Both involve highly intelligent people generally outwitting others, but whereas Death Note was involving a killing spree and utopia, Liar Game is about trying to get out of a game of, well, lies.  The artwork is sort of similar, too, and I personally think Akiyama is more intelligent than Light because Akiyama generally has his plans run right from the get-go and has already factored most outcomes, whereas Light relies too much on others' reactions.  Akiyama's reliance on reactions is more like putting the last brick on the castle; castle's already complete, but a perfectionist just needs that one last brick.

The main conflicts run like complicated cat & mouse games, with psychological strategies and out manoeuvring between genius characters. There are more puzzles in Liar Game, but Death Note does have it's moments. However Death Note is supernatural with an anti-hero main character while Liar Game is realistic with a naive girl/con-artist protagonist main pair. They have quite a similar detailed art style, though Death Note is more gothic.

Both involve highly intelligent main characters, though Amamiya reminds more of L then of Light. The Characters are facing problems that they have to solve using their brain. Liar Game is more focused on tricking people, but when you liked DN (like me) it's quite possible that you might like Liar Game too.

Death note goes in the direction of fantasy where Liar Game goes into reality.

Death note is a detective battle to find out each other moves before one get kills

Liar Game take theory into practise by using maths and science to a row of games where survive to the fittest is fundemental to avoid bankrupcy to the player.

A fairly obvious comparison. Death Note and Liar Game both deal with psychological issues and have a battle-of-wits plot line. Both male leads progress through the story and show the genius workings of their brains as they overcome each obstacle thrown in their way.

A game where you have to,decieve people in order to win money and if you fail you will be in debt... The main character is an innocent girl whi gets dragged into this game. She will need a genius in order to be saved. Luckily this kind of person appears. Just like in death this character is a genius who will amaze you with the strategies he can come up with. If you like deep tactical strategy games that will amaze you one after another, this is a perfect manga for you!

If you're into Death Note and Bloody Monday or if you like strategies, plans, detective, smart protag and psychology then Liar Game is it for you.

This story follows a scrupulously honest college student named Nao Kanzaki, who receives a package containing 100 million yen (about US$1 million) and a note that she is now a contestant in the Liar Game Tournament. 
She meets a con artist, Shinichi Akiyama, who's a major in psychology. He helps her out and becomes a contestant of Liar Game.

The main characters are intelligent & cunning. These two mangas are arguably some of the best psychological & thriller mangas available. The plot is engaging and ropes you in from the first chapter. Both the series have insanely well crafted cat & mouse games and clever xanatos gambits.

Both series have a high school student protagonist who's fed up with the degradation of society and uses the series gimmick to try to revolutionize it. Death Note is great for anyone who thinks LOST+BRAIN was on to something, and LOST+BRAIN is good for anyone who wants just a little more of what Death Note had going on.

Mc is basically sick of society and then randomly finds the means to change it. Light finds a death note and Hiyama learns about hypnosis. They use these to try and create a new world and also eliminate everyone who stands in their way. Light tries to get rid of L and Hiyama tries to get rid of Kuonji. They will stop at nothing.

Lost+Brain takes so much inspiration from Detah Note that you could say that even a fan fiction is more original than this manga.

Death Note and The Promised Neverland are two of the most intense and suspenful works of the whole industry that they were created in, their storylines is heavily detective orientated, with both calm moments and conflicts happening, and through the eyes of the main characters, while everyone else also contributes towards the actions taken, basically all of the events unfold and are manipulated like chess, based on how they decide to proceed in order to have the best possible outcome for their own interests. Both of these worlds are from the most fascinating environments ever created, the characters, storyline and virtually all other aspects.

‘Non battle battle series’. Much more mind games involved instead of traditional shorn jump fighting action. Very interesting plots with twists, mysteries etc. gripping stories and good characters.

Both of these manga have a different tone to them especially early Promised Neverland.
The physiological mind games at play in both of these mangas are great and even though they're different in many aspects I genuinly think that most people will enjoy both.

Yakusoku no Neverland has similar pacing to Death Note and an engaging cast of characters with amazing brainpower, much like Light, L, and Near. The plot is equally dark if not darker, making this series a strong spiritual successor to Ohba and Obata's  masterpiece. I absolutely loved Death Note, and Yakusoku no Neverland gives me the same sense of anticipation and drama.

The series take opposite perspectives (Death Note has a villain protagonist, Monster a villain antagonist) in a reverse whodunit scenario, where the reader knows all along who the villain is and watches as the (comparatively) heroic figure has to piece together evidence and catch him.

These two are often compared together, and that's no surprise - they are both psychological thrillers that provoke discussions of morals and ethics, nature versus nurture, and life and death. Death Note deals primarily with the issue of justice and who has the divine right to take a life; Monster questions the equality of lives and what it means to save lives, whether they deserve it or not. With two main protagonists, Tenma Kenzo and Yagami Light, working non-stop to find their enemies, Johan Liebert and Detective L, the clock ticks on with a cat-and-mouse game, as various characters find their fates intertwined with that of Tenma and Light. Death Note is based around supernatural elements, such as shinigami and a mysterious notebook (well, it's fairly obvious at this point), taking place in modern Japan. Monster, on the other hand, is more realistic, and takes place in 1990s Germany, drawing on historical events and the social and political impact of those events. The difference in demographics is clear (shounen and seinen), but the atmosphere of both is dark and terrifying in their own ways, built around mysteries and complex characters. Monster, just like Death Note, is a thriller about a man pursuing a serial killer, and both villains (Johan Liebert and Yagami Light) are straight-up geniuses. The point of view is different - one is from the hero and the other from the villain. But both make a good work talking about ethics and morality.

Monster and Death Note alike follow a "battle" of sorts between two brilliant minds, but where Death Note falls short midway through the series, Monster just continues to get better and better. If you liked Death Note, Monster is essentially a seinen, more fleshed out version of it. If you liked Monster, you'll like the first half of Death Note.

Despite being nothing alike, both follow the investigation of a genius serial killer from different standpoints, both the detective's and the killer's on the latter and only the detective's and that of those implied on the first one. I only realized the similarity with around chapter 22 of BM.

There is a mastermind with an initial (K and L). There are genius on both sides of the fighting line attacking with intellect and sleuth. Bloody Monday has more action and blood than Death Note and DN has more brains. There is mystery regarding both the protagonist and antagonist and their plans. Death is brought up on both and justice.

Well to start both are battles being waged out in a mental battlefield, and each side are trying to tip the favor to their side which delivers intense scenes and moments that can not be easily forgotten. Pretty interesting read which keeps you wanting to read the next chapters until your done.

I instantly thought of Death Note when reading Bloody Monday. They are both thrillers that involve a lot of elaborate plans in order for both sides to reach their objective. BM has more action, while DN has more mental planning. The main heroes and villains of each series are very intelligent. Both even have characters that have code names such as L(DN),and J and K(BM). They are both full of twists that make you want to keep reading until the very end. Luckily they are both relatively short. The art style is even very similar.

Both manga involve a mastermind who has a plan in mind to kill a lot of people, although this is for very different reasons in both of the manga. But this is exactly what makes this so interesting. After reading one of these stories you should read the other one to see the other side of what might happen to our world. If you liked one of them I highly recommend reading the other one as well

You want gore and killing? You got it!

Both series have two intelligent protagonists who are fighting against each other. In Death Note, it is between Kira and L while in Bloody Monday, the protagonist is actually on the good side, like L and the antagonists are like Kira, who kill for "justice". You got two sides tryin' one-up each other through with fearsome tricks and traps. Both are extremely thrilling and exciting.

If you're into Death Note kinda stuff, like detectives, terrorists, strategies etc. Bloody Monday is for you. 

The story follows a high schooler who's secretly a pro level hacker and how he gets himself involved with International affairs and terrorist attacks and threats. 

Although I'll admit the story would've been a little more better if the the protag and his friends were to be adults instead of teenagers. But regardless I treat the protag and his gang as adults because i like it that way. It's upto you, him being an high-schooler is not that bad it's just my opinion. 

I'm a little surprised why this manga hasn't been animated. Anyways enjoy reading! read more

A prevailing theme in both series is the notion of moral justice: Is it right to kill those who are unhealthy to society? It is a rather conflicting statement as often the answer lies in the subjective. This is profoundly highlighted in both series through the characters, views of the general public, and moral consequences and decisions the protagonists have to face.

Both deal with school students (Yagami Light / Azama Shou), who after gaining a special power, decide to take justice into their own hands to create a better world. Though the personalities and methods of the protagonists are different (Death Note has intense 'battle of the minds' dialogue and Kira who kills all the criminals whilst Akumetsu has gorey action and Akumetsu - a 'terrorist group' publicly killing corrupt beaurocrats) it's enjoyable to compare one after reading the other to see different peoples' approach to the same subject.

Both are about a high school boy with a unlikely, supernatural power they will use to "improve" the country by killing everyone that is evil according to their judgement.

Death Note's kills have their focus on your every day murderer, rapist etc while  Akumetsu has it's focus on politicians, CEO's: what's wrong with trias politica, economics, the pharmaceutical industry etc.

Death Note is more of a psychological blockbuster and a thriller focussing on mind-games while Akumetsu is a good action. 

Akumetsu is especially cool to read if you are into politics and know a little bit about the economic crisis we have, or have seen Michael Moore's Sicko. It makes you want to go "whoohoo, you go Akumetsu!" read more

These manga both bring the worst of human kind up. They let you realise how bad some people actually are. The main characters both dedicate their lives to bringing down this evil, they even go as far as killing them because most of the time that is the only way.

but both protagonists have a driving desire to fight against evil, even if it means killing people. and the biggest similarity is 
that the mc has a superpower which he uses to change japan.

Onani Master Kurosawa is basically death note, except about masturbation. The main character looks and acts exactly like Light, down to his"Just as planned" face. The idea is crude, but this short dj title is an excellent parody of the DN style. A must read for anyone who liked Death Note, but never took it too seriously.

Both of these manga come from the same writer/artist combo (who also made Bakuman), and both have a somewhat dark tone.

Both manga have supernatural beings (a shinigami in DN, an angel in PE) that give the protagonist their powers (arrows and wings in PE, the Death Note in DE) and follow them around. Also, the protagonists of both series are aiming to become God.

Mind games, Machiavellian methods, and mass murders. If you found either of these titles interesting, you might want to also try out the other one since both involve unorthodox detectives hunting down serial killers. However, MPD Psycho is definitely not for the faint of heart with its sexual imagery, explicitly gory death scenes, and mentally unstable characters.

They both remind me strongly of each other and at the same time they are completely diffrent. Both main characters (Noa and Light) are both Geni, they both have someone who they fight(L and the weird Cop) they have females who follow there orders, and a gigantic plans for world change. Yep, and at the same time the feeling is quite diffrent, but I think you will like one if you like the other.

For those of you who wander aimlessly seeking for something similar to the thrilling story of the Death Note series, well, you're in luck because Hakomari not only fills that void, it expands it.

While there are countless dissimilarities between the two, I'll focus on the similarities which I'm sure would cause Death Note fans to try this series.
Hakomari captures Death Note's thriller and mystery aspect not through the battle of impeccable prodigies, but through an extremely intricate plot built layer after layer in each volume. Actually, we get a battle of wits in all of the volumes, but this is not what makes Hakomari stand out of the rest of novels/manga, it is the plot (or the premise) through which the characters move, in other words, it is the premises (the universe/world) of the novel.

While I have completely no idea how Eiji Mikage composes his plot, reading through the volumes with give you an idea to how the architecture of this novel is constructed. The author lays the framework and a rough conclusion of a volume before filling out the details of the story, that is to give him some sort of guide (a premise if you will) for his plot. 

He rarely contradicts the premises he set unless you are hairsplitting/nitpicking enthusiast. Every turn or event in a volume is connected to a premise set forth or declared in a previous volume (in other words, everything that would happen, happened for a reason, and isn't of plot convenience) and the conclusions at each volume surprise you as it unravels Mikage's masterful play of plot lines.

While the main difference between Death Note and Hakomari is the romance aspect, I'd say that If you liked DN, there's a very high chance of liking Hakomari since every twist leaves you surprised and impressed. read more

Geniuses, psychopaths, mental and psychological warfare, strategic thinking, powers granted through a supernatural entity that potentially shape the world according to the user's wishes/desires/ideologies, both these series have these elements in common.

They both maintain a heavy grim mood throughout the story with little comedy. They both have a lot of mystery and twists. Both main characters are willing to go to certain extreme extents to live in what they see as the ideal world, even though their views are fundamentally opposite. They present accounts of people who acquire supernatural abilities that can change the world - either more directly (Utsuro) or indirectly (DN) - but end up being psychologically consumed by the power or their lack own lack of control. In a way they both touch upon the "be careful with what you wish for" trope (DN in a much more subtle way since Utsuro deals directly with those wishes and their corruption).    read more

First of all be careful that while Death Note is a manga, Hakomari (the short name) is a light novel. If you can't sit down and read a light novel, then please ignore this recommendation.

In both stories, prodigies with incredible skills of deduction play a deadly game of cat and mouse with each other, in a mysteriously supernatural setting. These are stories with complex story line and go in deep to explore each main character's motives.

After reading Death Note, I thought to myself that a series that matches up to its fantastic thrilling murder-mystery does not exist (that is not to say that Death Note is free of plot-holes because it is full of partial ones, but it manages to achieve its premise), that is, until I discovered Hakomari. The unpopular Light Novel surpasses Death Note in its best aspect -- complexity.

While the two are fundamentally different -- 'a story of a genius who accidentally comes upon a murder notebook', against 'the story of a rather normal folk who is dragged into a bizarre reality by mere circumstance', there are a lot of similarities between the two that are simply too eminent.

The most obvious similarity is of course the mystery aspect. Both series to progress the plot through events that can be described as carefully plotted. In Hakomari, this is achieved through a scattering of accurate and truthful red herrings throughout the plot that gets even more impressive as the author reveals the reasoning behind each one. The difference in this is, in Death Note, the viewer/reader is a spectator to the plot who only follows the direction of the plot, while in Hakomari, the reader is dragged to the pace of the story as you try to figure out the happenings of the story.

Do take caution when reading Volume 1 though as the beginning is intentionally confusing due to its atypical progression. But it'd be a shame if you'd drop it because of that because Volume 1 has to be the single best story I've every read. The immense entertainment value it brings will only be available to those who are patient enough go through it. In the end your efforts will be rewarded.

Generally, if you liked Death Note's thrilling mystery aspect, you'll definitely like Hakomari, especially volume 3 & 4 since it probably bears the most semblance among all of the arcs since it features a direct battle of wits with rules accurately written down.

The only downside that might cause some to misevaluate Hakomari's greatness is that it is too complex that some readers have trouble understanding the entire plot. Again, that is not to say that Hakomari is perfect. Like any show, I could make a list of endless plot-holes and unrealistic instances, but given that Hakomari is too complex but very well delivered, it is indeed a masterpiece and Death Note fans would probably enjoy this a lot read more

If you're looking for some detective fiction, then Death Note and Shinrei Takumo may be something to consider. Both series adapts a main character who has unnatural talents and a special gift. There is a decent amount of mystery and suspense with thrilling plot twists in both series. And at its core, we find out how twisted their story can become when certain events are connected.

First time making a recommendation, please excuse my poor English.

Both stories revolve about the true meaning of justice and the fine line between wrong and right. In Tokyo Ghoul, it is a struggle in the protagonist's own mind between his  ghoul side and human side, as well as his past and present. Whilst in Death Note, both protagonists represent justice in a different manner.

The artwork are well done and have a similar sinister feeling, with unique character design and strong contrast.

What I liked most about both manga were the large amount of plot twists. The stories are unpredictable yet logical, with loads of information to digest and organize, sometimes leaving questions open for deduction. Since they are of dark and realistic genre, they might not be pleasant for people who like happy endings, though. read more

Neither the stories nor the settings are similar but the main characters give off the same vibes.
Shirou acts like Light: organized, proper, and uptight. No maniacal laughs though. He also takes issue with the L-like Kurokichi. Kuro is weird, mysterious, "all-knowing", somewhat impartial and aloof, just like L. He even has dark circles underneath his eyes and also has a kind of food fetish (milk in Kurokichi's case) Ririko looks like Misa with the hairstyle and gothic outfit. She's also pretty useless. Same thing. The characters of Shirokuro Kitan might as well have been copy-pasted from Death Note, otherwise heavily influenced by it. It's too suspicious.
Overall there's a dark ambiance around both of these manga titles. I suggest you read Shirokuro Kitan with the Death Note characters' voices, it makes the reading experience so much more awesome. read more

A battle of the brains, mysteries, violence, action, excellent artwork, if you like any of these elements you're bound to find some interest in either Spiral or Death Note. While they both have completely different stories, both of the main characters are highly intelligent individuals able to plot out plans to get things their way. Although the differences between the two are rather minor, surprising plot twists and events are bound to pull you into either Death Note or Spiral: Suiri no Kizuna and leave you wanting for more.

The development of the main characters in each of these series', despite going in different paths, branch from similar mindsets. The themes of nihilism are palpable and very heavy at times, making for a truly dark (and not just in the "dark" sense of many TV anime) and compelling breakdown of our main characters, similar to that of Light Yagami.

This is a great story with very interesting characters. The characters get lots of details and development. The world is unique and the main character is one of my favorites. The plot mostly revolves around carnivores and herbivores coexisting in a world with human like animals. The herbivores fear and look down at the carnivores. The carnivores have to fight their instincts and coexist. It may sound weird, but it is a extremely well written manga. The concept may sound weird but just give it a try.

Super Smartphone and Death Note are two Shounen Jump manga where the main character is a highly intelligent high school student who seems to be bored with his life when he gets a mysterious item with impossible abilities, with someone there to guide the main character into using it. Some people have even started calling Super Smartphone "Death Note 2.0", since MC uses it for what seems to be for the benefit of others and there's a lot of inner narration to spell out his deductions. Nothing crazy dark has happened yet unlike DN, though.

Pet Shop at first seems to be a light manga with a dark streak, but as one completes the series they find that the message is, in essence, exactly the same as what the chillingly accurate Death Note is saying.  If you like Death Note for the issues it brings to light, you'll love Pet Shop of Horrors--and vice versa.

In the manga TISTA, we have a young girl-Tista-with special eyes that allow her to see blocks away, so she can kill people "for the better good." She was trained to be an expert assassin and hone her abilities under the Catholic church, until she eventually set out into vast NYC, NY. During the day she is reclusive, college student Tista. By night, she is Sister Militia.

Now, in Death Note, we have Light Yagami, suffering terribly from boredom. He soon finds the Death Note of the shinigami Ryuuk. Things pass, and the serial killer 'Kira' is born. 

But, these are just the basics, and a small introduction to both manga. So, how are these similar? For starters, they both have the serial killer/assassin thing going on with the protagonists. They also have 'special eyes,' but in Death Note you have to, in a sense, 'buy' them. With your life. 
There's action in both of them, and both protagonists have expert detectives-who come off a little eccentric, one more so than the other-after them. Also, both Tista and Light are living double lives with different names.

So, in all, yes I would recommend TISTA to any one who enjoyed Death Note. Besides the much more pronounced religious themes in TISTA, it's pretty similar to Death Note. They both make you think. And the question of 'What they're doing-is it truly evil?' lies in the pages. read more

-"Death" and "Those who deserve to die" are the principal themes.
- They are both shonen
- They both have some psychological, supernatural, and adventurous twist in it

And of course, they are both very enjoyable!

Both are serious, realistic manga with an edge of the supernatural which feature teenage protagonists with strong senses of justice but loose senses of morals who come into contact with supernatural forces over life and death. 

In Death Note, a teenager obsessed with his own justice comes into possession of a Shinigami's (Reaper/Death God) notebook which allows them to kill people when they right their names inside, and steal their life years. Similarly in Aku no Higan (Beyond Evil), there are seemingly demonic dealers in life and death who bargain for human's life years with money, favors or punishments and a teenager finds himself in a contract with one of these demons.  read more

Both have Shinigami and a sort of detective story, but that's the only real similarity. Style and tone are entirely different.

If you love Death Note - try Cloud   ( aka Kuraudo )   This is a new manga but it reminds me of it a bit.    The main character is a young man who is highly intelligent - one might call him a genius - who is putting his brains to use in a sort of crazy - devious sort of  way.   Both main characters like out-thinking their opponents and seem to be toying with and manipulating people and situations.  Both characters seem to like to play with the whole of society even and pit themselves against authority.    If you like manga with very intelligent characters give it a try. Complicatedly similar. Two characters; one is a serial murder with a goal to be the top of her kind, the other makes a life of killing murderers while on a search for the former character. Includes same psychological theme.

The main character is smart like L but in shinrei tanatei yakumo it is due to his eye and he also eats sugary food after he thinks about a case. He looks a lot like L and even his attitude is similar. The story line is about crimes but in death note it is more realistic because shinrei tantei yakumo has ghosts and spirits.if you read shinrei tantei yakumo it will definitely remind you of deathnote. They are both really similar and enjoyable so if you like one you will like the other.

Same kind of ego in the main character and both are kinda tricksters and manipulators. Death Note is obviously darker and Gamble Fish has more comedic characters. I enjoyed them in the same way, love to watch the puzzle and try to figure it out before they reveal the answer to me.

Both stories have to do with the line between "Good" and "Evil" in the respect that in both stories, someone is having someone else killed seemingly randomly. In Ikigami its the government, in Death Note, its a kid who wants to be the Government, or a God.

In both series, there's a cat-and-mouse like atmosphere as detectives are interested in seeking the MC. Both series adapts psychological scenarios as the MC faces difficult choices under stress. They also get involved with various characters that serves different roles throughout both series. I recommend both Tsumi to Batsu and Death Note to anyone interested in a psychological story of testament and wit.

The plot is quite similar to Death Note.The only difference between The Miraculous Notebook and Death Note is that in Shigeru Mizuki's story there are no Shinigamis (Death Gods in Death Note), and the origin of the notebook was never explained.

Both are dark, death-centered manga that involve shinigami and are supported by a really good artstyle.
While Death Note is a psychological seinen, Defense Devil is a more typical shounen.

Two highly intelligent protagonists with different views on how the world should be fight each other. Not physically, but with their intellect, through strategy and mind games. In Death Note it's more clear who the bad guy is while in Legend of the Galactic heroes both sides have legitimate arguments and it's more up to the reader to choose which one to support. Then again, some readers choose to support the evil side in Death Note anyway, as he might be wrong but he still has a charisma. Of course in Legend of the Galactic Heroes, both both protagonists from both sides have their unique charisma. read more

Highly intelligent but maybe slightly irresponsible (understatement, both of those) main characters get into a position of power thanks to involvement of supernatural -  a god of games/god of death getting involved in their lives. Both series have multi-layered mind games of protagonists againts difficult foes. While Death Note is very seriouis, No Game No Life is more comedical.

Drawn by the same mangaka, Death Note and Hello Baby involve criminals and death, providing an entertaining read. Hello Baby, an one-shot, brings more focus on the main characters themselves -- especially Kin's relationships with his girlfriend and "younger brother" -- while Death Note is more action-oriented in with a supernatural element (shinigami). There is still a good amount of action and characterization in both though, set in today's Japan.

Both are  action packed and give off a very intense vibe. The character art looks similar and you can see some of the same expressions between the main characters when they have that evil smile across their face

All you need is Kill will be a strong manga if it continues on it's current path

Though both protagonists appear to help for justice, in fact they are evil in the inside. Both have contracts with demons and use writing instruments to bring out their abilities.

Both titles show characters that rely more on strategy, intelligence and cunning rather than brute force, shear determination or "The Power of Friendship" to succeed.

If you enjoy an intelligent manga then these two are for you. These titles are very smart and are very detailed and most important of all no overpowered teenager who can destroy entire mountains or planets with a single super powerful finishing move

Admittedly, Death Note and Ouroboros are only similar at their core; they are both dark crime-drama manga series. However, both maintain this core really well. While Death Note uses the supernatural to explore man's dark nature (as well as its flawed protagonist), Ouroboros has realism and seinen-maturity on its side to do mostly the same. If you liked Death Note's atmosphere, Ouroboros would be a good fit.
