What are some shows that are commonly credited to change someone's life?

As is the case with art, anything can be life changing if seen by the right person at the right time.

But there are some shows that do it, fairly regularly. As in there is a notable number of people that credit them for changing their life, because the show itself is doing something special.

I know of some examples:

Steins;gate, GTO, Evangelion, and Death parade.

What are some others?

3-gatsu no Lion came to my mind first.

Also, Clannad.

A Silent Voice maybe? I heard TotallyNotMark say that Your Name changed his life for the better so maybe Shinkai's work too?
This post is brought to you by your local transfem gamer goblin. Will not tolerate bigotry and will fight against "anti-woke" sentiment to make the anime community a safer place.

Death Note and Serial Experiments Lain.
@tchitchouan I've seen people who strongly relate to lain, so I get that one.

But why death note? it's a fantastic thriller and all that, but what about it is life changing to people?

@APolygons2 I think because it blurs the concept of morality of doing an evil act for a noble purpose and doing a good action for a bad purpose and all the intrigue and drama people can relate to all the complex moral crimes over crime, punishment, death and the after life.

I guess the big 3 maybe? They introduced a lot of people to anime, so you could say they changed people lives that way.

@Spunkert true, but that's not really what I'm looking for,

I'm more looking for something that does it because of what the show itself is, not because of external factors like "being popular enough to get people into anime"

I know a lot of people, mainly older, say Dragon Ball (everything) changed their lives or made their lives better and more enjoyable, particularly when they were kids.

I would say that would've to go to anime that are extremely emotional when it comes to execution. The ending most especially fulfills this condition. And while I can't really go out of my way to state any anime that had such an effect on me, because I decided to fully exclude any kind of lessons that it might try to portray in real life matters, after all, such things are just like advice they could or could not work depending on the advisors own experiences. In this case, as relatable as an anime might be, this is the real world and you can't expect things to entertain and still have you smiling for the experience at the end of the tunnel.

Here are some really good anime that did tell me somethings that changed my outlook quite a bit tho. They also kinda changed how I view specific media and their execution. Note to you tho, they are just kinda dramatic sequences on topics I found intriguing by the end of the day.

1. Akame Ga Kill - Really sad sequence of events that had me feining for more even though, the characters never got their full stories told in the 24 episodes that aired. Also, my pessimism will kick in here and say, it always gives me the reminder that everyone will die one way or the other.(Especially me, note to self btw)

2. Babylon - A more psychologically executed piece, that really speaks on human nature and the cruelty that comes with living. Definitely not fot the faint of heart. Watch out.

3. Devilman Crybaby(2018 Remake) - Well this one I'd say was something else entirely. One especially that deals with belief systems of religion. Had a lot of analogies that makes you wonder what will make or break a humans mode of thinking. Good and Evil and what their true angles as well as roots are. I'm a christian, so it becomes kinda extremely difficult to get through things that seem to be not right with beliefs. This is a personal thing so you can feel free to ignore.

4. Elfen Lied - Another that played into the more moral nature of myself. Would it be a good thing to allow a natural killing machine to freely roam even if, their current self is just a remnant of childhood experience accumulated through a negative light.

5. To Your Eternity - More so has to do with the trivia question a lot of people have that comes to mind. Is there any happiness in immortality. Just kinda playing with the analogy of infinite money and immortality. Which one would you pick if truly given the chance?! I think about dumb things like that sometimes so this show is just special to feeding my goofy psyche with scenarios.

6. Your Name - Allowed me to see anime movies in a new light actually. Nothing too crazy, it was just so extremely well done, made me truly experience how much quality these movies truly carried.

7. Parasyte: The Maxim - Well this one is kinda hard to explain. While I didn't enjoy it through and through, I did appreciate its message of what it means to be human. And what actually separates us from other creatures. While it was crazy in the horror department, it does raise questions of how humans will integrate in modern society if a higher life form decides to pay us a small visit. Would we condemn their ways saying our system of morality is better or would we embrace it and call them savages like we do with other species.

8. Koi Kaze - This one is more of in acquired taste and kinda creepy especially with the message it's trying to tell. However it is tho, I found it intriguing that real life people could actually be caught in such dilemma which made the feelings of perversion across the series seem even weirder.

9. Angels of Death - Simply put my go-to Romeo and Juliet anime, and one of the first few shows that got me hooked on the true nature of seinen and more complex anime. It was just truly epic nothing more. It was one in a lifetime experience to which I'm not even sure I could get back if I watched again today.

And lastly for now,
10. Terror in Resonance - I just felt sad at the end. I don't think I have the words to describe how selfless people can also be.

I do know one bloke on here who started boxing after watching Hajime no Ippo. However, I think many people wildly exaggerate when they say an anime changed their life... unless it's the insidious narrowing of interests to primarily Japanese media.

@Sad I mean for me personally, death parade changed my entire outlook on life and i still actively think about its message and try to follow it...

so i would say at least i'm not exaggerating.

Generally shows that are popular or that have loud fanbases. It can't be "commonly" credited if nobody has watched it.
I've never actually heard anybody say that GTO changed his life.

I have another answer too.

Mangaka Naoki Urasawa has spoken about how the first time he read Phoenix he was shocked that a work of this quality existed, and that since reading it, he has never been as significantly impacted by anything since, so much so that he would mark it as the moment he became an adult.

Wait really?

That's like the main reason gto is so famous to begin with. It's funny but it's definitely not top 50 best anime of all time funny. The lessons are one of, if not the biggest reason for why GTO is so beloved and highly acclaimed.
