To begin with, I think MAL should put mediocre as #4 and decent as #5 when it comes to rankings.
Anyway! First review for this Manga in 2017.
Imagine a really cool premise, but an author that allows the protagonist to become ridiculously overpowered for no real reason. Imagine a manga without any threats or suspense. Imagine a manga where there was decent character buildup in the beginning, but during the later chapters it just turned into ramblings about "training" and completely one-sided battles.

Oh, there's also a harem. Did I mention the harem of girls who love the protagonist only because he's the leader? Did ... I mention the elven sex slaves who join the ranks and forgo their grudges because of "training"?

This is a manga with an interesting premise, but a lackluster story developed by the author.
There is no character development.
There is no suspense or chance for enemies to even challenge the protag.
There is no surprises, twists, or great plot points.
It's just a mediocre story about a guy who kills stuff and gets women.

If you're looking for something deep, then this is definitely not the manga for you. It has an interesting premise and fairly decent art, but is crippled by the characters, lack of story, and harem bait.

The main character Rou is too OP to take seriously. His personality was interesting to begin with, but slowly devolved into wish fulfillment character he has very sketchy views on morality. The rest of the characters aren't all that special either.

The harem he has is mostly forgettable personality wise. Literally, their characters are cliche cardboard cut outs who do nothing to enhance the plot, save Mi. I liked Kichi and ... E, but they are not the main focus of the series.

In short, if you don't like wish fulfillment fantasy that revolved around an OP main character, then this is probably not the manga for you.

With that being said, I do enjoy reading it for fun, but I have to turn my brain off first. There really isn't an ongoing story as far as I can tell (might be different for the Light Novel) and it mostly seems to equates to Rou spending his days either fighting, eating, or spending time with his harem.

Finally a manga that breaks out of the mainstream "human" hero/antihero genre, and lets us focus on a monster as main protagonist.

RE:Monster is a fantasy RPG manga that centers on Goblinrou as the main protagonist,
a human reincarnated as a goblin. He has to learn the harsh life of being a monster and evolving to bigger hights as he gains that valuable exp.


Story: 8

The story in itself is a bit mainstream like most rpg genra these days, one that would be closest to this one would be the mangsa "The Gamer" for the RPG element and "Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu" for the reincarnation part. ... But in in its base it still a story of a growing monster.
It has mature elementes with killing and suggestive themes. So it is a shounen manga tipping over to seinen.

Art: 8

Pretty good art, not much else to say about :3.

Character: 9

The MC himself has a interesting backstory, which hes reincarnated self benefits from.
He bends over the tactical/calculating personality, typicaly keeping his cool and only does stuff if necessary. The rest of his flock start a bit monotone, but begin to get more personality after a while.

Enjoyment: 9

I really enjoyed reading this manga and can not wait til the next chapter comes out.
Since it is hard to find manga with monster protagonists. Those who like monstergirls might enjoy this just for the monstergirls aswell. :3

Overall: 8.5

Overall a must read for those who want to taste something else then your average human protagonist, and love fantasy/ RPG mangas.

Re:Monster is a very easy and simple story. The story begins from strech due to the MC's reincarnation. From that moment the new life of the MC begins to develop its path and continues to grow on doing so.

Reasons why Re:Monster is a Strong 8:

- It's a good story, even if the plot isn't that grand or deep in the beginning.
- The MC is not a idiot. He is a logical thinker and has a quick understanding of things around his new life as a goblin.

-It contains some ... RPG features. so if you into that genre, it is even more enjoyable to read.

ReMonster started out ok, it was a bit boring but it moved along at a decent pace and the development of the civilisation was interesting. The protagonist got rid of the goblin's rape camp and life generally improved for them. Then within literally three issues it descends into harem group sex and the main character capturing humanoids to turn into drugged up sex slaves to be raped. Apart from being generally repellent it comes entirely out of left field as the MC has spent a big chunk of time removing that system. Its also at this point you realise every issue is the same story ... but at a slightly higher power scale. Pity, it could have been good.

One of the most cringeworthy shit shows I've read in awhile. Themes of Torture, Rape, Slavery, Unnecessary Nudity, etc are all prevalent and the norm in this manga. It might as well be listed as fantasy childish murder porn. Terrible writing, horrible leaps of logic, empty character progression and zero background context. Some vague mentioning about a previous life where the MC had psychic powers and was stabbed? Beyond that, nothing.

This Harem shitshow has a strange kind of reverence for torture and rape. It's honestly very disgusting how they present various gore porn immoral acts in a lighthearted and silly way. It's like, "Haha I'm ... flaying this guys skin for info but rly just to make an example for others and keeping him alive as long as possible to maximize his suffering! Hahahaha.. So anyways.. FAN SERVICE BOOBS HAHA GONNA RAPE SOME BITCHES! OH IT'S NOT RAPE IF I DRUG THEM FIRST KAY?! HAHA! Ok back to leveling up gaiz! REMEMBER DON RAPE DA GIRLS CUZ IT'S IMMORAL KAY?!" Followed by more fan service, murder porn, intellectually devoid dialog and more murder porn.

Besides that? What other sins does this shit show exhibit?

#1. HORRIBLY choreographed fight scenes. Like true garbage tier. Close ups of faces shouting their shallow motivated catch phrases with zero background art. The first real large battle against a huge army (1000+) has a few boulders run over two knights and a captain struggling behind the now encircled invisible opposing army. The MC's companions that the show has focused on building up to be strong? Literally one or two pages showing them ready for battle and then nothing. No fight scene. No intensity. Boring garbage. Thousands of soldiers against garbage goblins and it feels like they were fighting stick figures with toddler brains. My little cousin could choreograph a better doll fight than this.

#2. Rehashed mundane theme. It's basically a poorly written shit version of Overlord and similar tales.

#3. The plot is riddled w/ fan service/borderline porn but no actual substance or progression. (Redundant I know)

#4. The dialog and thoughts of all characters are as shallow and uninspiring as the overall story itself. The MC barely questions his reality and there is zero context to his persona in his previous life outside of a strange reference that he was psychic. ??? Wtf? Ok... elaborate? Is there a prequel to this shit show? Please god say no.

#5. Glorification of rape and objectification of women on a level that is simply absurd.

#6. No fucking logic. The world somehow has meta knowledge of "classes" and "abilities" and other rpg elements like levels. Wtf? Is it a game then? Is there no questioning any of this stupid shit?

Re:Monster is, without a shadow of a doubt, the single purest distillation of escapist power fantasy media I've ever encountered. This shit is literally just "guy shows up to fantasy world that's good at everything and never loses ever, gets every ridiculously overpowered ability in the universe and fucks every hot babe that crosses his line of sight".

And for that, it's a pretty good time.

I'd compare the experience of reading this thing to the experience of leveling up/getting new gear/progressing in a bog standard RPG. There are no stakes, the characters all exist in service of the protagonist, and the prose is beyond beige. Almost ... every chapter SOLELY consists of the main guy describing exactly how he's constantly demolishing every enemy he comes across + fucking every babe he comes across (they like it and he has a big dick btw) + explaining every new ability he gains + explaining every "strategic" move he makes in explicit detail.

Explicit, /painstaking/ detail. Pages upon pages of text just explaining what new powers and titles he's acquired.

In a way, this extremely plain and straightforward progression is sort of satisfying, dullness in its storytelling notwithstanding.

Nothing suspenseful happens. 50 chapters in and the overarching narrative beyond his (and his clan's) personal progression is all but nonexistent.

Still a good time though, despite all of that. Re:Monster is hyper-aware of the power fantasy that it is, and is more than unabashed about it. It's very indulgent in every aspect of this guy's absolute ridiculousness, and for that it's actually enjoyable.

Just don't expect anything beyond that.

Never before have I read a story, that is so obviously the writers own wish fulfillment fantasy.

The story starts out pretty good and is actually legimitately pretty interesting. The MC has flaws, and there are both downsides and upsides to what hes going through. His character is somewhat interesting and he has reasons for his actions.

This quickly changes though and it turns into whatever mess the author was able to string together. It ends up as a sort of really short summary of what the MC did whatever which day, and what he ended up gaining. Theres nothing driving the plot and the characters development. ... If anything the character is dedeveloping. His character is actually managing to become less and less interesting the further you read in the story. His reasons for his actions suddenly dissapear and he goes against his own beliefs, but theres nothing said about that, and he doesn't even seem to notice himself.

The quality of the writing seems to follow the trend of bad writing somehow getting popular because people are interested in the content behind. And I can follow that, but the story quickly loses it's interesting content when the author turns it into a bland and meager plot that is driven by his own fantasies. It's clear that the author has comitted the basic mistake of inserting yourself in the protagonists role.

But even though I say all this, I would still say you should give it a read. It's solidly interesting for at least 10 chapters, and it doesn't have all that many chapters as a whole either, so it's not like you waste a lot of time by reading it.

Rou's got a magic d*ck which forcefully plunders the hearts of young maidens.

Kichi's got a d*ck that was born for Rou to use.

Mi's got a d*ck and an obsessive love of Rou since day one.

Walline is human yet loves Rou's green magic d*ck.

Jii is old and got cuckold by Rou, yet still adores him.

... Sato is female so is obviously in love with Rou.

Aoi Kirimine was in love with Rou before Rou was Rou.

Emery is female (see above).

Sei: female, Rou, above.

E is ugly, so naturally she gets handed to Kichi.

As the characters evolve the story devolves. From character-piece to power-grind to goblin erotica. And don't get me wrong, I like a bit of goblin erotica as much as the next guy, but Re: Goblino is some pretty bad erotica:

"teh penis in, out, in, out, Rou so big strong s*xy green, goblin god, no human jesus, christ. Done he finish, me finish five million times, since rou so big strong s*xy, green goblin, I finish more than he, because he green big strong s*xy, I super hot but nobody has ever touched, me. Because im so precious and hot and have high standard, but he green strong s*xy so it fine, he is better than me, yet im better than everyone else, Shrek so strong green big"

That's the extent of the erotica. The most offensive bit is the fact that Rou doesn't share his s*x slaves, like, my brother, these are community s*x slaves, why are you f**king them all by yourself?!? Poor man Jii has been pinning for an elven ride for half the novel and little Rou decides to grow three meters, piss around the entrance of the s*x slave dungeon, and expound righteously about how only his penis is fit for the heathen elves. That sh*t ain't fair. And not only does he monopolize the s*x slaves but he also f**ks every other female in the vicinity, be it human, goblin or tree thing it gets d*cked. My gramps Jii is a tragic hero, imagine spending nineteen years of your life creating children only for one of them to grow up and castrate you, damn sad.

I don't know what I was expecting to be honest. 1/10

This was very disappointing. It had a good idea and seemed to be going well however the mc became far to powerful to quickly outpacing the interactions he has with possible opponents. Many things I was looking forward to initially such as actual conflict and depth building with humans turned out to be nothing and it feels like the story devolves as it continues. In addition I did not see a harem tag when I started this manga but it is needed considering that is now 80% of the mangas motive. If your looking for harem with no depth then this is a fine manga ... to read however I stuck with it hoping that it would turn into something with deeper aspects and it continues to go further away from that.

The MC is special in the way that he is able to absorb enemies abilities and make them he's own. I've always hated this kind of power creep, as they essentially become way too strong without any effort. It would have been much more interesting if the MC had used he's own intelligence to overcome problems, and see how the world would have reacted to an intelligent goblin, and instead we got a generic and bland story.

That isn't my only problem, the biggest one is that there is no story. The story is stuck in a loop, kill, eat, and evolve. There is no story ... development apart from that, and with no character or world development, the story falls flat and becomes two-dimensional.

I hate harems in general, because they always have an MC that is as bland and generic as possible, with no development at all. The relationships never goes anywhere, and it's not mean to go anywhere, so they can continue to sell merch of your favourite side-chick. It is the absolute worst genre that exist, and it always leads to piss poor stories with no substance.

I actually guiltily liked this story a lot, at first at least. The main character is OP and kind of whats to kill everything he comes across in the beginning (besides other goblins) and then it devolves into a everybody wants his d*ck.

My main issue *spoilers*

is that he goes from sort of helping the human women in the beginning be free from being breeders and sex slaves of the goblins to keeping a bunch of elves and others for the same purpose. Except it’s all ok because drugging them to the point where they beg for sex makes it consensual, like drugging and coercing ... someone into asking for it suddenly makes it ok. I’d honestly have less of an issue if he didn’t try and justify it, impairment and/or captivity = no actual consent can be given.

The manga is plain old wish fulfillment and its pretty fun when reading for that, I just couldn’t let go how much the above bothered me and it kinda killed my want to continue reading.

The concept itself is pretty fascinating, but unfortunately is a concept that already been seen. The only twist that I found fascinating is that the main character reborns as pretty much the weakest creature you can find in standard rpgs. It also has an interesting evolving system that would equate itself to a normal ranking system.

He is an OP character, so there hardly isn't any challenge for him. He usually saves his moves as the last trump card.

However, his development overshadows other characters completely. Quite dissappointing. Mi and Kichi weren't that bad, since they were there in the beginning, but in the end ... it turns into a half-baked harem, with characters that were just.... there.

My greatest regret is that he wasn't born as a kobolt. Note that Kobolts are dog humanoids, so naturally they're cute. Would have been 10x better.

Otherwise, the MC has cool character designs that even I can't deny.

I started out really liking the manga it had an interesting premise and from my name you can guess why i gave it a look. But i regret it I made a rule for myself don't interact with anything with re: in the title i wish i stuck to that when i dropped it the show was just harem and he accationaly feels like slaughtering people in entirly one sided battle for boose and then takes all the women and makes them his slaves.

Its just a harem manga its all just harem and this entire manga as far as i can tell is just poorly ... written story, characters, and just ends up focusing on sex.

... fantasy light novel re:monster

i read three volumes in this novel I'd say this one is really good. It takes on a new way of narrating (which might not please everyone) that gives insight into the story as if you're actually reading the MC, Rou's diary. Due to that, it's quite repetitive at times, but that makes more sense than that something new and unique would happen each and every day! I mean, most novel include long time skips, because of that limit, but since this novel is meant to resemble a diary, there'll always be an entry, even if it's sometimes really short, or really ordinary.

Boy, I wish Goblin Slayer would show up to end this travesty.

MC is from a world where people have super powers or something, and his power is being able to obtain other powers/abilities by eating body parts from other beings with powers. He is stabbed by a crazy bitch and dies. He then wakes up as a baby goblin, the next day he grows up to a pre-teen goblin and goes out to the woods to hunt, he befriends a dumb goblin (most of them are dumb but this one is especially dumb) and they form a team to hunt unicorn rabbits, the MC ... is the brains, the dumb goblin is the muscle, they take down rabbit after rabbit, they are unsopable, boy do they shine on the battlefield. The MC fashion a prison shiv out of rabbit horn, attains some useless skills from eating the rabbits and then befriends a female goblina who is basically his biggest fan, who'd have guessed the first female lead is going to be all over the mc? They keep killing, getting abilities, fashioning better weapons and armors, they evolve into hobgoblins, and that's where the manga gets it's success from, monster evolution (rip off pokemon much?).

And that's literally all there is to it, they just keep killing and evolving and eating and getting better weapons till they are literally gods. Oh there's also goblin rape, but the girls eventually like it because the MC is a literal god, so it's ok.

Once upon a time, there`s 3 manga that stoods out as related to "Goblin".

Goblin Slayer, Tenshi Slime (read more then you know why), and Re:Monsters. (The Killer, The God, and The Leader)

Re:Monsters is another isekai manga (which has been way too many), that reborn into a lowest rank. Goblin, well that sucks.
Soon after that, MC had an ability to gain skills and stats just by eating "anything". Yes "anything". But after that, they can evolved into more higher rank, just like games.

Aside of character, Rou, which is MC, is quite OP character, likeable. As well as the side character, Kichi and E. Further ... character would be a captured humans but since everyone said, its a typical harem bs manga, but i tend to ignore. Others were a typical cliche character.

Main majority is too many character to explain with, but of course thats normal for a whole lead of Goblin army. And also since its a Mature manga,there`s no problem with violence, gore and probably might be a lot of hentai (i mean not really visual, but there`s a LOT in just 28 chapters.)

I don`t know about "where-do-i-progress" kinda manga, but as I said, I still enjoy reading it till now (even though most of translator dropped). Recommended.

The premise was really intriguing, I was sick of the usual reincarnation stories where they become a cute genius kid that can do anything and get whatever he wants, so being reincarnated into a goblin was certainly a new approach. Sadly they went down the same route anyway, with cheat like abilities the MC becomes the strongest and does whatever he wants.

The art was certainly different but kind of plain and boring, didn't enjoy it. Though the human girls, the elvish girls did look cute. Action scenes were a pain to follow and the facial expressions were almost non-existent beyond angry and horny.

Characters were ... annoying. There were far too many important characters and it was very messy trying to follow all the relationships in it, the MC had a harem for seemingly no reason other than he is the MC and even the relations between his tribe and other tribes were stupid and came from nowhere.

I honestly really enjoyed it at first because of my initial excitement about him rising up as a goblin and reforming the tribe but that died off fast and I quickly became uninterested in what would happen next.

1st ever review since I wanted to explain my sadness at a possible amazing story with interesting ideas, especially since you don't often see ones from the monsters perspective, but after a short while its just a cycle of:
-I'm amazing
-Get skills
-Get women
-Get stuff
-get better

again and again.


... Just a wish fulfillment fantasy that has one of the most OP MC's. There is no tension, you always know he will do everything right and perfect.
All this is over just a few months, ridiculously fast.
Random backstory about future...mutant..stuff? Not really explained other than to give him a vague reason for being so OP.
He must have 50 different 'trump cards' he could pull out.
Also the writing is god awful. Diary format as explained by the others, but it just weakens it further. Everything I do everything awesome and everyone loves me. Lots of gimmicks for lazy writing, and its so stale, it went from interesting to just wondering how much more OP he'll get.

One thing that's not too bad is the art, though that's not usually to hard to find these days. At least the author was able to profit from the recent "Isekai" trend.
Those who call this wonderful either have the mindset of the author or haven't been exposed to much good content yet.

After reading 29 chapters, I've had an enjoyable reading experience so far. After leaving the manga scene for about a year, I was instantly drawn to this series and glad I picked it up. From day one I was sucked into the story, and by day two I was annoyed that I had to wait for the next update the following month.

Re: Monster appeals to the rpg gamer genre. The concept of the manga has been seen in several other series: the protagonist dies in another life and reincarnated in another. The story dives into the daily events of his new life ... in a world that he strives to make use of to the best of his ability. Although the concept is not original, the author of this manga does a notable job in bringing something new to the table that I personally have not seen in detail yet. The series introduces a thorough ranking system. Simply put, if a certain character reaches a certain level cap he or she can choose to rank up to the next class. Not only is this system intriguing, but also helps move the story at a steady pace.

Every manga, no matter how good it is, has some kind of flaws. The amount of detail that Re: Monster puts on a page can seem somewhat overwhelming to those who tend to glance over the smaller details. However, that is something insignificant compared to the main problem I find with this series.

It is right for this series to have the mature tag as there will be several panels that may not seem appropriate for a younger audience. The major fallacy that lies in the manga is rooted in the sexual encounters with the lower class of the mangaka's created society. In this society, there are slaves. The problem isn't about slavery itself, but how they are treated in a particular manner. These individuals are drugged and eventually give in to their oppressors. The main character tells his followers that when these drug-induced individuals "consent," it is okay to interact with them for pleasure. The issue in this is that this author's perception of consent is horrifically distorted. Understandably it is a work of fiction, but the message that it emits to readers is that it is okay to have a sexual encounter with someone who is in an intoxicated state.

I will undoubtedly continue to follow the series. The good qualities of Re:Monster undoubtedly outweighs the bad. However, it is worth pointing out the conflict that arises between what is socially acceptable in the story and what is acceptable in reality. Readers like myself can be internally conflicted between this very issue. Therefore, the addressing of it helps ease this conflict and hopefully allows us to continue the incredible experience that this series provides to readers.
