Is this another versiomln of SAO except that it has nothing to do with swords?’ But 3 chapters into the manga and I was proven wrong. It does not revolve around a single game, it is a social trap. Real Account could be described as one of the most boring manga you could ever read. A manga that you will think is built and ONLY built by using poor USA styled characterisations, clichéd misunderstanding over technology, mixed with some kind of shit moral that could be resumed as "Phones are bad; The Internet is bad" throughout the whole story. Adding to that the understatement that this manga is about a survival game you could only access by using your phone, which was also a subject used in other mediocre manga like "Ousama Game", "Darwin's Game" or even "Mirai Nikki", you ... might presume that Real Account might get down the same path as them. There's a lot of reasons you could use for why you shouldn't read it, just because of how basic and unoriginal it feels only by looking at the cover.

"Real Account, in general, is not only the title of the manga. It is also described as the most powerful social media in the world. Not only Japan, the WHOLE world. The app which brings together the equivalent of Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Snapchat, Discord, TikTok, P*rnhub, I don't know... But ALL IN ONE!!! Doesn't it sounds cool? Well, guess what? After months, years of its existence, the app just wanted to magically teleport half of its users into... The app itself. The guy behind all this is Marble, the mascot that represents ReA and hides his true identity by wearing a mask. The reason he wanted to do that? To see people dying. How?:

If a player has 0 followers on ReA, he DIES! But if he dies in the survival game, all of his followers DIE TOO!"

That's the premise, for 24 volumes. If you don't like it, don't even bother to torture yourself. In my opinion, I thought that the last sentence to describe the whole thing was interesting. And reading it felt absurdly stressing. Like, who would you get balls to follow for assuring his life, while also risking yourself to die by them? Because of course that a lot of people will hit the unfollow button, they don't wanna die! Everyone who didn't even had followers right at the start died day one; all those with less than 1000 followers see their death coming and pray their life to have a least one guy to follow them; people who had over 1 000 000 followers didn't even care of seeing the subcount going down, even tho they were probably going to die. The beginning literally calls us, looks straight into our eyes and asks us if we DO care about the people we follow. Care to your own death. If they change through their carrier, would you still care about them?

The games they were getting into are all based of popular trends that a lot of us can relate. Knowing if you're connected to your audience, showing your photos that you took on your phone subconsciously, being a live stream with many viewers, heck they even have a game where you have to reveal someone's deleted post for making sure that he loses all his followers. The games, as intelligent as they can be, literally are some based representations of what does it might look like for someone to get exposed on Twitter or Youtube. It doesn't feel cringe, we actually feel that the author actually knows what he is talking about and is not only throwing bullshit at us expecting something to work by using the Internet as a main source only for cash. Even then, the characters feels realistic to their own place. They not only know what kind of danger can lead them to despair, but they also know what kind of thing they should say to preserve their popularity... so they could survive.

Yet, describing the characters can be the same as describing the story. You don't like them? Well, "too bad."

There's two main arcs, both sharing a different POV of two main characters going into totally different locations. Honestly, calling them "Arcs" can be a bit of a stretch, because the first arc is mainly an introduction to the second main characters whom's the one that holds the story for him alone. The "first arc" takes 2 volumes, only to tells us that the first MC, Ataru Kashiwagi, is the brother of the second MC who looks exactly like him. The "second arc" is the rest of the story, led by the brother, Yuma Mukai. So, "it gets better after 2 volume." As Ataru can be described as the one who tries it best to be careful over his actions, Mukai is the insane one. The badass. The one who doesn't give a fuck if he dies, but also a great leader making sure that everyone lives above him. Yeah... A shounen protagonist. He even develops a power over his madness. Not only that, some others can be as likeable and INTELLIGENT as both MCs are. There's Ayame, which is the stereotypical girl that always care about Mukai; Mizuki, the masochist one who eats raw meat and plays with knives; Aiji, the cute gay one that also appears to be someone who doesn't care to die...

As I write this review I already know this sounds like crap. Anything that is mentionned doesn't feels believable and the whole thing about "The Internet" being treated well in a media is such a taboo thing that doesn't feel right. It's not believable to see that a manga like this is good. And I understand it. This manga IS BAD, hypothetically speaking. Does it mean that it wasn't a good read? No! Shout in any direction you want for not thinking that I'm not having some "reviewer perspective", I thought that Real Accound still was a pretty fun manga to read. The games were unique, Mukai was cool as shit compared to other survival games' MCs that I saw, and the artstyle, while being pretty okay, worked for this manga. Uncovering the mistery of how everyone is going to survive was a crazy ride to get. I surely won't call this a masterpiece, it will still be a manga that I'll miss reading it.

Real Account is not what you'd expect on the bad side or the good side, but it's mainly enjoyable.

I want to preface this by stating that Real Account influenced my decision to make a MAL account due to my utter disappointment and need to rant/review it somewhere.

Real Account has people competing for their lives in a social media death game which follows 2 simple but clever rules:
-Followers of a player who dies will also die
-Once a player hits 0 followers they will die

The game is also broadcast to the public allowing players to gain/lose followers throughout the game (except in special cases/rounds). Right off the bat Real Account delves into dark and deep topics - do you trust someone enough to stake your ... life on theirs? how many of your followers really care about you? etc.

This is the very core of Real Account (at least for the first 30ish chapters of it) that makes Real account so interesting. The games usually involve the public, who get to keep their anonymity, as they judge the players by comparing their social media accounts to their real personalities. One of the key themes that works great with this is the players need to balance their dark secrets and controversies (with the controversial stuff garnering more attention and therefore better survival possibility) with keeping their few remaining followers. The games in Real Account are the driving force of creativity and are solved in clever but believable ways.

Now with all that said, it may be surprising to see my scoring. However about 30ish chapters in, the manga changes tone considerably with it's first big twist. The twist is separated into two parts, a character's past is revealed and a character suddenly changes drastically. I will say that the reveal of the character's past and how it effects the game (although it's kinda glossed over in a few panels) is awesome. Unfortunately the character that changes is not only come out of left field but cause the character to do one of the biggest anime-ass-pulls* of the series.

*Anime-ass-pull: when something so incredibly stupid happens, usually in anime/manga, that is overly complicated, ridiculous, or otherwise doesn't fit the tone of the story such that it completely breaks suspension of disbelief, even in the most silly series. This might be something major or minor but is used to advance the plot in a lazy way. Note there is probably a better word for this, but I had fun writing this description.

The tone of the series drastically shifts. Although it still contains its original themes, they are no longer as consistent and few and far between, instead favoring action and ecchi over psychological thriller. The side story plots become a mess of ideas that seemingly pop in and out for convenience sake, certain character motivations aren't believable, and plot holes are frequent towards the later half of the first arc.

There is one scene I feel the need to describe (with as little spoilers as possible) because it represents everything that is wrong with the story after the first twist: At one point two female characters need to cross an extremely shallow pool of water that blocks their way to the exit. The problem is the pool of water has a electricity flowing through it. However this electricity is coming from a cellphone - one that is already established to be in a water proof case. That aside, the cellphone somehow has enough charge to kill these characters, so in order to cross they decide to strip themselves of their swimsuits - in view of the public - in order to use the swimsuits as stepping stones to cross the pool. The worst part of this is that Real Account had used the topic of nudity and other lewdness spreading to the public (as one of those controversial topics that the public loves) multiple times, in much better ways.

Overall, Real Account was greatly enjoyable for the a decent amount of time, but it turned into a case of didn't know when to rest. What could have been a great story is overshadowed by how terrible the second half of the first major arc is. The main story has moments of brilliance but is weighed down by plot holes, pacing problems, and genre identity issues. I really wanted to like this manga but I feel 100x more disappointed in Real Account then I ever did for Death Note's second half. And perhaps the worst part of Real Account is that it's still going (at least past what I have read and what I've found translated). My personal wish is that this is adapted to a 1 or 2 season anime that rewrites the end because the enjoyment I got out of the beginning chapters raised my review score, but not by much: 4/10

This manga starts out guns-blazing amazing. I'm really into psychological thrillers where there's a twist at every corner, and death games like Liar Game, Tower of God, and Darwin's Game really appeal to me. This one turned out to be a horrible disappointment.

This manga feels like a lobotomised version of Mirai Nikki, which is bad enough already. Most of the reviews, so far, for this manga have been extremely positive, this review serves to open the discussion of this manga.

The premise is actually quite good, a death game with a twist that what's keeping you alive are the followers on your social media account who die if you die. Only certain people are forced to play the death game, but people in the real world can still follow the players' social media accounts. The games the players are forced to play vary, with death being the seemingly ... only punishment for failing. The games are very poorly done and never provoke any tension, most of the games involve people being so idiotic and retaining their pride even if it causes their death.

(Spoiler)The story is broken up into two parts, they follow twin brothers, the main character changes between parts to the other twin. One of these stories is 10 chapters long, the other is incomplete at 60 chapters. I believe they didn't plan to carry the manga on for so long and the second part is just being expanded in order to obtain more revenue.

You will likely feel confused whilst reading Real Account, not because the story is hard to grasp, but because so much information is withheld from the reader. This technique is not uncommon and can be used to good effect, however here it is used so much that illogical twists seemingly come from nowhere, the reader doesn't have the required information about the characters or the story to deduct the upcoming twists themselves.

The first major twist of the story is utterly asinine and I feel encapsulates the whole manga. The main character is not who he says he is, he is in fact the twin brother of the person who he pretended to be, his brother died(not really). My problem is that identical twins don't have identical DNA as it mutates based on lifestyle and we see that the other brother was more outgoing and athletic, whilst the main character was a lot less active. This would likely change their skin colour slightly, one is more exposed to sunlight, their builds are going to be different one is going to have more of an athletic build with more muscle. The manga showed the brothers switching places often, leading each other's lives and actually had the main character scrutinising over the fact people realise he is not acting like usual, however no one puts two and two together, because of plot convenience and it is never mentioned again, he went back to his old lifestyle with a new name. I believe this is so flawed because no one even his sister who is extremely close to him could distinguish him.

After backstory is given to key characters their previous actions and reactions seem completely out of character, it also renders any promise of the characters developing impossible, as we weren't seeing the actual character the whole time. When giving backstory to the characters nothing is hinted at and it isn't given to the reader at a smooth pace, the manga has an expository dump and gives the reader a lot of information in a short space of time, which is jarring.

The manga has bog-standard, at best, art and you will not see any screenshot worthy pages.

I believe Real Account to be a chore to read, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, even if you're a massive fan of the death game genre.

I really wanted to love this manga, which is why I stuck around for so long. It started off solid enough, with an interesting (if cliched) set up. The best thing this manga has going for it is it's message. Because, contrary to what you may initially believe, or what you may see people assume after having read a chapter or so, the manga does not take an entirely one-sided stance on whether "online bonds" are real bonds or not. It dissects what it truly means to have an honest, personal relationship, both with people you know in the real world, and also those you ... have met online. It wants you to look at how you treat other people, and what you display to those you consider a "friend". Can, in actuality, you find bonds that are stronger then those towards people close at hand, over the internet? Is it possible for online friends to be bound with you by fate, wheres people in the "real world" simply don't care if you live or die? What would you do if you couldn't unfollow that one person on your social media, because if you did, you would die alongside them, making the two of you bond via your online relationship?

It is interesting to imagine yourself in the situation, and to wonder, "what would happen to me? Do these people I know online actually, truly, matter to me as people? Do I matter to them as a person? What'd happen if my life literally depended on theirs, and theirs on mine?". But unfortunately no amount of messages and an interesting set up can save Real Account from the utter mess that it turned into. Bare in mind there's there's some very vague mentions of the direction the narrative heads in here, but it's important to say this to give the idea of why I'm rating this pile of crap so low. After a while the manga begins to shift gears, and not at all in a good way. What was at first an interesting, if bizarre, psychological horror, changed into a ridiculous, over the top, free for all story line, with the death game suddenly spilling out into the real world around Japan, and the players being hunted down by civilians all desperate to make a quick buck by killing whoever they can.

The illogical holes, and utter chaos just completely fall in on themselves. There's no rhyme or reason to what's going on with the world around the characters, which despite having a death game going on with innocent people getting killed by mobs on the street, seems to be operating like nothing is going on. The police and the Japanese Self Defense Force are also nowhere to be seen, and don't seem to care about trying to help in any way. this is probably intentional as there's hints that there's some big conspiracy behind everything but so far there's been nothing explaining why there's no authority figures trying to sort out what's going on. It didn't seem out of place when everyone was in the "Real Account Dimension", since there's not a whole lot that could be done at that time, but after things spilled out into the real world, it becomes a bit glaring that they're not even bringing up that there doesn't seem to be any type of authority trying to help the players or stop the death game from continuing.

And this is just one of many issues. I won't go into all of them, but needless to say there's just way too many stupid elements, or elements which they're leaving hanging, and the manga isn't satisfying the craving for answers to them. That's if they even have the answers to them in the first place. It's gotten to a point where I just can't be bothered to continue on reading in the vein hope that they actually explain everything. What had previously invested me into the manga is no longer there, and the claustrophobic feeling that the death game previously had is no longer there.

A harem element has also been forced in for next to no reason. I didn't read Real Account to see a guy gain a harem, yet the manga seems insistent that this is what the readers want to see, constantly forcing the angle. Romance is fine, but even the early chapters felt like it was being far too forceful with this, and it just got worse after the 30 chapter mark. There's also forced yuri. Although I may be a fan of yuri, I didn't sign up to Real Account to see a girl perversely check out another girl's body, with the narrative excuse being that she's looking for a mark-of-death. Narrative elements in the last 10 or so chapters I read kept forcing fan service into every corner, with narrative excuses for why it's there. Why are they in swim suits in a spa, surrounded by women in bikinis? To blend in of course! Why did they strip naked? To use their clothes as stepping stones! (which doesn't make any sense but I won't get into that) How can we have one of the female cast wear skimpy clothes while erotically peeing to satisfy all the urolagnia readers? It's a prank by a kid! Yeah, it just got way too much, and the last straw for me was when chapter 54 (44, excluding the ones before the number reset) had an part where a young girl was being spanked as punishment for trying to murder the three mains. Not only is the entire idea surrounding it stupid in the first place (what little kids would suddenly become murderers over the prospect of the equivalent of just 8800 dollars, and why is it just brushed off with the manga basically going "look at the naughty kids about to MURDER three innocent strangers for money, they deserve a spanking"), but it's also disturbingly sexualised. Then halfway through the next chapter when it become clear that it was focusing on trying to force more of it's harem bull down our throats (the entire notion of which in the chapter came out of left field,), I just completely had enough and stopped reading. I could honestly forgive the "romance" element being so forced in if it had at least been handled well, but it isn't at all. It does what all the bad manga and animes (and fiction in general) that try and have this "group of people who all love the same person" thing do. It tries to have it's cake and eat it, trying to ship tease for every possible pairing while still attempting to have genuine heart and love at the core of the romance, the two of which don't gel together at all. Pick something and stick with it, I can't take it seriously when you're expecting me to care enough for someone's feelings towards a person, when it's clear the writers themselves can't give less of a crap.

And this is a running theme. The writers just seem to be doing whatever the hell they want to now, and this comes across glaringly in the complete mess that the story's become. There's zero sense of a solid direction in anything, including narrative elements, character relations, them knowing what they even want the character relations and narrative threads to be...Nothing gels at all any more. It's a complete shame, because I was really enjoying the manga to a point. It wasn't anything special, but it was a solid idea, with a serious (if bizarre and fantastical) horror theme, which made me genuinely horrified at times. But after the direction it spiraled into, I can't at all find myself to like reading it any more, let alone take it the least bit seriously as a "psychological horror".

Well usually I didn't giving a review to a series before but because of some reason for the currently chapters (Chapter 102), I will giving my review about this manga.

Story: 4/10
For the Chapter 1 through 62 (Ataru Arc and Yuuma Arc), I will giving a 10/10 because the story was really nice, good and interesting because of those setting: the main characters and the others are getting caught in a Social networking site and they have be forced to play those game or will getting killed, those game are really nice because it need using a brain to thinking how to play to survive in ... this networki and a good friendship to work together for win the games and survived from being killed. But for the Chapter 63 onward (Final Arc), I will only rating a 2/10 because the story and setting are so boring and awful (Sometimes it even make no sense and having a plot hole), most of the time was just giving a fan service more than a story itself, sometime the game was even ins from other Anime series and game it make even more boring. So the full story rate will be 4/10.

Art: 8/10
I don't need to explain since most of the reviews in this manga has explain it so I have no word giving about the art.

Character: 3/10
Similar to my review about the story I will giving 8/10 for the first two arc, the characters are really nice and smart in order to survive the game and the most important is have a nice development, but for the Final Arc I will giving 2/10 only like how I review about the final arc in story review, most of the new characters are not interesting, annoying and the new characters are even nearly get NO development. (The only one who has actually get development the most in final arc was Yuuma himself and sometime Ayame, the other characters are only appear briefly in 95% of the story plot at the time in final arc.) The full rate is 3/10

Same with my other review, but it still enjoyable sometime in final arc even through sometime is not enjoyable because of the awful story.

Overall: 6/10
So I will giving a 6/10 cause I really like this manga once before the final arc was started, as far I'm still reading the manga currently but I think maybe I will stop reading this manga later if the story become worst and even worst. I recommend you guys don't read the chapter 63 onward or don't use your brain to reading the final arc's story to avoid those plot hole and bad storytelling. Of course this is just my opinion so maybe it wasn't good reviews to most of you guys. And maybe I will change my review once this manga is ended so it have to wait my full review about this manga.

Was this a psychological horror manga or straight up ecchi? Every chapter the author finds some way (no matter how illogical or literally impossible) to put the women into lewd positions... We literally get a panty shot of a hanged CORPSE. As soon as a new female character is introduced we have to see them nude. It's ridiculous and somewhat insulting. It started of all well and good, I'm pretty good at filtering out fanservice but it felt like the plot become secondary to the fanservice as time went on. For example the guys got to have a road chase and also a knife fight.Meanwhile ...

Real Account was a manga I've stumbled upon, I'm really into these survival game type manga/anime and I saw Real Account being tagged as a Survival Game somewhere, and so I gave it a read.
And for a while I was really hooked on it, I checked for updates regularly on it while it was being released, was hoping to buy it officially in English once it was released, and ...

I saw the negative reviews, but thought "Maybe people are wrong". I loved the concept, and a gambling/gaming manga always excites me. The first five chapters are excellent, in fact, the first 30 chapters or so are really solid and made me think I must have a different opinion than most people.

But the fifth game in the manga is where Real Account changes, by taking the main character the manga has stuck upon and changing him, making him go from that usual likable protagonist to... honestly a psychopath. The good news is the world they set ... up, is interesting and vibrant and the social commentary is good. The bad news is almost all of that is frozen over the next 20-30 chapters.

Up to chapter 30, Real Account seemed to want to talk about how people composed themselves online, the problem is the manga seems to put a pin in that and start what feels like an insane heel turn to become almost random at times. The main character changes, and how he turns is a decent-sized spoiler, but he goes from a typical main character to a completely unlikable person in a few chapters. This isn't a "I did something extreme" the manga just decided the character they've developed for 30 chapters is now different, and you have to deal with it or move on... Well spoiler for my review, I'm moving on.

Normally, this wouldn’t be a problem, I read all of Gantz but never really connected with the main character. The problem is the heel turn doesn’t make a ton of sense, and worse, the manga follows the main character. Instead of an interesting look at social media with “games” as commentary on the internet culture, instead the games appear to start taking longer, to the point where I think the current “game” has taken ten to twenty chapters and isn’t over. Instead of a focused narrative on the situation, every character seems to have split up and almost no character seems to be rational. It feels like the entire manga has become “Lolrandom”.

But the bigger problem is over the last ten chapters or so, I noticed I don’t care about the characters anymore. The main character I was invested in is just no longer likable. The side characters are barely in it, and even when they are their relationship with the main character doesn’t make a ton of sense. The main character himself’s actions don’t make a ton of sense.

I’ve heard the manga will change around chapter 63.

But also the manga has gone from a cyber world with real penalties, to just focusing on the real world and the thing is… I just don’t care anymore.

I don’t care enough that I looked up spoilers, and I don’t care enough to read them other than confirming I know at least the next big twist.

But to look up spoilers I had to admit I was going to get spoilers, and I decided I was fine about that after a simple test.

The question: “What would the series have to do to get me interested in reading it again?”

The answer: “Nothing. I no longer care about the world, the characters, the games take too long, the games are based on the characters, and the action is silly…” The original manga of the first thirty chapters is gone, and it’s time for me to move on.

I’m just going to read something else. You should too… what’s funny is I read a lot of reviews on here that said this manga turns around the same point I think it does too. I thought “Ahhh manga fans are just crybabies who can’t deal with complex plots” “It certainly can’t be bad” and “People who read too many of this genre are upset”.

Nope, it’s that bad... I’m done wasting my time on it, you shouldn’t start.

If you want something better to spend your time on, I’d suggest Danganronpa (the game or the manga, not both). Gamble Fish. The first 50 chapters of Yugioh, and of course the king mother of this “genre”... Battle Royale. I’ll keep adding to that list, but Real Account is out of the running.

Yep, it's as bad as other reviewers have pointed out. I applaud anyone who actually made it to the end of this dumpster fire.

If you are expecting any type of drama or suspense then don't waste your time on this. They took an interesting science fiction survival story and turned it into 24 volumes of the most repetitive, incoherent mess possible. Every chapter is sillier and crazier than the one before it until it's all just noise. It's a manga about how social media affects your daily life, and turns it into a death game but becomes so mind-numbingly stupid, it's entertaining.
