GREAT movie, but one question, and this bothered me most throughout the movie- The 'rape scene'...

So, is it implying that, like a porno, the actors are actually having sex? So in a sense, Mima actually was kinda raped? When they talked about it I figured it really was just going to be the way they film sex in movies that are not porn, but it really looked like he was... Um.. well... You know.

Still confused about things..
is it real mima get raped? I mean mima's emotion & expression that was so real.
and the scene where the photographer rape & take nude photo of mima?
or these thing just mere delusion of mima?

Gonna rewatch this.

Great movie, really enjoyed it. Had me guessing the whole time. The one scene where the Actress playing a Detective steps out talking about Mima's character having split personalities had me going there for a bit. My mind was absolutely reeling. After that though, everything started falling into place neatly and wrapped up well.

The majority of it makes sense, it's just the finer points that get a little hazy which I think is the point. As kanon-chan said earlier:
"he wanted the viewers to come up their own conclusions instead of having it done for them"

Kon wanted to leave a few things confusing for people to interpret. I believe he is referring to specifics like who killed who. I don't think the real Mima killed anyone. I'm confident that Rumi killed the Photographer. The others not so sure on. And we aren't supposed to know specifically.

One of the things I don't think enough people here are understanding is the significance of the website 'Mima's Room' Mima became obsessed about it. Her delusions didn't start until she started reading the blog. It was written from the perspective of the Pop-Idol Mima by Rumi. The real Mima became obsessed about it, reading everything. With her stress, guilt, and all other things going on she began to confuse her reality with Rumi's version, the Pop-Idol Mima. (Think "The Machinist")

If anyone needs help understanding more, PM me and I'd be happy to answer the questions as best I can.

All in all, I really enjoyed this movie. 9/10 I watched my first Kon film a few weeks ago with Paprika which I fell in love with. I watched Paranoia Agent after that which was really good but not as good as the two films. I liked Paprika a little more than this mostly because of the musical score by Susumu Hirasawa. Time to check out some other Kon films.

That was brilliant. I had no idea Rumi was the stalker/fake Mina until the last few minutes of the movie. Even then, I first suspected it to be another "dream" before realizing that all the missing pieces fit and it had to be the truth.

Though, the rape scene REALLY really pissed me off. I hope it was fake but it all seemed pretty real to the point where her eyes became dead.

Confusing as fuck. I have no idea what to give this, really. I assume Rumi killed everyone, and that Mina killed Me-Mania. But how did Rumi chase after Mima so well on a fucking roof, considering her weight? Yeah, we saw her floating, but she obviously wasn't. How is Mima not able to escape from a much larger woman, when she's running as fast as she can? There's lots of other stuff, but reading the Wikipedia summary and the posts here has shed some light on that. I don't know. I kind of enjoyed it, but I kind of didn't. I don't know how I feel about it. I certainly didn't love it though. Meh, I have to give it something, so I think I'll give it an 8. It deserved credit for fucking my mind harder than its ever been fucked before.

So...

Me-Mania and Rumi killed everyone.

Wow, at one stage of the movie, I actually start to lose track of what's real and what's not... Particularly the scene where the veteran actress talks about Mima having multiple personality... )

"WTF?! THE FILM'S REAL AND THE IDOL PARTS ARE FAKE/MADE UP?!?!?!..." Was what I thought for a second.

Show's amazing.

9/10... (It's been close to a year since I give something 9)

I just watched the movie. Can anyone explaim to me what it was all about? Who was Mima chasing down the street and who was hit by the trank? And in the last scene in Mima's room why did she see skinny "Mima pop star" and then her manager?

So I just finished this movie as per a recommendation from a friend. It's definitely not my type of movie but it was VERY good. I was basically on the edge of my seat the whole movie and did not expect that ending.

Other than the whole thriller part of the movie, it really made me think about the decisions I make/made and how it led to my current reality. Since reality is indeed a perspective. Ahh this is too much thinking for right now. Sleepy time

After watching Paranoia Agent a while ago, I've wanted to see more of his works. This movie has convinced me to continue.

Everything was a total mindf*** that was executed wonderfully. As I expected from having watched PA and read the premise for this. I also liked how the movie that was being made had similarities to what Mima was experiencing.

Overall 9/10. Great start for Satoshi Kon.

One of the things Westerners need to understand about the movie is that Mima is an idol. If you don't know what idols are you won't fully understand this movie. Sadly, the reviews I read in this site erroneously equates idol with "pop star", which is wrong. This mistake most likely comes from the translation of the movie itself. In the version I saw, when the original Japanese said "idol", it was translated as "pop idol" in the subtitles. I suppose this was done because idols are a unique Japanese phenomenon without any equivalent in Western society so the translator just equated an idol to a pop star, but in doing so the main message of the movie was taken away, since at its core, Perfect Blue is basically a critique of contemporary idol culture.
For example, if you don't know anything about Japanese idols you won't understand things like Mima's idol "graduation", the movie's special focus over the "purity" of Mima and especially, why an idol cannot even act in scenes that taint her "chastity". If you think idol is synonymous with pop star, you won't understand any of that.

Damn this movie was so freakin' AWESOME.

Really the story here messes with your mind so damn hard, like in that scene that it seems that it was all Mima's illusions since she has a mental disorder, and I was like 'oh so that's what happend' and a second later NOPE it's just them making the movie.

And in the end it was all Rumi-chan, i didn't see that coming.

Overall amaziing movie 9/10

What the fuuuuuck.

There's so many questions I want to ask. Was Rumi (Rei?) Mima's hallucination the whole time? How the fuck were her fish still alive? Did half of the stuff in the movie actually even happen? Was Me-Mania also another one of her hallucinations, and Mima was just subconsciously killing them all? Was Rumi actually the killer and just hid the clothes in Mima's apartment? Were Rumi and Me-Mania the same person? Is Mima really just fucking crazy and the entire movie is in her imagination while the TV drama is reality? Were Rumi and Mima the same person at some points of the film? Was Mima actually raped in the faux-rape scene, or was the guy just humping her?

And the ending. We're jerked around so much and then just given the simple resolution of "LOL, I'M ME." Almost feels like some cheap prank.

This needs more rewatches. Hopefully with subs and not the shitty voice-acting of the English dubs.

Nice movie.

I understand it like this. First the fan mimamania went crazy. Then Rumi went crazy. Rumi created the website and Mima went crazy because of it. Mimamania and Rumi killed everybody. When Mima hits the stalker with the hammer he was not dead just unconscious. Rumi killed the manager and went looking for Mima. She found the stalker killed and hid him. Rumi's room was a copy of Mima's room except for the fish and the cham poster. And the wierd scenes are just Rumi's delusions and shown from her perspective. And i think not everything is chronological. Most of is is just Rumi's memory mixed with delusions and split personality. The reall crazy Mima was Rumi.
The Photographer was killed by Rumi-mima.

Very intense movie. I really like the atmosphere of the movie. Super creepy and thrilling at all times. I just wish that the murders would have been more um...spread out throughout the movie instead of only appearing in the second half. Also, I'm still quite confused how Rumi became super skinny when she put on the wig but then again, everything is seen in Mima's eyes so it makes sense. 9/10

The reveal of the "villain" made no sense to me. Up until that point the movie was pretty great at making me question what was real and what wasn't in a good way. After Rumi is revealed it made me question how and what even lined up properly from Mima's perspective in a bad way (if that makes sense). Definitely has some fantastic directing/editing though, really dug the seamless transitions.

Great movie, while they gave the creepy Otaku away as a suspect.
It was surprising to know another one showed up around the finale

The story was easy to follow till about halfway
After that it becomes unclear what's really happening and what's not

It's a very nice thriller with very mature themes, blood and nudity added

You can tell which era it came from with Netscape on a Mac
Still it doesn't look that dated at all with the city scenery

That e-mail character at Otaku's room really reminded me of the scenes from Chaos;Head

At first it was difficult for me to watch the movie, as it's full of otaku/idol stuff that I don't care about. Then the rape scene was disgusting and felt too real. I know it was the point, but it felt too heavy to watch. The last half hour however was brilliant I think. I thoroughly enjoyed the feeling of dementia. So much that I re-watched the movie and I actually enjoyed it much more the second time.

Too bad the movie leaves some confusion unresolved.
And Mima needed to get some treatment as well...

Rumi has split personality disorder (dissociative Identity disorder) while mima has psychosis either from stress or schizophrenia. The stalker also has mental problems and took orders from Rumi. The plot is hard to follow because its from the perspective of mima who has schizophrenia and schizophrenics have trouble diferenciating different moments in time (thats likely why her fish were dead then suddenly not in a later scene so if that is the case it means other scenes in the movie arent in chronological order either) and she trouble telling what is reality (which is why she cant tell if shes real or if something is happening or not ). Mima did not kill anyone she seems to have only knocked out the stalker guy or he seemed to play dead for some reason and Rumi killed him after mima left. Thats why the plot is so hard to figure out, youre seeing things from the eyes of a person with mental illness. It makes you have some idea how something like that can be.

Of course there are alternative ways to interpret it that dont involve mima having any mental problems and having something more paranormal like going on from the illusion becoming reality but that fails to explain why she was the only person who could see her other self.

A good one, even though it got a bit predictable towards the end (I figured out Rumi was the "culprit" around 30 minutes before the end) but still it had it's share of mindblowns. It was definetly time well worth spent. I'd recommend it if you're into psychological shows. Now I gotta track other work from this director, it got me interested what else he has created.

The resolution is clear and leaves you in a pretty good state at the end of the movie, but good lord is the rest of this a jumbled up mindfuck.

I can say with clear conscience that, though I understand the jist of what happened, I don't know what the fuck was going on in this movie. Good thing its called "Perfect Blue" instead of "Perfect Clear" cause this movie was opaque as hell.

This movie is one odd fucked up movie I ever saw in history!

First a ugly man who records mina's voice, than killed Mina who he think it's fake, and holy shit this is one mind blowing to get in that scene. I thought mostly Mino is just dreaming since I saw bunch of scenes she was acting or in a tight situation where she is fighting someone, but the very last one wasn't a dream at all and my brain confused the shit out of me. At least I catch one of the scenes is that Mino was having a disorder of multi personal. But, this movie is very confusing that it's the very first movie that can blow my brain off than the other shows/movies I saw that confused me before.

Overall, I can't really think what to rate this movie. Maybe 8/10 I think? 0_o holy shit..........

One of my buddies and I watched it together and had an hour long discussion about what it must have been about.
Rather then just watching it yourself and not understanding, watch it with a friend and discuss it to get as much as possible.
Because just discussing it and trying to figure out what the hell was going on was just as fun as actually watching the movie.

Wow, that's actually really good!! This movie reminded me of Memento.
That stalker is creepy as hell, and he is ugly as fuck too. Well, most of the characters looks creepy as hell, but that stalker is just...ughh, and his voice, damn O_O
Mima should have just stayed as an Idol or retire as an Idol. I can't believe she just showed her tits like that during that pictorial and that rape scene (That guy who is acting as the rapist got quite lucky). I am glad that the scriptwriter and photographer was killed ahahaha.
I had to pause the video multiple times while watching this Anime because I had to eat my dinner and my friend is chatting on Facebook asking for some help, so yeah, but I still managed to understand the story. I don't know if my theory is correct but I think it is correct. At one point, I thought that all of the shit that has happened to her was really the movie they're making, and that they're just watching it.
