Great mangas of Takehiko Inoue. Both are about basketball, with a familiar mood. Slam Dunk have more comedy and REAL have more drama. Both are awesome.
If you don't like basketball or do not enjoy sports manga, read Slam Dunk first. I'm sure you'll love it and you'll want to play basketball.

Haikyuu!! addpermalink

Both protagonists are a complete beginner in the sport. Sakuragi in Basketball and Hinata in Volleyball. They start out as a laughing stock and a complete failure. But they both possess a special talent that make them shine and leave the crowd in disbelief and total awe.

High Kyuu has the traits necessary to become a masterpiece much like Slam Dunk. If you loved Slam Dunk, you'll surely enjoy High Kyuu!

Both are sports series that track the passion-fueled progress of an up-and-coming team with delinquent tendencies, with more than their fair share of humour and awesomeness. In a vaguer kind of way, they both have the same reader-involving '90s Shonen Jump vibe that makes a series unforgettable.

Eyeshield 21 addpermalink

Both Eyeshield 21 and Slam Dunk have a similar story: Player who originally wants nothing to do with the sport ends up playing the sport, and learning to love the sport. 

Now, Hanamichi Sakuragi and Kobayakawa Sena have completely different reasons for joing their sports, but they do and they get very, very good at their sports. Each one has a rival that inspires them to work harder (Rukawa and Shin), and each one has a reason to win. 

Both stories are very funny at times, and at other times, very dramatic. Both stories are similar in the fact that they both draw you in, allows you to relate to the characters, and you even find yourself rooting for the teams (Shohoku and Deimon) to win. 

In my opinion, if you liked Slam Dunk, you'll like Eyeshield 21, and vice versa. read more

Hanamichi and Harumichi are almost the same guy, they have the same personality and respond in similar ways, even though Crows is a fighting manga and Slam Dunk a sports manga.

Both main characters are extremely similar, they both start as delinquents who enter the sport as novices. Also they both have a genius teammate that they extremely hate. Both manga don't require any knowledge about the sport featured and both share similar feelings of comedy and action.

Apart from GTO being my most favourite of all time, I'm really recommending this because of their similar personality, they're both dumb as fuck, gets rejected as fuck but strong as fuck and real as fuck. The only thing different is plot slam dunk about basketball to impress a girl while gto is a gangster becoming a  teacher but not teaching normally the premise revolves around him teaching real life lessons but through the most outrageous way possible. DON'T LET THE IDEA OF A TEACHER PUT YOU OFF THE MANGA i done this so I didn't read for about two years until read it on a whim, boom ended being my most favourite manga of all time. so I genuinely recommend it. read more

You might not see the similarities in the beginning, and even though there are definitely more differences than similarities, I had to recommend this because of my love of both manga. First, I hardly ever read shounen manga, so these manga either have an amazing plot, or just really funny. Both manga have both these traits. Both the main protagonist life seems to be going no where. Until they both meet a girl that essentially motivates them to do what they're good at. Sun Ken? Fighting. Slam Dunk? Basketball. Friendship, courage, strength, love, and motivation are big parts of both the stories. And of course, the AMAZING plot and comedy. Don't get me wrong. Buzzer Beater addpermalink

Although the plot is entirely different, both mangas are rather humoristic stories about basketball, with a little bit of drama in them. They're made by one author and the main characters are both cocky and talented teenagers. If you really liked Slam Dunk, then Buzzer Beater is something you should certainly read.

Both main character are very similar. One who like one of these two manga should like the other one as I feel they are very similar in term of sports development : Both main character are wild and are learning the game. One difference to note is the different sport the manga focus on. Still worth a try.

I know you're thinking: "How is a sports manga similar at all to a music manga?" Well, while the subject matter differs entirely, the themes and characters are all too similar (in a good way). Both of these follow a young man with little direction in their lives; that is, until Sakuragi finds basketball and Koyuki finds music.

Other similarities: artwork starts off meh, gets better as it goes on (always fun seeing that transition); the authors' (Inoue Takehiko [Slam Dunk], Harold Sakuishi [Beck]) clearly depict their passion not only for storytelling, but for the hobby which is shown; and, finally, both were adapted into well-received anime. read more

First things first, one is a basketball sport and the other is a cycling sport. What makes them sort of similar is the elements of delinquency. Both series focuses on the delinquent part of the story outside of their sport. The comedy on both is also spectacular and as well as the suspense and drama that both series provides. If you enjoy Slam Dunk or Wind Breaker, give each a try and you will know some sorts of similarities between two very good series.

Though Slam Dunk is a sports manga (Basketball) and Clover is a fighting one; they both have a very similar kind of vibe.
They both take place in high school, have a very strong and funny MCs, similar comedy and allot of tough unique male characters.
I get the feeling that if Sakuragi went back into his delinquent days he'd be exactly like Hayato.

I see a lot of similarities in the main characters and their resolve to fight and unwillingness to give up under pressure.

The shows share a similar structure with the dark tournament being showed very similarly to the matches in Slam Dunk, with amazing 90’s art.

Both have similar main characters--Harima and Hanamichi are both delinquents who will go the extra mile for the girl they love, and their comedic appeal is similar. Basketball is also a common theme in both, but Slam Dunk obviously showcases the sport more than School Rumble does.

Both Sakuragi Hanamachi and Hibino Hareluya are boastful, powerful and really idiotic people. They also are feared by people, but didn't care ... and they would do anything to protect their comrades, and Hareluya's ambition is to conquer the world while Hanamichi's is to conquer bball.

Ahiru no Sora addpermalink

Obviously both about basketball however that isn't really what makes them similar. Perhaps it is better to say they are the inverse of one another, in Ahiru no Sora the MC is a small, happy-go-lucky high schooler who sets out to make an official basketball club which until this point has been the den for a group of delinquents. Instead of Slam Dunk where a tall and highly athletic delinquent who has never played before joins a somewhat distinguished basketball team. The key difference would be that Ahiru no Sora has slightly more focus on Slice of Life elements, however it clearly is influenced by Slam Dunk (has a few references) and the games are very similar in style. read more

The main characters, although of the opposite traits [Take Isamu is athletic and good at studies while Sakuragi Hanamichi is a hopeless romantic gangster and doesn't excel in studies], started to play the sports initially to impress the girl they like who also happen to love and play the sports. However, they both develop the love for the sports and the eagerness to improve.

Ice revolution is pretty much Slam Dunk with reverse genders.

Both Sakuragi and Misaki (protagonists) are initially violent, idiotic characters but have exceptional talent with their respective sport. Both characters have 'rivals' with indifferent attitudes to the protagonists (Rukawa and Saaya), yet would at times would act as their mentor. The reason the protagonists took up basketball/ice skating was to get closer to their love interests (Haruko and Kaoru) which coincidently, are more interested in their rivals than the protagonists. Eventually, both protagonists grow to love the sport despite initial intentions.

Hantsu x Trash is an ecchi version of Slam Dunk. Both main characters start of confessing and being rejected. Both they're lives in the beginning are somewhat boring. Both join a sport, basketball and water polo, mainly to get involved with a girl who is with the team. They both begin to enjoy the sport and have an amazing jumping ability. They're main goal is to get so good that it'll impress the girl in their hearts. Overall both mangas will teach you about the sport. Major difference are the teams motivations and goals for being in the team.

Both are basketball series about a guy with no interest in basketball who joins the team after a cute girl asks him if he plays and ends up experiencing delusions of grandeur and getting a bit of a big head as he learns the basics.

The similarities are apparent when you look at the members and how they are introduced into the story. Not only that but their personalities and roles in the team. Both clubs start off weak but after some new members join, gain the attention from top schools.

I know it may seem like two completely different manga one is sport other is martial arts.But after reading them ull know they have a lot in common.
Both
- have a protagonist who starts out as idiot rookie but actually are genius at what they do.
-Protagonist learn new skills at unbelievable speed.
-protagonist are first reluctant to play basketball/learn martial art but do so for a girl.
And finally both are extremely good...
