Ajin has slightly better art, and isslightly darker than tokyo ghoul. Both have great world building and focus on the main character 'becoming a monster'. Once you get passed the first chapter of tokyo ghoul both hold your attention.

While watching the anime for this manga Tokyo Ghoul instantly came to mind. To avoid spoilers i'll just say both main characters are in some what similar situation in addition to their personality transition.

Categorize with horror themes, Deadman Wonderland and Tokyo Ghoul tells the story of a young boy as their life changes forever after one faithful event. They discover their newfound powers and must adapt in order to survive. At the same time, they struggle with their humanity and is constantly a target of other supernatural beings. Mystery also envelops the stories of these two series as we learn more about the origins of their settings. Both series convey graphic violence to depict the reality of a world bound by horror. Both are about a teen that is transformed into a ghoul/vampire against its will and their struggle to fight the need of feeding from other humans.

These two mangas may start off with a feeling that they're different but in general they're very similar. Both plot involves the protagonist changing into a supernatural creature and had to go through many dark events to become stronger. The protagonists are both involved in a organization that protects people while in Tokyo Ghoul's case it was to protect a friend. These two mangas' genres are very similar as well as partial art.
reportRecommended by Aleron
Both revolve around the tragedy and struggles of the main characters (Guts and Kaneki). Highlights of these two mangas include strongly-developed characters and complex plots.

Dorohedoro and Tokyo Ghoul involves a main protagonist whose life undergoes a drastic change. Their character becomes less of a human but more of a supernatural being with special abilities. Both series revolves around creatures who can do extraordinary things. At the same time, there's a dark mystery that revolves around the origins of these powers. Both series' story are thought provoking with a variety of themes. Recommended for fans of supernatural/fantasy/horror.

Both of these manga involved the main protagonist who were once normal people without any super-natural power. That however changed and now they're introduce to a brand new environment and must adapt quickly. Both had some sort of guidance to help them into the world and to teach them how to fight in this new world which are divided by 2 beings. In the breaker the 2 different beings do not collide because 1 side stops themselves from doing so, however in tokyo ghoul they're fighting eachother at the sametime fighting their own kind. Both protagonist were weak at first, however as the story progress they power-up  read more

They might not take place in the same setting but both series has a familiar feeling when it comes to some concepts. The main character isn't entirely normal (non-human) and in fact possesses superhuman abilities. Throughout both series, we see their inner struggles and coping with their newfound life. They do possess some human traits, mostly in terms of their behavior though. The stories are also grim and tells of tragedy when it comes to various events that often revolves with horror, violence, and death. I recommend Tokyo Ghoul and Claymore for those into supernatural horror.

First time making a recommendation, please excuse my poor English. Both stories revolve about the true meaning of justice and the fine line between wrong and right. In Tokyo Ghoul, it is a struggle in the protagonist's own mind between his ghoul side and human side, as well as his past and present. Whilst in Death Note, both protagonists represent justice in a different manner. The artwork are well done and have a similar sinister feeling, with unique character design and strong contrast. What I liked most about both manga were the large amount of plot twists. The stories are unpredictable yet logical, with loads of information  read more

The story is rather different (as the story of Holyland isn't supernatural whatsoever), yet the protagonists are really alike. Both Kamishiro Yuu and Kaneki Ken are gentle and yet, they're capable of being monsters for people they care about. The thoughts of the both protagonists are, in a way, really alike.

both protagonist has 1 eye that make them different from the others. Their processing in becoming stronger is really similar There are characters who are twisted in their minds. I'd love that!) Only tokyo ghoul is more gore

Stories about societies. Tokyo Ghoul and Beastars both tackle subjects in a really raw manner. Social "outcasts" having to fight primal urges and having to adapt to a new lifestyle very suddenly. They take place in very divided worlds, one group having to mask their necessities to blend in with the crowd. I guess you could see a lot of the plot points of each respectful manga trough a metaphorical lens, kinda mirroring our own world in a way. Anyway, they both have a dark and mature way of storytelling and I would recommend these two to anyone wanting to be taken trough a heavy  read more

In both manga's after a certain incident the protagonist's find themselves not fitting into society. Afterwards the protagonist find their own safe-havens, where they can be accepted by others similar to themselves and/or in similar situations to themselves. Tokyo Ghoul differs with more of a horror and action focus to it, while Shimanami Tasogare differs by focusing on sexuality and gender-identity.

Same author and similar setting. Main character was a human that turned in to a chojin.

Dark and psychological, with the MC being an "average" person who becomes a half monster. Creative with its plot points and tackles interesting themes.

The main male protagonist gets himself involved with supernatural creatures that changes his life forever. Dawn Tsumetai Te and Tokyo Ghoul goes by a story in a world that seems normal but has dark secrets. Throughout both series, these secrets are uncovered through complex mysteries with various plot twists. At the same time, the main protagonist tries to adjust his acceptance to reality. Both series series has horror elements and suspense as the main protagonist struggles o find the truth. I recommend both series for anyone interested in horror fiction and mystery with violent concepts.

Both Devils Line and Tokyo ghoul focus largely on having a race that looks human but transforms and feed off of humans. The main differences in the races in each manga are (minor spoiler) in Tokyo Ghoul the Ghouls' only food source is human flesh (and coffee) where as in Devils Line a Devil eats human food and can live an ok-ish life without human blood but their issue is not having control of their blood lust and lose control of their senses and transform at the sight/smell of it. A large theme in both of the manga is to create a society where humans  read more

In both of these manga the humans are presented as "the hunted" by other creatures (in Tokyo Ghoul, Ghouls, and in Yakusoku no Neverland, Demons). In both Ghouls and Demons seemingly have their own society. Both have horror and psychological themes and the main characters start off having to adapt into the society they have been placed in by no fault of their own.

Bleach and Tokyo Ghoul share similar concepts as well as visual representations in the narrative, they are both known as being of the highest class shonen series, the world and the characters imagery is influenced by gothic thematics, there is deep worldbuilding, with a lot of variety of characters and storylines, the drama blends greatly into the plot and the escalation of events, there are many amazing fights and uplifting moments, as well as really good musicals that accompany the whole storyline, they are overall magnificient gothic inspired narratives of the highest class.

I get the same vibe from them and the plots are very similiar (organization that hunts demons/ghoul goes on operations against the bad guys that eat people )

Similar dark and gory vibe to Tokyo Ghoul, Gantz removes the ghouls, adds aliens, more guns, and maybe a few less dead people. Definitely a good read if you're looking for a lighter, but still dark manga.
reportRecommended by TheAlch3mist
They have a somewhat similar premise involving supernatural as a certain type of "monster" exists in their perspective worlds. As such, an organization is created to hunt and exterminate them. The main male protagonist gets involved in an event that changes their lives forever. Throughout both series, they cope with this change albeit in different circumstances. Recommended for fans of mystery.

A light novel love-child between Parasyte and Tokyo Ghoul. Humans develop super powers after being affected by parasitic creatures. Both involve some sort of "organisations" being formed and they battle each other with their super powers. Both main characters have their life changed after came into contact with these creatures and underwent similar character development and revelation. The villain from volume 1 is literally Shū Tsukiyama with a different coat of paint. Isolator took the story in a more psychological but less horror way compared to Tokyo Ghoul.

Both focus around zombie like beings and have some moments of gore and horror and suspense in it as well too.

The character are lovable, different, and even relatable to keep the story going. It starts off normal then turns into something else. Not for the weak stomach due to VERY graphic violence.

Both stories deal with the same questions: how do you co-exist with a species that is innately superior to you? Is killing them the correct answer? In Gangsta., there are people of superior ability called Twilights. The main characters (and others in the surroundings) undergo a transformation that turns their whole life upside down. They suddenly hunger for meat that normal humans wouldn't eat. <>Tokyo Ghoul: ghouls can disguise themselves better than Monmow disease patients, because the whole faces of the patients in the latter group have become more dog-like.

The MCs in both Mangas go through significant development, and yet are polar opposites. While Kaneki wavers between his original kind self and the emotionless, crazy side that turns on when he flips his switch, Thorfinn continues down his path towards redemption without ever straying. Vinland Saga starts out as an action-packed historical adventure, then becoming a simpler story where he seeks to achieve his dream as peacefully as possible, while Kaneki abandons that side of him to change things the hard way -- because he lives in a cruel world he has to be just as cruel. Both Tokyo Ghoul and Blue exorcist are about a boy (Kaneki and Rin respectively) who both are something they don't wanna be. The two stories similarities don't go to much further but the overall mechanic of being something you wanna kill is in both manga.

Similar main characters Both start off as human and become a ghoul or a vampire. Both want to bring peace to humans and ghouls or humans and monsters and both have experience from both sides as they have been on both sides. Both become badass. Both get stronger throughout the series like any shonen protagonist. There's gore in both manga but it's much more common in the Tokyo Ghoul manga.

If you are looking for psychologic breakdowns, schizophrenic content and a protagonist struggling for his ''metamorphosis'' similar to Tokyo Ghoul, then this will definetely get your attention. Also, ''Ore to Akuma no Blues'' usually focuses on inner world of the protagonist. which makes it a very unique storyline.

Both have MCs that start off as weak but determined and filled with potential to care for their loved ones and peers. Both of the MCs also go through a metamorphosis where they become OP and get a dark side through numerous stressful events.

Yokuoni and Tokyo Ghoul have very similar premise of humans against non-humans, both also share similar storytelling quirks like dark speech bubble, characters mental breakdown represented as dozens of repeting words and a general similar style of using symbolism to represent characters feelings and development.

i haven’t read something that triggered the sleeper agent tokyo ghoul fan in me for years but gd this did the trick. modern monsters, a sketchy emotive art style, and a passively suicidal main character who kinda sucks, has inner demons, and must fight his evil alter ego manifested??? i am thriving.

Tokyo Ghoul and Okite Nemuru are supernatural series that takes place in a modern setting yet with dark themes. Both series has creatures that are beyond human comprehension. And throughout their story, we learn about the dark mysteries of the species. There are also mature and graphic content.

Vampiresque creatures that feed on humans in both stories. Both creatures have feelings, and humans are sometimes even worse monsters than Ghouls/Shiki. There are moral dilemmas in both stories.

A left-field recommendation for Tokyo Ghoul would be Kisei Juui Suzune; which makes an interesting companion piece for the former as an over-sexualized world when compared to the former's near-asexual/platonic world of relationships. In Tokyo Ghoul there are ghouls who hungrily prey on humans; in Kisei Juui Suzune there are parasitic humans who lustfully prey on humans. Lead characters Kaneki Ken (Tokyo Ghoul) and Suzune Arizono (Kisei Juui Suzune) are like two peas in a pod futilely trying to escape/suppress organizations and social circles that selfishly and desperately try to define their existence. Tokyyo Ghoul and Zetman comes with different premises but has a similar style. The main male protagonist gains supernatural abilities (although they use them for different purposes). With their powers, they fight powerful adversaries while protecting what they care for. Throughout both series, there is an incentive for the MC to take drastic measures to save their friends. This result in various results and they discover both limits and potentials to their abilities. Both series also involve organizations with secret goals that causes complications. Revolving around a world of modern setting, there is also graphic violence present. Recommended for fans of supernatural horror.

The settings are completely different, but both mangas present a vast cast of characters with so much depth and development through the series, specially both main characters, they evolve physically and psychologically becoming also fearless leaders, the only difference is that Xin already has defined goals early in the first episodes while Kaneki's path is unsure most of the time.

It's surprising how these two series share similar themes although Karneval is all ~*colour and sparkles*~ on the surface while Tokyo Ghoul is very dark since the very beginning. I'll go against the tips and recommend only season 2 of RV as simular(and the second half of it). As the last ~15 chapters of R+V have a really simular feel as Tokyo Ghoul in terms of MC development(and appearence change, lol) You get the same: - monsters blending into human society (though in TG humans know about them) - monster/ghoul organisation trying to overturn order - wimpy MC becomes more and more badass (as turning into monster himself) If you liked the change in R+V after FairyTail arc (into more dark and psychological). Then you'll probably like Tokyo Ghoul. The opposite is not nesessary true(too much fanservice  read more

If you had to write an outline of the two stories, these two will pretty much match. Both hito kui's and ghouls eat humans. The mc are somehow forced into that kind of world where they have to fight for their lives. Can't say anymore similarities because it might spoil the story. The difference between the two mangas is that... > Hito kui is more like a survival game >Tokyo ghoul has a more unique art style > Don't want to spoil it so... Have fun (^w^)V

Both have young main characters, whose lives change when they become half monsters. In Tokyo Ghoul, the main character becomes a ghoul, while in Devilman, the main character becomes a demon. In both manga, the protagonists try to keep their humanity intact, while also fighting for what they believe is just. While Devilman is more gritty and has more gore, both manga have similar plot points and explore somewhat similar themes.

There is a similar tone to these two manga, and they both include depictions of graphic violence. The plot and themes of the stories are also similar, as they explore morality and the dangers of labeling another group of people as "other." Characters are drawn from two groups, a minority that lives at the expense of the majority, with sometimes fatal consequences, and a special branch of police that hunts them. Both AnH and TG have bibliophile nerds as their main characters. Both are students. Both MCs were dragged into tragic chain of events by their crushes/ girls. Both start off as weak and indecisive at first but later become more mature and stronger. (But the change is more drastic in Kaneki's case) Both are seinen. However, TG involves supernatural power and the non-human ghouls with the Tokyo city as a setting while AnH is simply about normal human relations with setting surrounding a small remote town.
