I have been much less active these past few months and switched to watching dramas but still enjoy watching anime from time to time. I have also been a very active scan reader XD. When watching anime, I pay attention to music and voices, so having deep and expressive OST is a necessary (unsufficient though) condition to have a very high ranking in my list. I am nonetheless a pretty tolerant anime watcher and like trying new things and genres.

I have been interested in China for many years, and I really like Chinese animation




Here are extended favorites (not in order) :















-Historical + Cultural ; I am very satisfied when I actually learn something in an anime, when I want to get more info about what I have just seen - Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu, Chihayafuru, Nobunaga Concerto (great insight in Japanese History), Kaze Tachinu, Dororo, Rurouni Kenshin ;

-Epic + Heroic ; I like when an anime depicts a whole saga, where charaters evolve a lot, when major + global issues are at stake, but not in a too naïve way - Arslan Senki, Shoukoku no Altaïr (one of my all time's favorite !), Ookami to Koushinryou, Nejimaki Seirei Senki: Tenkyou no Alderamin, Legend of Basara ;

-Musical ; OST is the number one criteria for me, so of course I really pay attention to nice musical animes, or animes in which music truly plays an essential part - Nodame Cantabile, Sakamichi No Apollon, Zetsuen No Tempest (among best OST ever), Shigatsu Wa Kimi No Uso, Given ;

-Dark animes with fair - not necessarily happy - endings, clearly more Seinen-type where main characters are sometimes ready to do what needs to be done - Death Note, Code Geass, Banana Fish (dark, creepy, but in the same time... Beautiful!), 91 Days, Kiseijuu ;

-As I said, Chinese anime, I love and understand to some extent the language, some of them have extraordinary storyline, Art is really different and you have this "Chinese humor" or "Chinese touch" you would be able to notice even if the language was not Chinese ; Mo Dao Zu Shi (one of my first, and still definitely one of my favorites !), Tong Ling Fei, Meng Qi Shi Shen, Quanzhi Gaoshou ;

-And last but definitely not least balanced Romance anime (of all kinds), not fan-service and Ecchi-based, I mean realistic romance with elaborated characters and personalities (I think some BL are very good in this) - Doukyuusei (amazing art and music, realistic story, I can't recommend it enough), Meng Qi Shi Shen, Sayonara no Asa ni Yakusoku no Hana wo Kazarou, Kareshi Kanojo (cool romance with extra-low budget), Yuri On Ice + some of the ones I already mentioned before...



-Ecchi, Loli and Harem stuff of all kind, totally irrealistic representation of human body (male & female) when not justified and motivated by the plot. I don't have anything against Isekaï in general but a lot of them have too much ecchi and there is nothing I dislike more than a promising anime in cool universe being polluted by this kind of stuff. You can watch the disgusting Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo no Dorei Majutsu (I should not talk about this crap here) to get practical illustration of what I just said ;

-Angelic + naïve female characters who do not know anything and whose only "utility" is to be kidnapped - So long for women emancipation btw - Fruits Basket, Kimi Ni Todoke (not BAD but extremely boring and frustrating) and many other more, but these two are very representative.



N.B. : I've also read tons of Chinese/Japanese/Korean web comics that aren't in MAL database, so don't think of me as just an anime watcher :p
