I actually enjoyed Alicization which was the latest two seasons. Mainly because Kirito didn’t speak or move for a glorious 10 or so episodes. I think its as good as Sao could get because Alice was a great character. Season 2 and the fairy stuff however is bleh.

I've only seen the first arc. With the original game. I got busy around the time the Fairy part came out and have seen a few clips of The gun one. I do love GGO Alternate tho with Llenn and Pitohui

With that outta the way I will say, I do not dislike the anime, It's not great, but it's definitely not as awful as some people make it out to be. It's a lot of people's first anime, and ya gotta respect it for that. I'd probably give it another chance if I were to need something to watch, but I'm not going to go out of my way sadly.

Yes I hate it.
It's unfortunate, because there are parts of it I like and got into, like the first half of Alicization, or the beginning of the first series.
But I just absolutely fucking hate Kirito and Asuna, and the writing is pretty trash sometimes.

I don’t hate it, I just don’t think it’s very good. I enjoyed it for the most part because of the fight scenes and animations but that’s pretty much it for the positives. After the first couple episodes it really hits rock bottom and doesn’t get better until Alicization and even that Arc still felt ruined. Although I will say, I am a huge fan of the starless night aria movie, I thought it was SAO’s best work easily.

I only liked aincrad arc and alicization and even in the end of alicization they managed to fuck it up with unnecessary fanservice. Fuck you, A-1 pictures.

P.S for the noobs: No, it doesn't get any better and yes, all light novel adaptations are shit, no matter what genre. If you want to have the full experience just read the fucking novel and laugh about how mediocre said anime adaptations are.

I think the first episodes were interesting but later it got cringe and unoriginal. unoriginal to the point where it's laughable, like they i think tried to copy some things from berserk which ended up being so cringe and stupid.

I enjoy the show. aside from the fairy dance arc I think the entire show is pretty solid. it's not very deep or has any interesting themes, but that's not what the show is trying to be. it's simply meant to be a enjoyable and entertaining show and I think when you look at that it's a good show.

I don’t particularly like Sao and the MC, and I don’t recommend it either. It’s mid tier.

The first arc is fine 7/10, the combats are entertaining, but I feel like the relation between asuna and kirito is rushed and a bit forced (in the first arc at least), and I hate the character of yui (she has nothing to do in the story, pretty useless).
The second arc was appalling 3/10, there is literally no issue, so the rapist is introduced to get in the way of kirito… and the result was obvious… the reunion of kirito and asuna is a bit satisfying though.

The third arc is fine 6/10, it started well, and the character of shinon is great. The development of kirito is fine too, a bit tasteless (to me) though (the character, at the base, is not very deep). but the end with “her friend” is a disaster (nothing indicated to us that he was an accomplice).
The fourth arc (Excalibur) : useless 1/10
The fifth arc is fine 6/10, the story of yuki (don’t remember her name) and her squad is touching, and asuna FINALLY has some development.

The sixth arc (alicization) is good 7/10, and has potential, but asuna is once again forgotten.
The seventh arc (war of underworld) is bad unfortunately 4/10, everything seemed forced, especially the combats, or the characters entries (the 2 characters of ordinal scale, what is the purpose ???!!!). At the end, we finally get a deeper development of kirito (I don’t particularly like the character though, but don’t really know why, perhaps, I’ve forgotten some aspects of the character ? I still think he’s a bit tasteless) and I appreciate it (it’s a bit late though………..). However, the final combat is trash (beautiful but trash) once again, kirito becomes overpowered, and it’s getting boring, really boring… and asuna, apart from waking kirito, didn’t do anything.

Idw if it’s an adaptation issue, and I didn’t read the LN, can a LN reader tell me if it’s better than the anime adaptation ?

I have mixed feelings about SAO. I feel like it’s a pretty entertaining show, with a decent romance in the first 14 episodes. Nothing really special. It obviously has its major faults like the incest and the entirety of Fairy Dance. But the fight scenes are pretty cool. Is it the best anime? Absolutely not. Is it the worst or is it boring? No. It’s simply mid, but pretty entertaining.
