Synopsis

Taiki Inomata, a third-year student in junior high, attends Eimei Academy, an integrated school with a major sports program. Having joined the high school badminton team, Taiki tries to attend open practice as early as possible. But no matter how early he goes, he always arrives second in the gymnasium. The person one step ahead of him is Chinatsu Kano, a first-year student in senior high and Taiki's crush.

Chinatsu is the rising star of the basketball team, and the gap between her and Taiki could not be greater. Although Taiki is a decent badminton player, his popularity is nowhere near Chinatsu's, making it even less likely for his feelings to be reciprocated. However, in a strange twist of fate, she ends up living in Taiki's house!

Wanting to become a worthy match for Chinatsu, Taiki pursues the same dream as his crush: to partake in the Nationals. Taiki starts training harder than ever before, all for the sake of building a strong relationship with his new housemate.

Preliminary (104/? eps)
This manga is a masterpiece, no doubt about it, and pushed me to write my first ever review. I will keep my review more general as to not spoil the story as I want everyone to go into this manga with an open mind.

Many of the romance manga I have read have felt, to put it simply, fake.
However, for this manga, reading how each character carried themselves, consistently, and realistically was what kept me interested and constantly admiring the authors craft. My favourite example of the authors storytelling is the balance between keeping the reader in the dark about some of the characters emotions. ...

Preliminary (123/? eps)
I just bingeread the first 123 chapters in 3 days, so it's easy to say that I recommend this manga to anyone that likes romance stories.

Ao no Hako's strengths :

- The story as a whole is rather interesting. While not being groundbreaking, there's always something happening, you'll always want to read the next chapter in order to learn the outcome of the current situation etc... The romance is quite wholesome, it's probably the best thing this manga has to offer, every character is lovable and you'll root for them. The comedy/gags work too, there's nothing cringe, and this manga also has the merit ...

Mixed Feelings
Preliminary (7/? eps)
There are a lot of problems with the writing. Little details here and there that bother me. Illogical remarks that suddenly take me out of the story, or situations that are a little too conventional, which make me sigh.
Moreover, the dialogues are sorely lacking in rhythm and spice. It's the last straw for a high-school love story, a bubbly, intrepid period.
Taiki's clearly not the most exciting boy on earth, and there's nothing wrong with being banal, but it's all too predictable. I've had enough of dull romances, I can't find myself in them.
The drawings, on the other hand, are quite brilliant, and ...
