Manga: Dead Dead Demons Dededede Destruction
i'm guessing asano read alien 9 and liked the premise of japan having to deal w some alien invasion. he must have also liked the idea of adding school girls to a sort of but not quite really invasion story. which is fine, really. but alien 9 does better and much faster. the art similarly cute, yet peculiar. but that comes with the territory

Manga: Narutaru: Mukuro Naru Hoshi Tama Taru Ko
Both start out very childish and cute, but are later incredbly dark, gross, disturbing, and odd. Also both involve strange creatures (and them fighting), school and home life, and both disect their characters. Shadow Star is easily the stronger of the two, but don't brush Alien Nine off, as it is also very good (and a little confusing).

Manga: Milk Closet
Both are about a team of small children that partners with "aliens" to fight other aliens. Both are darker than expected at first glance. In both the main female character is the most reluctant, but Milk Closet has a lot of twists later on.

Manga: Made in Abyss
These two manga are fantastic entries in the "human misery" genre, featuring children undergoing horrendous physically and mentally demanding tasks in a fantasy-type world. Both have cute art styles and characters despite this.

Manga: Shinseiki Evangelion
Teen characters forced to fight unknown creatures and experience a fair amount of psychological trauma that forces them to undergo changes. Later in the story, a lot of secrets are revealed about the alien creatures and how the game is rigged from the start and most of the events play accordingly to a conspiracy while the protagonists are oblivious to it all. Dark and cruel sci-fi stories with protagonists filled with despair and forced to fight. In NGE Shinji is forced to pilot a giant robot, while in Alien 9 Yuri is forced to have a symbiotic relationship with an alien in order to fight the  read more

Ordinary children are thrust into an overwhelming, dangerous situation with forces at play almost completely beyond their understanding, and they're expected to just kinda deal with it.

both seem to be very innocent looking during the start, but took a dark twist towards the middle of the story. had a very similar premise as well. sadism towards young schoolgirls

Manga: Saishuu Heiki Kanojo
Both series feature a few main characters in a sci-fi impacted world where things get progressively darker and darker and the characters have inner monologues about their suffering. Both about teenagers, high schoolers, and friendship (but no love in Alien 9).

Manga: Washio Sumi wa Yuusha de Aru
Similar premise: a group of three girls have been selected to defend humanity against monstrous enemies using the help of special powers (powers from the Shinju in WSwYdA, and symbiotic aliens in Alien Nine). Washio Sumi and her friends must defeat the Vertexes, and the girls from Alien Nine must defeat other aliens that pose threats. However, these powers come at a price, and the girls go through traumatic experiences that change them.

Manga: Propeller Heaven
Besides being by the same author, both have bizarre partial body transformations that linger between biological and mechanical. The main characters are young girls, one of whom is a somewhat whiney, and another who is "normal". Both manga involve a sinister and bizarre conspiracy that may not be apparent at first and never really becomes clear.
