Kenpuu Denki Berserk

Afro Samurai and Berserk are both extremely violent series that have a really similar noir and obscure feel about them despite having very different settings. They have deadly apathetic lead characters that once set on a path will not be stopped no matter what obstacle they have in front of them. Both anime offer superb animation, incredible shows of swordplay and you will most certainly enjoy the flow of blood in both of them. If you liked watching one of the series I highly recommend trying out the other.

Both of these animes have quite overpowered main characters, whose are just slashing their way through dozens of enemies. They're both kind of introverts as they don't say any unnecessary words. The storyline is truly epic - the one, where you just sit down and watch, watch and watch with your mouth open.

Bloodshed. Gruesome action. Supernatural beings. Troubled by their pasts, one must keep fighting and one must keep suffering. What must they do to survive? Their fate lies on the battlefield. While these are all similarities between the two anime, “Berserk” focuses on the main character, Guts, and his journey with a mercenary group called “Band of the Hawk”. The main character, Afro, in “Afro Samurai”, on the other hand, is on the hunt for revenge to look for the person who murdered his father.

Legend of Legendary Heroes is Berserk lite. It doesnt have the same level of violence, profanity, grit, philosophy, or insanity as Berserk, but the plot and character dynamics are very similar. Legend of Legendary Heroes never gets as hardcore as Berserk but things get surprisingly intense and there are some heavy moments - dont let the title or beginning of the series fool you

Berserk and Densetsu share many similarities, most notably having an ambitious silver haired main character who want to be king. Both shows deal with betrayal and friendship. Both highly recommended for people who enjoy action shows with a dark theme.

Shockingly feels so similar and yet has it's distinct similarities to give it that new refreshing feel.

From friends becoming enemies, to the main character becoming known as a monster and suffering from hard times. If you liked Berserk then you'll definitely like Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu.

Similairites:
+ The main two main male protagonists have almost identical relationships throughout the shows
+ Set in similar medieval worlds dealing with wars, men striving to become king, and some supernatural elements
+ While Berserk definitely has many more, both have dark and gory moments
+ End on two of the biggest cliffhangers in anime history

Differences:
- Legend of the Legendary Heroes has comedy as well as drama whereas Berserk is just all drama
- The female protagonists are a little different in personality and relationship to the secondary male protagonist
- Berserk is much more mature and graphic especially in sexual content

Imagine Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu without "magical eyes", JRPG designs, ideas like "the one who yells louder wins", tsundere women and stupid idealism (hi Sion). You with me so far? Now, imagine Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu where there are dozens of great warriors like Ryner on both sides, where political intrigues, plots and schemes are far from uncommon. Imagine battles of epic proportions and war on the medieval fantasy world, where winning side is decided only by commanders intelligence, number of troops, their morale and available resources, not superpowers like Alpha Stigma. Do this and you've invented Berserk.

both is very violent and has blood and gore berserk was produced in the 90s so its art work isnt that nice but the story is comparable to those  shonen like naruto.hellsing is a very recent version of the original and its a lot better than original ,so all the hellsing fans should also take a look at berserk,its worth your time

Both have one of the most badass MC's in anime history, strong female lead(s), great action scenes, lots of blood and gore, rape-filled backstories, superpowered monsters, influences from Christianity, rivalry/betrayal between friends, strategic warfare, well-developed characters, great plot and last but not least: they're both amazing anime.

One word: BLOODY! Both Hellsing and Berserk are similar in a way. Both of the two protagonists have a similar dark past and grown to become strong as F**K. I mean Alucard is like a devil himself, and Guts was given the name "hundred man slayer." Anyway, if you love one of these series, I can guarantee you'll love the other.

Anime that indulge the viewer in extreme amounts of blood and gore with a badass MC that doesn't hold back. A must-watch series.

Both are set in dark fantasy settings with supernatural horror. Rather cynical in nature, human life is worth little, people often die and the protagonists often blur the line between a cruel anti-hero and an outright villain protagonist. 

Also, excluding some creatures (e.g elves in Berserk), monsters are mostly either humans or of former human origin.

These "adult only" anime are indeed similar in how they mix strong elements such as violence, gore, sword fights, and sadistic villains with romance, sex, and drama.
In both anime the main characters are a fearsome swordman and a strong-tempered fighter girl, which is one of the reasons why the relationship between Jubei & Kagero instantly reminded me of Gatsu & Caska.
Needless to say that both Berserk & Ninja Scroll are great to watch.

Monsters and lots of blood and organs flying around. A main char who wields a big ass sword. And the nudity it contains (mild). this might not be your cup of tea. but i recommend watching it anyway. It's like ninja scroll but more extreme.

Both series are really old and feature gore, demons/monsters and nudity. You would pretty much categorize these as "adult only" and both are really fit for people who are fans of the GAR genre.

Both are gritty action anime from the 90s with plenty of gore and nudity. They also contain gripping storylines involving a lone wolf protagonist adjusting to a group. Despite being gritty and somewhat realistic, they also have supernatural elements.

Guts is essentially a Kenshiro clone. If you like the pragmatic nature and insane destructive power of one, it goes without saying that you'll like the other. Both series also feature ridiculously powerful enemies who must be overcome by the protagonist.

Berserk lacks HnK's brilliant sense of humor, however.

Both feature similar ideologies and long journeys to find a person who wronged the protagonist but without a clear motive for revenge. Both fight countless enemies with little mercy and grow stronger slowly over said fights, much unlike shows where characters jump in strength. Both feature strong quiet main characters and likable antagonists who started as the protagonists best friend.

Take Kenshirou from Fist of the North Star, without his overpowered martial arts, but instead give him a giant overpowering sword able to cut down dozens of people with a single stroke. Put him in a middle-age semi-fantasy world, and let him act as a mercenary under a strong and charismatic general with the strategic ability of Lelouch from Code Geass and essentially you have Berserk in a nutshell. 

Similarities:
- both are very mature anime
- they share a strong leading character fighting against powerful enemies
- they both have romance and epic fights
- they both have a revenge theme (which is however more pronounced in Fist of the North Star)

Dissimilarities among the shows:
- Berserk is military centered and has a cast of several recurring characters
- Fist of the North is mainly focused on Ken alone and has more shounen elements to it
- Fist of the north has many more episodes to enjoy read more

Both have an extremely similar vibe. For a big chunk of both anime timelines, they are set in medieval times, so there's soldiers, kingdoms etc... The main characters from both series are extremely powerful, so a lot of violence is spread throughout the entire thing. A lot of characters from Bastard!! look like they belong inside Berserk and vice versa.
Bastard!!, though, includes far more nudity and perversion than Berserk, and is more of a comedy.

Both are reasonably serious shows with a focus on political intrigue, back-stabbing nobles and how cruel people can be. But Berserk is set in a fantasy universe with demons and monsters, with a lot of battles, whilst RoV is a historical anime that takes place in France, documenting the beginnings of the French Revolution.
Also, Griffith looks awfully similar to Lady Oscar (all that long, fluffy hair...)

While Berserk is a fantasy anime and Rose of Versailles is more focused on romance, both have to do with political intrigue, nobility's schemes, betrayals and kingdoms in crisis. Miura, the author of Berserk has stated that Rose of Versailles has been one of the many inspirations behind his writing.

While Berserk is much bloodier than Rose of Versailles, both series are about a nation in conflict (the nation in Berserk is in war, the nation in Rose of Versailles is on the verge of war). Both put focus on the backstabbing that happens within the nobility on a regular basis (this plays center stage in Rose of Versailles and takes a very important back seat in Berserk). Neither series shy away from showing the harsh truths of life. 

Berserk has the "rich people are awful" perspective shown from soldiers, with Rose of Versailles has the "rich people are awful" perspective shown through rich people. 

If I'm not mistaken, Kentaro Miura cited Rose of Versailles as influence on the political aspect of Berserk.

Both are war stories with characters who you get to see grow througout their lives. Berserk is obviously more fantastical, but both focus on the human element of war, and let you see the gruesomness that happens from all perspectives.

From what I've read about Berserk's creator, Kentaro Miura, Berserk is essentially the world's best and most popular piece of Ladyhawk/Rose of Versailles/Fist of the North Star crossover fanfiction, with bits of Devilman thrown in. The golden age arc, which the original Berserk series adapts, borrows heavily from the motifs and character archetypes of Versailles no Bara, and even as a casual viewer, I can see the parallels, particularly if one has also seen the relatively obscure film Ladyhawk, of which Miura is a professed fan.

Essentially, if you liked the golden age arc of Berserk, you'll probably like Versailles no Bara, and vice versa. Berserk is bloodier, and features slightly less in the way of shojo tropes, owing to its fusion of shonen elements into its manga 'DNA', but they're very similar in most ways that I feel matter. read more

Badass main characters slaying monsters with side characters that keep growing as characters and become stronger.Guts and Hyakkimaru are both indifferent towards people but kind. They are also both inflicted by a curse. If you are a gamer, Dororo anime is basicaly like the Witcher.

I'm surprised im the first one who made this suggestion. Goblin Slayer is so much like Berserk.
Just like Berserk, this is another Brutal, Dark fantasy with Blood, gore, rape, and a pretty cruel world. 
The leads are also very similar in the way that they are both are ruthless and motivated by revenge. They both show no mercy to their enemies and both have a very dark past. They are also not that good at socializing with others.
There are more examples that i will edit once more episodes come out.

Ok, so this rec is kind of a stretch but I think still worth making. The main superficial similarity is that both are dark gory stories with lots of blood and brutality. On a deeper level however they are similar in that they both focus on relationships and telling the stories of long time rivals. Both also end on cliffhangers. While these two titles are similar, keep these key differences in mind:

Both shows are hard to watch, but Shigurui is even harder to watch and understand, and it's less accessible to the common viewer than Berserk is. Also Shigurui is more historical, less supernatural, and requires greater concentration and patience.  read more

The two main characters of each anime are very similar. Irako from Shigurui and Griffith from Berserk are both men who have come from a very low status and share the goal of ascending to the top. Likewise, Fujiki from Shigurui and Guts from Berserk are both very loyal men who always get the job done. Both anime are also very dark containing lots of violence, blood, gore, and sex and should be intended for more mature audiences.

Both series open on a conflict within the very first episode and then spend the rest of their running time in a flashback that doesn't quite reach the point at which the opening began, much less resolve it.

Both series have a highly ambitious, highly androgynous, highly talented and highly ruthless young man as a prominent character. Both of these characters undergo similar fates and make similar transformations to achieve their ends.

Both series take place in something resembling a grounded, brutal reality, but heighten it where appropriate to make the drama hit the viewer even more viscerally. In Berserk's case, this manifests as dark fantasy, whereas in Shigurui this manifests as sword techniques that strain plausibility enough to not be realistic, but stop short of being magic. read more

Both series focus around a couple of people who have a strong friendship bond and would do anything to help each other until something or someone else interferes, with the resulting actions causing an immediate shift from strong friendship to hatred. Not to mention both series also start with the end and then show the events leading up to what happened at the start.

These shows look very different from an outside and at first you may wonder just what in the world makes them alike but once you go further and look at them from the inside you will see the connection.

For starters both shows start with a bit confusing beginning but then we go into flashback mode and we see what had happened and led to such beginning which is making more sense now.

Both series are about strong friendship which later got turned into hatred and fight between each other.

Both shows have monsters, lots of blood and deaths as well as some romance.

The main difference is that shows happen in different timelines and that in Berserk main heroes are males while in Ga-Re Zero those are females. Berserk also has more nudity. read more

I wouldn't be surprised if Ga-Rei: Zero was deliberately modeled on the structure of the original Berserk anime.  The two may seem totally different but hear me out.  Both start "In Medias Res" - in the middle of a savage battle - then flash back to the beginning where the origin story of two warriors is told, Yomi and Kagura in Ga-Rei: Zero, whereas it's Guts and Griffith in Berserk.  

Both fight together and learn from each other until the leader, Yomi, is injured beyond any hope of recovery.  While wrapped in bandages, a glowing red orb comes alive and grants her the power to heal herself and accomplish all her dreams, but it requries sacrificing all her former friends and associates along the way.

Like Kenshin, it is a psychologically realistic exploration the motivations effects of the killing life on one's mind and state of being, albeit in a very different ways. Likewise the drive and effect of ideology are explored but instead of the deadening of the heart and soul as we find in Kenshin, in Beserk it is the corrupting effects of power and ambition.
Both have compelling narratives, and while Beserk may not have the lavish animation we find in Kenshin, it is still an immersing and engrossing watch.
And both have compelling narratives albeit in highly different settings.

The two works depict a particularly worked main character living in a world without mercy that has taken away his childhood.
With violence as the only defense against a tragic and inevitable destiny, these two heroes will each meet a woman they will try to protect from all their beings.
I'm talking about two of the biggest tragedies of Japanese animation. Brutal, beautiful, upsetting.

Both are concentrated adaptations of a flashback sequence in their respective parent mangas (for Berserk it is an adaptation of the Golden Age arc while for Rurouni Kenshin this OVA adapts the Remembrance sequence in the Jinchu arc). Both series leave stuff out from the manga but also add stuff in, giving each piece a more stand alone feel. 

In my opinion, the story and characters of both series are incredibly well developed. Guts and Kenshin are somewhat comparable, both are youths who are very good at swordsmanship and join a certain group of warriors. Romance plays a role in both series and they end in a similar emotional manner (events between them vary WILDLY). Both build up to their finales with foreshadowing, and they deal with heavy themes too. To me at least, Berserk and Tsuikou-hen give off a very oppressive and dark vibe, and comedy is sparse and becomes non-existent by the end. Berserk and Tsuikou-hen have quite brutal actions scenes that honestly unsettled me at times.

Berserk is much longer than Tsuikou-hen, the former is a full 25 episode series while the latter is a 4 part OVA that can be edited into a 2-hour movie. Berserk is a dark fantasy set in a fictional universe while Tsuikou-hen is historical fiction set during the Bakumatsu.  read more

Ok guys are the story lines similar? Kinda, a big army vs a little army. Are the settings the same? No, one is medieval and the other is futuristic. But what realy makes these series similar are the characters. Griffith=Lelouch because they are the tactitian  and guts=Suzaku because they are the soldier. Both have similar plots of trust issues, romantic tension, glorified battle scenes, and commanders trying to get revenge and rule the world.  If code geass fans pick up berserk skip the first episode, watch it last. and berserk fans try to stay with the main characters and dont pay attention to the school students. read more

Both shows take GAR to a whole new level. Who doesn't like seeing buffed men fight with each other right? Both of these are filled with fight scenes and manliness. Though Berserk is more bloody so if you're a pussy you might wanna reconsider. They're both awesome though so you don't wanna miss out.

Both Basilisk and Berserk have a dark, violent, emotional and tragic scent about them. They are both dark and mysterious. The stories on the other hand, are not much alike. Basilisk is focusing on the rivalry between two ninja tribes and Berserk follows the life of Guts, the Dark Swordsmen. But none the less, I am sure that if you like the one, you will like the other due the feeling they both emit.

Xin is basically the teenage version of Guts except that the entire series focuses heavily on him growing and improving into a future general whereas Guts just did it in a few episodes.

Both are very action packed, deal with the concept of military, strategy and death (Kingdom does a lot more with this) and are just fun to watch.

 To truly understand just why Shin Angyo Onshi (SAO) *IS* the Korean Berserk, you would have to read the manhwa (which, by the way, arguably has better art than Berserk). Seinen excellence. The SAO movie is best described as being like Berserk's first episode: before the flashback arc that filled in the blanks... just without the other 24 episodes. Both anime are, in essence, incomplete manga/manhwa teasers, but this is far more true in SAO's case since the back-story of its lead, Munsu - whom is VERY similar to Guts from Berserk in terms of VENGEANCE motivation - only gets revealed further down the line.

The good news is, unlike Berserk, SAO's manhwa is finished. IT HAS AN END. The bad news is, you have to go into the anime aware it will only serve as a cool introduction. And in case you're curious just how similar SAO is: betrayal, rape, revenge, smiling pretty boy nemesis, amazing flashback arc. That's all I'm saying. read more

If you like politics and military tatics in your anime these two are for you!
-They are both historical dramas set in the middle ages
-They both have a huge focus on tatics and politics and have a secondary character who serves to explore these themes (Griffith in Berserk and Narsus in Arslan Senki)
-They are both realistic although they have some fantasy elements (Berserk is stronger in this aspect)
-They both show a war were the MCs have little chance of winning.

Although they are similar Berserk in its final episodes is very fantasy focused with some (greatly designed) demons

FF7 was said to be similar to Berserk in terms of characters with a story alike. Cloud is basically like Guts whereas Sephiroth is to be like Griffith as for example. It's great to see Berserk because Berserk has the best story out of all of the manga/anime and it too has sword fights as good as FF7. The only difference is that Berserk is pure adult oriented than FF7 because of its contents but its worth a try.

Both tell the traumatizing tale of a military unit and the hardships that follow. The main protagonists in each anime are also very similar.

Fuedal era-like settings. Great storyline that draws you in and awesome characters. Story is so in-depth, that you think your farther along in the series than you actually are.

Yu☆Gi☆Oh! Duel Monsters GX addpermalink

Yugioh GX can be described as Pokemon meets Magic meets Berserk to fans in general but as for Yugioh fans, more like Yugioh meets Berserk meets Evangelion. The dimension world arc is somehow similar to Berserk in a similar fashion where it gets dark and creepy along with people becoming sacrificed. Judai's relationship with his friends and co is a reminiscent of Guts and Griffith but in a shonen manner.

Both deal with kingdoms, battles and the right to rule. Both have fantasy elements such as demons and monsters. Both have a strong well thought out story and complex characters.

Although the setting in the two are very different, the flavor is close to one another.  With lots of blood and violence in both, neither are shy about showing cruel moments.

Akatsuki no Yona addpermalink

You won't believe how how many similarities you will find between Akatsuki no Yona and the famous Berserk by Miura Kentarou - plenty.
Su-Won - a very handsome and intelligent antagonist of the series has a lot in common with Griffith. They both have very similar characteristics, are great warriors, strategists and emperors. Both are destined for greater things.
Hak is very much like Guts, tall, dark-skinned, strong, wields a powerful weapon and has earned a title of the strongest general in the kingdom.
The love triangle between Yona, Su-Won and Hak resembles the same love complexity between Casca, Guts and Griffith.
Casca and Yona are strong women protagonists. Both being protected by men that are in love with them.
All in all, both series focus around similar emotions, noticeable revenge drive, changes in the society, journeys, new world order, supernatural powers and fantasy features. read more
