Hansel & Gretel

At first I thought this started out like The Promised Neverland, then it ended up being like the Jennifer Lawrence Passenger's film. Still can't fathom the point of this story was. Especially with Gretel?, Did she ever exist or was she always a figment of his imagination ?

Wait, so was Hansel schizophrenic? No wonder Gretel's eyes look "dead" (as in, they're not shiny). Also, the ending song caught my attention. Why did they choose Hallelujah Chorus, considering this has nothing to do with Christianity?

ikr
it felt so odd hearing Hallelujah Chorus . That has got to be the most misplaced OST I've heard in anime

Liked the first two a lot, but this one was pretty bad. It felt the least connected to the original tale and the twist with the sister was awful and non-sensical.

For me, it's tied with "Cinderella" for best episode of "The Grimm Variations"

When I first saw the setting of the story, I also intitially thought of "Promised Neverland" - although the only thing they have in common is that their (initial) stories take place in some kind of an orphanage

It's true that it deviates from its original tale a bit more (that includes the plot twist envolving the two main characters), but I don't think this variation is jarring: the story's pace is on point and the main characters are (in their own eerie way) really likeable

It reminds me of a classic sci-fi novel "Captive Universe" by Harry Harrison.

Ok, this episode was really good, I would like to see a sequel of this one. It's really interesting and bittersweet; I think there was a hint about the fact Gretel was an hallucination, in fact her eyes never shined, only Hansel's eyes shone in the episode. The characters were all good in the end, a solid 5/5

The episode was... sweet, I guess... but honestly after the first two episodes, I was expecting something gory, you know to follow along with the theme from the previous episodes. This episode felt out of place and left me with more questions than answers.

they did it. They made this movie look like a faithfull adaptation of the story

Jokes aside I was surprised this didn't turn out a "Promised Neverland". And honestly it doesn't make sense that it didn't. Because I see no reason in growing and educating children like that, and their reasoning for being ready to be sent for planetary colonisation feels nonsense. Sure they did break expectations but it really makes no sense growing children in a run down foster home when your goal is to ready them for planetary colonization

FANTASTIC episode this time around right up my alley! There's no way of knowing what the twist will be until you get there and it's so rewarding when everything comes together. I also thought it was the easiest to understand and follow, whether because the story is less convoluted, they used simpler Japanese or because I was more interested/paying attention than the previous couple episodes. I guess everyone else just wanted it to be a literal copy The Promised Neverland but I think it's good that it defied expectations while still being comprehensible/actually making bucking sense. Other than the Imaginary Friend Gretel twist, but I didn't hate it. Mostly I just LOVED that there wasn't a villain! The previous two episodes had generic moustache-twisting villains but this time around you don't know who to trust so you keep your guard up only for the sweet relief when it turns out that no one is mwa ha ha evil. Actual benevolent adult figures, you love to see it.

I enjoyed Hansel and Gretel. I was surprised coming from how absurd Little Red Riding Hood, episode 3 was actually quite fun. As people mentioned I loved the Promised Neverland vibes. It had a good mix of eerie mystery as well as a creepy horror feel. I loved the hidden undertones/details in the show. For example the children's eyes start out dark when they don't know whats going on but when the truth is revealed to them they get a shine in their eyes. The "witch" was handled well probs my fave character in the episode. The episode felt dark with little to no gore which was impressive. Surprisingly more wholesome than the original fairy tale.

Only gripe I had was since it is a training facility I felt the kids should've had more combat training. Also if you think about it, what was the point of keeping the mission a secret? Idk not to compare but, Promise Neverland had the children in real danger thats why they were lied to. Wouldn't telling the kids in this show make them perform better? The episode could have benefited from a little more explanation imo, like not everyone knows what the snowball earth theory is. Also why were the kids significantly older than Hansel on the other planet? Does time move faster there?

The twist with Gretel was executed well, definitely better than Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood's twist. I went back to see if there were any mentions of her from other characters and the dialogue was written well to make it ambiguous that "you" could be taken as plural (nice touch, I watched it in dub btw). I felt her not existing was a good twist and fit well with the story better than the other 2 episodes. Honestly it's my favorite so far, I rate the episode a 7/10. Looking forward to the next one.

I liked it more than the first two, especially better than Red Riding Hood. This one wasn't edgy just for the sake of being edgy. I liked how there was a bit of a twist in that the orphanage's secret wasn't actually malicious.

I enjoyed this one, really subverted my expectations of the witch being evil and this being some sort of trap. I noticed Gretel's eyes being dimmer than Hansel's quite early, so I appreciate how they hinted at the twist. It's like a good ending version of TPN or heavenly delusion.

@APolygons2 I could understand this whole flirtation with Black Mirror (as of the third episode it looks like the whole show is going to be an anime version of Black Mirror with a Brothers Grimm theme) and homage to Yakusoku no Neverland, but it already started to feel repetitive after the second episode and the Gretel twist seemed like an unnecessary twist for the sake of a twist in such a science fiction story. The first two episodes more or less worked, but the third seems to repeat them with bait and Switch and elements of science fiction. Not to mention the fact that the sister twist, as I already said, was very forced and would have been more suitable for some kind of paranormal show. Especially considering that no one told us or hinted at the reasons for the appearance of the sister. Just to fit it into the Hansel and Gretel framework? Then it was even more forced.

@RobertBobert Yeah... episode 4 is really good though!

I think anyone who has ever been a creativ will love it.

@APolygons2 Well, so far it doesn't look bad even with repetition. It's just that the first two episodes and the anthology format slightly raised my expectations.

I never watched TPN so this is pretty "new" to me. Probably the one with the best first half so far, that's for sure, but when Hansel opened a portal to some future-station, I can already guess that it's going to be dystopian-world type of situation. I thought that this was going to be the one with magic and supernatural at first.

Regarding Hansel... There's also like no reason for him being schizo, since there's barely any tension and issues throughout the whole story. It felt like it was there solely for the "sad/shock" value.

It was really interesting at first. When compared to the other two, I'm actually really invested in this one, at least that's true until the reveal, since there's like 0 payoff.
Sure, not all story requires a satisfying resolution, but this is just the one that makes me go.... "huh?"
It's like sitting through a dream, it's interesting, but there's no point to this story at all.

So far, it's the one that has the least to do with the source material. Other than the character names, there's like nothing about "Hansel and Gretel" here.

I'm surprised no one else has mentioned The Witch's resemblance to Yuuko from xxxHolic. You know, the "Dimensional/Space-Time Witch". Don't really have any theory or anything of the sort, but I thought I'd just throw it out there in case someone would like to delve deeper.
