Anime adaptations of josei manga with an emphasis on fashion. One would assume this means most males should run far away with their anuses clenched and never look back, but no: they are strangely accessible and appealing even to the more manly males that frequent this site, such as myself. Seeing adult(ish) characters mentally dealing with the highs and lows of AN ACTUAL SEXUAL RELATIONSHIP IN ANIME!!111! is appealing in Paradise Kiss. Princess Jellyfish's fujoshi-in-a-boarding house freakout gag humour makes it more of a comedy than a drama and even more male-accessible as a consequence. And the fashion aspects are presented from the respective heroine's  read more

A light-hearted circus-like genderbender with some substance.

Main character is an ugly girl that is made better by a superior man. Also, crossdressing.

Both are about female otaku. Both of the female otaku have social phobias. Kuragehime's protagonist is more real. But Watamote's protagonist is more along comedy. I think female anime fans will prefer Kuragehime. Male anime fans would prefer Watamote. Tsukimi from Kuragehime is no longer in high school, so she is more hikkikomori than the protagonist of Watamote. If you really like the hikkikomori female perspective, then you may prefer Kuragehime.

Both are, "Anime for anime fans", diving into the lives and culture of NEETs and otakus, this anime hits close to home with references and mannerisms that only an anime fan or Japanese culture enthusiast would truly relate to.
report Recommended by LittleCaesars
Both are quirky, unique shows about a group of strange people living together, featuring one person new to the group, with occasional heartwarming and/or romantic undercurrents.
report Recommended by Lindle
Both depict the life of Otaku, in Genshiken's case mostly male otaku with a few girls thrown into the mix, in the case of kuragehime it's a community of female otaku.
report Recommended by Korru
Both are anime made for girls that guys can really like. If you're a guy and you like realistic/idealistic romance anime than this is for you.
report Recommended by Hajin
the main introverted and good-with-needles character meets an energetic extraverted glamorous character and they work together to make some beautiful outfits

Kuragehime and Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo very similar as both main protagonists live in their respective apartment complex/dormitory, also while living with unique characters and their strange mannerisms. Both have comedy, and romance. The difference is Kuragehime is josei, so the romance will focus on the female.

Both are chill romance series staring adult, female characters and some crossdressing.

One of the nice things about noitaminA is that it features such a wide variety of series that it can be hard to draw similarities between two of them. Kuragehime and Moyashimon, however, are an example of two that will almost certainly appeal to the same groups. Both are jousei series with a slice-of-life element, but not purely that; they also include comedy, drama, and a touch of romance. They both center around a group of (mostly) young adults who are somewhat offbeat, but also surprisingly complicated and interesting when the series calls for it. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, they both include elements of gender-bending  read more

They are both anime about a creative group of rather unusual girls. I think they are interesting/ intended for the same kind of people, that want to see how female characters come out of their shell and do something that amazes other people. For me, both needed some time to grow on me.

Both feature main characters who are otaku and deal on some level with the issues surrounding their hobbies.
report Recommended by Numi
The female leads are both semi-delusional adding only to their unique charm, plus they have very similar comedy styles and transformations that occur in the female protagonist (to varying degrees of success). Although Kuragehime's plot seems a little unpromising in the overview, I'm sure after the first two episodes you'll see a strong connection between the two and love Kuragehime, too.

Both series have an unusual, hilarious cast. They're slice of life feel good comedies. They involve romance but that's not actually what the focus of the show is. Both are character driven with art and inspiration playing a huge role in the plots. Listen, I just died laughing multiple times during both of these shows. The humor is great. Kuragehime is more about the character journey, but Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun hits the same funny bone.

Both stories center around a misfit girl who does not believe that she is beautiful, and a beautiful boy who loves to be beautiful and have beautiful things. “Howl no Ugoku Shiro” has been my favorite movie for many years and i recently finished watching “Kuragehime” so I could lsit the similarities forever but I must also say that both even tough in essence are the same, they convey the story differently and each one has aspects the other dose not. “Kuragehime” is a Josei and I think “Howl no Ugoku Shiro” also has that nice sentimental feel about it. There are many other profound  read more

Both animes includes a heart warming, innocent, and somewhat relateable female protagonist who provides a comfort place for the male leads by sharing stories of past memories of their late mothers. Both give off a light refreshing feeling with rom-com vibes of the female lead being cutely innocent, and the male lead slowly developing romantic feelings with a girl they didn't expect to meet and get along with. Male leads are both popular and handsome.

Both focus on a group of mature, out of high school, (almost all) female otakus/nerds that have trouble sharing their interest with the outside world and form a close knit group with crazy antics in a slow paced slice of life tone.
report Recommended by NuttyNUTTS
Both are emotional and about the world of fashion. Kuragehime is more mature and cosy while Runway de Waratte is a shonen and has more suspense.
report Recommended by Aerror
Both about a bunch of random people living together and getting accustomed to each other. Everyone has their own story but are kind of weird family.
report Recommended by Eriis
Comiedies about the residents of a girls appartement, the less popular and more geeky women.
report Recommended by abystoma2
Both series have these similarities: - A girl with little experience with men - A transvestite boy, who captures the girl's attention. - The girl must keep the boy's secret, since it is in a way a person known by the means. There is a clear difference between a comedy series and a hentai. But as we go through the chapters, we see that the two protagonists get to know each other better, knowing the other's weaknesses, thus changing their ways of thinking.
report Recommended by OtakuNote87
Both are slice-of-life comedies focusing mainly on the lives of those living in one particular household. Both have a predominantly female cast though with a few important male characters. Also there is a male character in both shows who must cross-dress in order to be allowed into the household where the women live. A difference between them would be that Kuragehime actually has a plot and romantic progression, while Minami-ke focuses more on day-to-day activities and never advances the romance aspects.
report Recommended by ccorn
both are slice of life with unique character(Ristorante paradiso: some old man; Kuragehime: Otaku who obsessed with certain things). Both about working together with friends

Cross dressing centric rom-com anime .

super cute and short, heartwarming, with an inkling of romance

Both are super female centric, both have girls keeping a secret that if told would result in outcast from their peers. Both are really good and funny, though Kuragehime is better in my opinion.

Both jellyfish themed anime about a lifeless girl finding a person to vibe with

Both animes have a group of girls that have to grow up and become women. I think the Amars and the girls from Literature Club look alike, having problem with the other sex and being really shy with people not from their friends. Both series are also really funny and entertaining, with a light but realistic vision of the process of growth.
report Recommended by allieturs
There are a lot of characters that are similar to Mako, both are very female centric and funny.
report Recommended by momochi22
The atmosphere. Both series feature an intersting cast of non/otaku characters. Main characters having trouble with the appearance of another character. Takes place in apartement most of the time.
report Recommended by theredorangeleaf
Both have BL loving girls (Otaku's) and have boys falling in love with them. Both girls struggle with their looks. Both are comedies!
report Recommended by Vocalina
Both anime have main leads with crippling social anxiety and have very similar overreactions when encountering anything outside their very small bubble. They slowly but eventually learn to gain more confidence in themselves. There are superficial differences in plot and set-up but notable ones are that Princess Jellyfish is about inner beauty and has romantic elements whilst Bocchi the Rock is about music and making friends CGDCT-style. Jellyfish is also about young adults while Bocchi has highschoolers as the main characters. Thematically though they are very similar and both have visually creative gags and have well-executed comedic tones

Both are really cute RomComs. They're both funny and relatable at times. The plots aren't similar, but I feel the overall feel of the shows themselves is. Both shows focus on unusual pairings. (First recommendation, so sorry if it's a bit lacking!)
report Recommended by aaasherr
Both have similar main character (Baka/Kuranosuke) of an ambivalent sexuality and a rebel attitude towards his (very political) family heritage. A great part of both plots is main characters idea to spend a day in an entertaining way... with some random people (students/otaku)... while not being welcome (at all) Yet both remain within their very gender (seinen/josei)

If you enjoy a quirky kind of humour or something that makes you laugh unexpectedly then this may be right for you. The two animes are of different genre though so don't expect them to share the same vibe!

Kuragahime is a lighthearted, fun, interesting story that relates to Natsume Yuujinchou in ways that you have to see to understand. -Both Tsukimi and Takashi are surrounded by interesting characters (sometimes troublesome ones), they are also somewhat loners who have heavy hearts due to their parent(s) death. -There is also cute animal (sort of) companions in both and revolve around the characters every-day life. The soundtrack/music are very similar. So much in fact that I wouldn't be able to tell if I heard either one by themselves. Although they don't have much in common on the surface, they have that special feel to them that makes the story  read more

Well, I suppose you could say Sugar Sugar Rune is pretty much about two magical girls hiding the fact that they are witch otaku. Okay, okay...wait, no, so they're real witches. But aside from that almost every magical character from Sugar Sugar Rune wears brilliant outfits that generally remind me of Kuranosuke's style from Kuragehime. Oh yeah! Last but not least, both shows are very cute, colorful, funny, and lovable; although, one obviously belongs to the magical girl genre and the other does not.

Kuragehime is comedy while MP is drama, but I found jokes very similar, animation and colors are similar to and I think that if you liked Mawaru you'll for sure have fun watching Kuragehime.

Romance where the idea is accepting a person for who they really are and seeing the true beauty so to speak. You know how middle school students are...
report Recommended by Yemi_Hikari
Only reading the plot summary for hime gal, both seem similar for the fact that they have a boy who loves to dress as a women, and the plain female who becomes interested/involved more in fashion.
report Recommended by XDKeriDX
Both anime are satires about how only a select few women could ever look beautiful. The shorter series is pure satire while Kuragehime weaves a tale around a girl who meets a young man who believes every girl can be a princess.
report Recommended by Yemi_Hikari
Both anime deal with female otaku and not the kind that is interested in anime. They also deal with the male that interacts with the females trying to get them to open up and be more normal despite being otaku.
report Recommended by Yemi_Hikari
Adorable friendship between female otaku. Lovable female characters who are not necessarily pretty, and pretty female characters who are real people.
report Recommended by balm_of_olga
Both are about a group of young people, sharing a apartment together. Kuragehime and Honey and Clover are both yosei anime - series for older women. They both have touching scenes, combined with the same comedy.
report Recommended by Nerdo
- Both have idiosyncratic characters that live in an apartment/home together - Both explore mental health and psychological aspects of why the characters are the way they are - Romantic subtext for the main MCs - Both have a character that enjoys dolls/puppets
report Recommended by cornonacob
Yet having different themes, the personality and the relationship between the main characters is quite the same: Shy protagonist who lacks self confidence meets someone that's everything they're not, and by a miracle, this someone start guiding shy protagonist into becoming a better version of themselves.
report Recommended by Satan
Both anime are about socially awkward girls although for different reasons. The animation is similar as they were made by the same animation studio, Brain's Base. Also both are in the comedy genre. The style reminds me of the other although they're not completely the same.
report Recommended by VeenaVal
Major conflict in both stories involve the protagonists fighting to prevent their homes from being destroyed and remodeled.
report Recommended by PeachYogurt31
- Both shows have a very special humor - "Sea" stuff (fishing in Tsuritama / Jellyfishes in Kuragehime) - Some dramatic scenes so heartwarming - Same colorful style While Tsuritama is like an everyday life of four friends with some sort of alien stuff in the middle, Kuragehime is more like a josei comedy concentrated in romance and wishes to fulfil. So, if you want to laugh (and sometimes cry) with an unique story full of colour I recommend both shows! And of course, if you already watched Kuragehime you'll love Tsuritama.
report Recommended by puccapardini
Both of these anime are sweet slices of life with quirky main characters (Tsukimi from Kuragehime and Chiro from Shounen Maid) who have lost their mothers. Additionally, Madoka from Shounen Maid and Kuranosuke from Kuragehime share similar personalities and an interest in fashion/traditionally female things.

Both Princess Princess and Kuragehime have males who dress up as women and act like ones. Also both animes have a lot of comedy elements and a great deal of dresses. While Princess Princess has some shounen-ai elements, Kuragehime absolutely doesn't. But if you liked Princess Princess you will surely like Kuragehime.

Both of these involve children that want to be something else. Granted, Princess Jellyfish is older than the main character in Fancy Lala, I believe that they both still have the same problem, they want to be someone else.
