Harem is a typical genre being overused in Japan since the start. To ether cater to the male, and sometimes female demographic. All of the shows/manga that has been produced as a harem have always been a huge hit, or a massive failing miss. Monster Musume is somewhere in between, but it tilts towards the good side more. Here's why.

This series is straight up bizarre. There is a bevy of sexy women who are half animals. And their cup sizes range from A, all the way to P, and beyond (Whoa, lots of bazonkers!). So any ecchi fan will be satisfied while ... reading this manga. A really strange thing about this manga series is that it actually can teach about how animals use their bodies. Like at some point a factoid gets weirdly shot out like "Male seahorses are usually the ones to give birth", etc. If this ever gets to be a dubbed anime, then National Geographic should consider showing it on their cable channel for more *research*.

Thorns are spread out on the road for this manga series (Literally, and figuratively). One thorn that really takes a chunk out of it is that sometimes the author seems to be forgetting what kind of dialogue should Cerea have. Sometimes she sounds like a normal woman, then other times she sounds like a complete Norse mythology Goddess. Shouting "HALT!", "THY!", and for comedy reasons "Zounds!". "Zounds!" sort of makes her look really cute. Speaking of "Zounds". There are also puns, A LOT OF puns (Dirty jokes too). That isn't much of a hassle. But it can get really ridiculous sometimes. One of the books even has "Fifty shades of neigh" written in the back. Another thorn to be found is that it sometimes feels repetitive. How? Well there's always breast feeding, accidental nip slips, funny dates, and the occasional softcore hentai.

However eventually that repetition gets more interesting because the author starts adding some new things to the mix. Like a monster brawl, and a newer batch of monster girls. There is also some action like a hostage situation being disarmed by a SWAT team of monster girls. The characters are super cute, and the monster girls each have their own really unique design. The anatomy is superb on each of them. It all works, and there is variety. The only thing that is bothersome is that the main character (Kurusu Kimihito) barely has any facial expressions at all. All he does is look shocked/scared, and that's it. Oh, and the boobs look really wonderful too (Yes, can't forget about that detail... that's really important). The coloring is neatly done. And the backgrounds are structurally sound (It's not important as the big luscious milky honkers, or the round plump booties, but still). This series has almost everything. Sometimes it does have a main story, but usually that story gets canned to the curb.

On A Personal Note: I really enjoyed reading this series, and I will continue to do so. This is one of those rare ecchi treats that actually have more things to show other than cleavage. I did like the ecchi that is has though, and I was pretty depressed when it started to get toned down (Puts away the lotions, and tissues)......but then the ecchi came back again, and I was celebrating (Brings back lotions, and tissues)! Monster Musume also has these really cool bios of all of the girls in the end of each book. That is one of the reasons why I am not going to return these books to the store, I'll keep them in my library for many years to come. At first I was daunted when I started reading this. I mean I saw a centaur girl? And all I thought was "Okay. She looks good. Her boobs are gorgeous..... and huge.......how are the mechanics going to work on banging her though?". But.......then I resolved that issue......eventually, after a few rounds of fa- actually something tells me that this series could turn people into furries. I am not one, of course..........until I see Cheetara from the ThunderCats, the 2011 version that is. I am really glad that there is more comedy ecchi, than serious ecchi out there these days. Because ecchi can't be a serious genre no matter what. I mean when boobs flying for no reason are the main point, then why would I be interested in the lackluster writing, and dialogue? Monster Musume does not have terrible writing, just dumb jokes (Which is a really good thing). And the dialogue is not bad at all. It's solid. Thank goodness.

If you're looking for something different in terms of ecchi. Give this a go. It's quite the ride (Cerea is too).

Now, those reading my review would probably think that it's because of the "Ecchi" and "Harem" elements highly present in it but putting these aside Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou is really good manga if not one of the best ever.

Monster Girls is a giant cocktease, in almost all senses but literal.

Oh, there's plenty of tits and panty shots. I honestly can't tell if it's supposed to be ecchi or hentai, and frankly I don't really care to figure out. The art definitely compliments this, tits, panties, and asses are all drawn expertly and in glorious detail. You'd expert nothing less from a kinda-pornographic kinda-not manga, and as time goes on they get a cast of monsters so big one of them is sure to fill under one of your sick fetishes. Unless you're into dudes and only dudes. In which case run, run as ... far as you can from this thing.

My biggest problem with Monster Girl is that it could be so much more. It's obvious that the author put a lot of thought into this world, and if you can get past the porn it's actually pretty interesting. There are laws about "extraspecies" that actually make sense, and the monster girls' monster-ness are by no means aesthetic. The harpy doesn't have periods, she lays eggs, the centaur can't eat meat, the lamia sheds her skin, so on and so forth. The author did his or her research, and I'm honestly pretty impressed.

The characters, too, have potential. They're all interesting and pretty fun, and we get hints of their backstories, but we never get much time to really learn about everyone. Rather, We just pile on more and more monster girls. Although to be fair we seem to have slowed down by the Dulahan, and most new monsters come and go, so maybe we'll start to explore more about these characters soon.

The plot is the worst cocktease of them all. So many times we're presented with the possibility of something changing, of someone dying or MC finally deciding on a girl (it's the lamia you idiot, go with the lamia) to marry, but they never go anywhere. The only thing that ever changes is that we get MORE MONSTER GIRLS. And it's not like they never address the issue, no. Not once but twice does Ms. Plot Catalyst tell our MC that HE HAS TO CHOOSE A GIRL TO MARRY NOW. But no, the story must go on, and he has to keep his harem. No one can leave the harem and it never ends. Come to think of it, it sounds like some kind of terrible depressing purgatory. You must pine over this man and get an ever-increasing amount of love rivals for all eternity! NOOOOO!

In conclusion, Monster Girl is a story with quite a lot of potential that will go forever unrealized, and it's a tragedy. Maybe if the great gods of anime past decide to pull a twist and make an interesting and intelligent story rather than sell more half-clothed figurines and dakimakura the anime will split off from the manga and just develop maybe the three first girls, but that's about as likely as Naruto ending.

I'll start off by saying that I'm not a huge manga person. I'm more of an anime person and just watch the anime then read the manga. However; since this is one of those that don't have an anime and from what I've read thus far. Not only is this an acception to that, but I can also safely say that I'm enjoying this manga thus far.

I've read all 16 chapters of the story thus far and so far have enjoyed the story. So far, the characters that we have are Kurusu; the only human male that this story resembles around and the main ... protagonist of course. Then we've got Miia who's a Lamia, (half snake, half women). Papi, who's a Harpy; by the way, am I the only one who notices that, that rhymes? Centorea, who's obviously a centaur since it's in her name. Suu, who's a blue slime monster. Lorelei, who's a mermaid, and the new one; Arachnera; who's obviously an arachnid.

Right now; I'm enjoying the story thus far and I will admit. While the story doesn't really have a plot to it since we just keep getting more and more monster girls for this guy and it just keeps building up to more suspense but nothing really comes from it except pain. It just doesn't seems to really be leading anywhere and lord knows of how long it'll last, how many more characters we keep getting, and when it'll eventually end and how it will end. Now; I will say this. Even though it doesn't have a plot to it and it's not really leading anywhere. The story that's been telling us thus far is freaking hillarious, especially; in like the first 10 chapters. When I first started reading this and when we got to the point where Centorea had been introduced. Things not only got crazy but freaking hillarious. I was laughing my ass off so much that I almost died from laughing. It may not have a plot, but really makes up for it with it's hillarious scenes.

The art work is just great. It is a little sad though that only certain parts of it like the introduction of a new volume or at the beginning is in color and the rest is in black and white. Cause if it was all in color, it would probably look even more grander. However; while it is mostly all in black and white, the drawing of the characters, the scenery and everything else really makes up for that fact because the drawing is just great.

The characters are pretty good and are one of the things that makes this manga real freaking hillarious. I mean; you actually do feel sorry for this kid; Kurusu, because he's getting pulled into all these directions. He's getting pumbled to death by these girls and they are actually competeting for him, and that my friends does lead to great comedy and that's what this manga really is, it's mainly comedy while it does have some great romantic scenes in it as well. As of right now; my most favorite character is Arachnera. Yeah, thought I was gonna choose Miia didn't ya? That doesn't mean though that I don't like Miia because I really do as well as the others, especially; Centorea. I do like Miia a lot, especially; in the first several chapters. She's sweet, she's loyal, she's hot as hell, and really knows how to show her vengeful side when she has to. However; the reason why I like Arachnera more is because you do actually get a little bit of a background story with her when she comes in. I also love of how sneaky she is and the fact that she's a spider, really just makes her even more sneaky and would come out of the last place you'd expect to find her. Granted, I'm not a huge fan of spiders, not saying that I'm scared of them or something because I'm not, but there's just something that I really like about her.

As I've said before, while the story is a little lacking and there isn't a plot to the story, it's the characters and the comedy of this manga that keeps it going because it is hillarious and I'm just loving it. It's a lot of fun and you'll just enjoy reading it. It's not really a porno manga since there isn't actually any sex going on but does have some exposure and even that is what makes it hillarious in some points but depends on where it goes. If you wanna know what I'm talking about. Read it until you get to chapter 6 and read that, because that's where it really gets hillarious. This is one of the few that I'm gonna keep reading and am really looking forward to when the next chapter comes out.

Even the Chapters I had already watched over in the anime gave the same taste of Enjoyment as they gave off in the anime. I'd like to start out saying "YES, THIS IS A HAREM MANGA." That being said, the harem motif isn' t really the defining factor of this story, but more like an instigator for action (without it, I'd see no reason for all these monster girls to conglomerate together)

I have read all available manga at the point of writing this (vol 14). Its a high ecchi harem story with monster girls. First without spoilers it has a semi weak story as its mostly set up these characters meeting and interacting with one another, which is the main enjoyment is the humor. It doesn't try to be much more then a funny manga with crazy character designs but at times does bring up some interesting stuff like immigration, mortality, and other subjects with these characters with humor (see spoilers for examples).

CONS
The characters personalities are simple at first in it but can be seen ... the writer probably took constructive criticism on that matter and tried to fix it with a decent amount of success once you get past where the anime and OVA's end as they get more aspects start to shine through (the anime covers up to vol 6 only). The story is simply to prove a human can have a functional romantic relationship (and later marriage) by using the main character as "test study" but i found that the simple fact all of these characters living together without the characters murdering each other or fighting tooth, nail, hoof, and claw when living with a male who is a common romantic interest proof enough that a full integration of all the races can be done, which should be a more important matter. Also i got really annoyed with the laws saying humans cant ever harm a non human or vice versa regardless of self defense or otherwise which makes no sense at all. Heck it even got in the way of cops dealing with a issue with Orcs in a scene as they "were not allowed to use force" when the orcs have hostages and firearms so makes no sense.

PROS
This series is very fun to read just on seeing the next interesting character or race to come up and the most fun part for me is the tons of nods and references to everything from American horror films like Final Destination to video games to Godzilla and kaiju battles to George A Romero fans and the feels towards running style zombies as one character said "fast zombies are okay, but give me a proper shambling horde any day!"." Those of course are the pros beyond the fun art and funny ecchi scenes. The main can be a pro or con depending on why you look at this as hes simple but clearly a honest and likable guy along with him clearly liking all of them (hes in essence a honest and kind guy while having no problem looking at the girls "assets" sometimes) so works well as a character any male reader can imagine putting themselves in his position in.

SPECIFIC SCENES I WISH TO MENTION (Partial spoilers ahead)
There's a few scenes that it does something smart in that i wish to bring up to show this is not just silly ecchi fan service and humor even though a lot of it kinda is. The most common of them being about immigration of these races and even of a few of them should be considered even sentient for the races like slimes as they technically don't have a brain and one of the main cast is one. Also a very specific scene with a character named Lala who she always talks like shes the grim reaper herself as shes a Dullahan (in essence a headless horseman style being) and was talking as such in a hospital around a group of kids staying there which lead to a very somber moment for her as a character as one of them was dying. This scene stands out as the best scene in the entire manga hands down so i wont spoil it.

So ya its fun, enjoyable but nowhere near above any kind of criticism even though its one of the most fun manga i have read

If I could sum up this review in a sentence, it would be "This is a harem manga with monster girls". Monster Musume neither fails to reach this statement, nor does it exceed expectations.

All of the parts needed to create a harem manga are present; a bland MC, a myriad of cute albeit generic girls, and plenty of situations that almost inevitably result in those sugary ecchi moments. I went into this wanting pleasurable monster girl shenanigans and it gave it to me in droves. Like, I wasn't really expecting to actually fall in love with this manga, I really wasn't. I expected to like it; good for relaxing time if you catch my drift, but it ended up hooking me in with it's monster like claws, and I honestly was too stunned by my euphoria to notice the blood leaking from my back where it hooked me.

This manga is a very interesting one, it’s filled with humor, is fairly action-packed and shows plenty of adventure in every chapter. There is also plenty of detail in the artwork, looking very nice deep, but can sometimes look blurry also and jagged. As for being an ecchi manga, its clearly shown in just about every chapter and is shown very often, there are also many ecchi scenes can be seen throughout the entire series. In each volume, a new monster girl is introduced to live with Kimihito. Each one has a quick, yet mostly brief introduction as well.

The more I read this manga the more I realized something. The girls in this manga aren't the real monsters. The real monsters are the ones who are reading it.

If the phrase "monster harem" is something that interests you, then what more questions could you have? Does story matter? Does character development matter? Does any of this matter?

Monster Musume is a niche pick for people who are already too deep and can't go back. That being said, it's not the worst, but it's probably what you'd expect

If you're not ready, then don't read it, but if you are, then have fun
