style and pacing.

It is an attractive series, it manages to conquer you in the first chapter with all the supernatural things that happen, it manages a lot of your curiosity and pretends to feed very well basic concepts such as the world that surrounds us, which is reality, and as it really is interpreted and everything from very simple quantum concepts, applied to electrons... we can see the world, but those that we do not see in it, it is not visible to our eyes... without a doubt, Chitanda would be increasing her curiously curious xD, about all the strange things that happen in Seishun Buta Yarou,  read more

Hyouka and Sakurasou have very little to compare regarding their cast and their plot. Both are great in production quality and execution. However, their biggest similarity is that both tackle the thematic element of the "genius". Both series question how unfair it is for people to simply be more talented. Certain characters, like Satoshi from Hyouka and Sorata from Sakurasou, become frustrated with their talents compared to geniuses like Houtarou and Mashiro, who seem to accomplish things as if it were second nature to them. Both also show the flipside of the coin and talk about how even geniuses are nowhere near perfect. For example, Mashiro  read more

Both great animations (similar drawings), both mainly about a boy and a girl, where the boy helps out the girl (A LOT). A club is an important part of the anime, but plays more of a role in Hyouka. Also, a similar atmosphere to both animes. Both have a great soundtrack.

Two series based around school clubs and interaction between its members. Excellent animation, art quality, and use of color. Very good directing style as well. They give off similarly warm vibes, and almost any standalone frame from either can be seen as a work of art.

Hyouka and Shinrei Tantei Yakumo do share some similar points, but are also at the same time quite different. • both stories mainly deal with mystery cases and how to solve them • this brings authomatically to have a very brilliant main character, in both series, who is able to solve them • both are setted into a school background and both have the "club" theme as well • still, both have a noticeable dose of weirdness: STY has of course a strong supernatural genre, and Hyouka has somewhat special scenes involving unknown powers (the girl's curiousity-catchphrase has it easy when wants to pursuade the main chara in changing  read more

Dialogue heavy with focus on the mystery genre. Rather than focusing on one mystery/case it tends to be an episodic style that does one per episode (Hyouka changes a bit later though) Shaft and Kyoto Animation both animate these really nicely as well.

The aura of the to shows are similar. Even if the stories are quite different, but they both have the same slow tempo with a lot of explaining at it's center. They're both mystery shows that keeps pulling you in even though the story telling is slow. The art of Kyokou Suiri is also quite similar to the classic Kyoto animation style of Hyouka.

Both give a similar feeling. Stories aren't alike at all but both share a quiet and mysterious atmosphere. The friendship is important in both. Natsume and Oreki aren't social people, but they finally create a group of friend around them. Plus, both anime refer to a traditional aspect of Japan.

Both are about a school club and have mystery elements. Like Otonashi the mainchar in Hyouka is not very interessted in this club and trys to avoid it.
report Recommended by Madotsuki-chan
Both are mostly episodic anime about a main character who solves mysterie. The two main characters, Houtarou and Holmes, use logic to deduce simple mysteries. The main difference is that Hyouka takes place in a high school while Kyoto Teramachi Sanjou no Holmes takes place at an antique shop in Kyoto. Both shows have a relaxing atmosphere and a small romance subplot.

Both have a similar fashion of a lead male character with a rather dreary, boring life...spiced up by meeting a girl with an upbeat personality that helps change their world views. It also appears the romantic sub-plots are going to work in a similar fashion as well.

Despite of different stories, both have nice art and soft setting and they are about a group of friends from school. I found very similar the relationship between main characters (Oreki and Chitanda, Kazehaya and Sawako) very slow and cute, but Hyouka focuses more on mystery than romance of course.

Both characters are able to solve problems using logic and reason (though in God only knows its that logic is based on video games) the thought process is the same. Also, the protag.'s Whiny Bitch Meter is very low in both anime so they are enjoyable to watch and don't make you want to murder the guy.

Hyouka is an adaptation of the Koten-Bu Novel series, beware that it doesn't have an actual conclusion. It's similarly slow-paced and character driven narrative nestles it into the same niche as Hana to Alice. Hyouka utilises mundane mysteries--which are great on their own--as a backdrop for its characters. Hyouka has similarly high-production values and the same sort of deadpan humour, with distinct and unique characters.

These shows are similar in the sense that they are opposites. The MC in Yojouhan wants a Rose-colored life, while MC in Hyouka doesn't want that. Their journey has something different in it's mind for both of them though~ Both of these shows are about the characters, about growth and love.

Hyouka is kind of like a slice of life version of No Game No Life. While No Game No Life is about competing using games, Hyouka is about solving everyday highschool mysteries. • Both the MC are geniuses that possess high intellect but have a lazy character/nature. • Both animes contain an adventure & comedy element in them. • Both animes will keep you in suspense and anticipates what is going to happen next. • Slight hint of romance I would strongly recommend both anime series as they are equally entertaining in different ways. * Lastly as an added bonus, Jibril made a Hyouka reference in episode 8 of No Game  read more

The art in these two animes are spectacular and very similar to each other despite not being from the same studios. You can also draw parallels between Minko (from Iroha) and Oreki (Hyouka) as well as between Ohana (Iroha) and Chitanda (Hyouka). Under the same director and animation studio, we are presented with a bored, cynical, and generally unsociable male protagonist who is largely uninvolved with his high school life until his encounter with the eccentric and emphatic female protagonist whose request for help pulls them into an adventure they would never have experienced otherwise. Initially, both protagonists are reluctant to help, but continue to find themselves becoming more and more involved and even attached to the people he made friends with.

While I have also recommended Hyouka for season 1 of K-On!, I feel that season 2 is the true similarity. Both series feature semi-episodic stories that build to character growth and a journey of self-discovery and friendships. They are about a small cast in school clubs, and while the club activities are different, the focus on the bonds between characters is strong in both.

Both MC are very simillar in the way they "overthink" any subject of their interest without stopping at how "ridiculous" or "weird" the subject might be, they're doing it without fearing of being judged and that's how it should be. I find that's a very charateristic aspect of these two shows

If you take a look at the premise and synopsis of both shown, they are nothing alike. However, if you start watching them, you'll find that the protagonists of both shows are, at heart, the same: Kirino and Houtarou are willing to open their true selves up, after getting a little push from someone close to them, or someone being curious. If you liked the steady development in characters, or just seeing two completely different personalities interacting with each other and learning about themselves, you'll probably enjoy Hyouka and OreImo.

Although the concepts are completely different the main characters are very similar. That being; Ryner & Houtarou want to spend most of their time doing a limited amount of things and being lazy. They are also both forced off their backsides by each of their own main heroines to do something useful with something that they don't tend to use too often. For Houtarou his detective ability that he never really used because he is lazy like that and for Ryner his eyes that pretty over powered. (Basically the story is completely different but the main characters have slight characteristics that make them similar)

If you are looking for an anime where there is lazy main character, who doesn't like to do anything, then they are both similar in that part. When they concentrate on something they are exceptionally good though and surprise many people. Both take place in High School. Differences are that Hyouka is mystery solving and Touch is about sports. Touch is older but there are some good versions out there.

Okay, this is one weird recommandation, but I thought that there was a few ressemblance between those two show. Both of these show have a surreal feeling, but Hyouka always stay in the rational. The show introduce us to mystery that the main will have to solve. Nanana universe is way more excentric, but Chitanda from Hyouka sure is one crazy specimen!

While having almost nothing to do with each other in terms of plot, both have very similar protaganists that look alike and have considerably apathetic personalities. It deals with a couple of people in a club, with one socially withdrawn, but sharply observant guy and an introverted girl who wishes to change herself. The girl has a good impact on the social life of the guy. Hyouka is classier though, and the animations are gorgeous.

Both feature an introverted protagonist, who joins a club, and makes new friends. While Oreki Houtarou is more into solving mysteries than serving wealthy ladies, if you're like me and love Ouran for its characters and humor, Hyouka is a good choice. And of course, there is a hint of romance too.

Both shows have a similar structure and general tone. The stories are told from the perspective of a "straight-man" main character, who reluctantly gets himself involved in the shenanigans of a curiosity-stricken female lead. The supporting characters also show a number of similarities between shows, and both also offer the interesting narrative quirk of adding the main characters thoughts to spice up the dialogue. Though Haruhi is more upbeat than Hyouka, both make for a wonderfully interesting experience.

1. They have very similar art style and extremely similar crispy and smooth transitions. 2. They both unfold the plot in the same sort of way (although they have very different plots they are both evolved with some sort of mystery), in some episodes it is extremely chilled, but at the end of each arc, it will mind-blow you with all the details of the previous episodes together in some sort of intelligent way.

Two series using the case of the week formula to investigate new mysteries. Occult Academy solves paranormal mysteries in search of an item to prevent a catastrophe, which serves as the overarching storyline ending the series. Hyouka solves harmless mysteries for entertainment as a school club activity, which creates a slice of life storyline where the characters are the focus. The stakes of Hyouka and Occult Academy are complete opposites, but each anime play to their strengths.

School club anime. Both feel quite warm, and are very cozy. They are both fairly episodic, with a small narrative through line that is mostly carried by individual smaller stories and events. Houkagou Teibou Nisshi focuses more on the actual club itself, fishing, whereas Hyouka uses the club as more of an open sandbox for various other stories and mysteries. While their stories may be different, they are both very enjoyable slice of life anime.

Despite the different in genre and setting, this two shows involve a group of friend spending time together, and genuinely building friendships. They both have a similar light feel.

Hyouka shares with Nana Maru San Batsu the underlying theme of how individuals deal with information. Instead of taking a competitive spin on this, Hyouka takes the detective-genre route. It is still about everyday high schools who take apart questions that don't seem to be like a big deal and try to come up with satisfying answers. This time however, the questions aren't coming from quiz booklets but from the students themselves.

Both shows revolve around finding meaning in the mundane. Both have unique perspectives on the themes of romance, friendship, responsibility, and passion. Both have characters trying to learn how to play to their strengths, avoid their weaknesses, and learn from the abilities of others. Both are wistful and optimistic at the same time. Both have well crafted characters that viewers can relate to. Both deal with books and words. These are shows that will appeal to introspective people that love reading or learning.

Both have a group of friends having fun together. Hyouka focuses more on mystery, humor and slight romance while Ano Natsu de Matteru focuses on a story between a few friends and their unforgettable summer! Both are very nice and relaxing as well as very intriguing.

A beautiful story about two similar and different persons at the same time that spend time together and fall in love. Lovely environment.

D-frag and Hyouka both have a central focus on an obscure school club that goes through adventures and bonding time. The MC in both shows are dragged around by the female lead. Finally, both shows do not really have a central story to them, just a group of friends going about their everyday life. However, in Hyouka, they have a more serious/mysterious atmosphere, while in D-frag, the things they go through are mostly for comedic value/entertainment.

The group of characters seem very similar. Also similar pacing/atmosphere+twists

Both of them solve a lot of mysteries. NakaImo has romance in it; Hyouka only has a pinch of romance in it. They both use different methods for solving the problem at hand.

Bakuman and Hyouka really reminded me of each other as they have a similar atmosphere and characters. Similarities: - Two main characters (Chitanda; Hyouka and Miho; Bakuman) look very similar with their hairstyle, they are both a bit timid and I swear they are long lost sisters aha. - Both a slice of life type of anime (with schools). - Both series have two other main characters that have a lovey relationship and are best friends with the other two. - Very similar atmosphere. - Both series leave you wanting more, and for a certain pair to get together. Differences: - Bakuman is based around  read more

Like Free!: Eternal Summer it's centered around a school club. While in Free! it's swimming, in Hyouka it's solving mysteries. The most similar element between Free! and Hyouka are the similarities between Haru and Houtarou. They essential have the same situation, a very talented boy with tons of potential and little motivation. While Haru gains his motivation from racing his friends, Houtarou finds his in a, somewhat Gou-like, girl who is curious about everything. Both animes are pretty light but reach dramatic points in the later episodes. Both are pretty funny. The art style is also pretty similar. If you liked Free! Or were amused  read more

Both have soothing slice of life feels to them, but at the same time contain more mysterious elements.

This may seem like a strange recommendation, but hear me out on this one. Hyouka tells the story of a Houtarou, a high school boy who solves everyday mysteries along with his friends. Digimon Adventure on the other hand has less of a mysteries element, but the connection the characters have as friends has a quite similar dynamic. In the beginning of Hyouka, Houtarou just doesn't want to deal with any other people, but slowly becomes friends the people in his club. In Digimon, we see Tai acting as the main character and he only looks out for himself at first. He too grows closer  read more

If you just read the synopsis these series would seem nothing alike. But they both give off a certain "floaty" vibe, something soft and fluffy, but also a little bit dangerous and hard to pin down. They both contain mystery elements, though they handle them in different ways. The use of color to convey a mood is also very strong in both, and often they use color to tell more of a story than the dialogue or characters themselves.
