Very different styles and types of humour, yet similar in their simplicity, non-sequitors, and nonsensical randomness. They use both slapstick and wit at times and are genuinely funny. While Azumanga has nearly an all female cast, Cromartie is all male.

Both are slice-of-life comedies featuring a group of female high school students (and occasionally their teachers). The humor comes primarily from the quirky personalities of the cast in both series, and they share the same laid back atmosphere. The art style of Hidamari is a little more unusual, though.

Hetalia Axis Powers addpermalink

Both Hetalia and Azumanga Daioh have this sort of short episodic nature about them with each episode being cut into smaller episodes. It is a lot of fun but there are times where you will scratch your head as some of the jokes did not translate well to English if you are watching the dub. Still, sub or dub, both of these anime are pretty good.

Azumanga Daioh is similar in energy to Toradora!, and everytime I watch Ryuji's teacher homeroom teacher Yuri, I cannot help but be reminded of Chiyo and her friends' homeroom teacher Yukari; uncanny resemblance. Azumanga Daioh is a little more absurdist than Toradora! and has no specific plot, and is a little more low-key at times, but if you enjoyed Toradora! I definitely recommend Azumanga Daioh.

If you're looking for some nonsense fun, here you have two great series to pick: Azumanga Daioh makes you laugh like there's no tomorrow, and Fumoffu is not that fun, but it has weapons and more action.

K-On!! addpermalink

K-ON!! is an anime that clearly takes a lot of inspiration from Azumanga Daioh and resemble eachother in a lot of ways. While Azumanga is a lot more silly and K-ON is a lot more realistic, there's lots for fans of either series to enjoy. Fun, lighthearted slice of life with plenty of hilarious comedy between the characters.

This show was basically Azumanga, but with less variety in jokes, and more lesbians. This is not necessarily a bad thing, because I loved Azumanga, and greatly enjoyed this show, as well. If you like gag comedies about cute girls, this show is probably up your alley.

For slice-of-life shows, Tonari no Seki-kun and Azumanga Daioh take it to a level of fascination with its small, yet colorful cast of characters. Innovative ideas about simple school life are transformed into absurdities that will draw in your attention. The dialogues spoken have the strength to bring attention toward both what's happening and the characters themselves. And because both series take place in a school life setting, you'll expect plenty of activities going around.

I My Me! Strawberry Eggs is random and humorous, although maybe not as random as Azumanga. They both take place in school. They have a similar humour type. Personally I found Strawberry Eggs even more funny than Azumanga.

Comedy around high school girls. Though Sasameki koto has some yuri & romance parts leading to slightly heavy moments, the series is 80% funny and highly enjoyable.
Both series got good pace, arrangement and scripts.

Kanamemo is also a comedy with all-girl cast. The humour might be a bit different, but while watching Kanamemo I couldn't help but think about Azumanga Daioh characters! Hinata is a lot like Kagura, Kana's imagination immediately brings Osaka to one's mind, and Yuuki & Yume are a lot like Sakaki & Kaorin might be if they ever got together. Even superdeformed scenes in Kanamemo are closely mimicking Azumanga in style.

Both titles are set in High School with a large main cast of characters. Both shows deal with students in high school that go through random and crazy events that happen in their lives while trying their best to deal with school. While Baka and Test are set in a less traditional high school setting compare to Azumanga Daioh, they both have great and wonderful characters. Both are hilarious to watch.  If you enjoyed one, you will enjoy the other.

Both animes are good if you're feeling blue. They both consist of lots of small funny srories and it would be difficult for me to say which one is more fun. These two animes are about ordinary lives of ordinary people, but "Tonari" deals more with the family life, whereas "Azumanga" describes (after)school life only.  There're adorable characters in both of them.And although their animation is not that of a high quality, but... but what are you demanding from two brilliant animes that already have a soul and a full trunk of humour? To sum up, if you like comedy or slice-of-life you should definetely watch both of these. read more

Both animes are school comedies. Neither of them are very complex, but both are very funny and good to watch if you just need some humor.

What can I say? They're both slice of life shows with a lot of kitties. Sure, Sketchbook has a lot more, but without the kitties, neither shows would be the same. Sketchbook leans more towards the very cute, somewhat slow-paced slice of life genre, while Azumanga Daioh tries much harder to get laughs. Yet despite that I can see a lot of Azumanga Daioh fans enjoying Sketchbook (and vice-versa, though most people have seen Azumanga Daioh).

If you want a good laugh and Kyou no Go no Ni made you laugh, then you should start Azumanga Daioh. Even the structure on an episod is similar, short - funny "episodes" pasted togheter to form a 20/25 minutes episode...

Azumanga Daioh wasnt the regular school based anime, but Pani Poni Dash knocks it out of the feild in comedy and creativity. Azumanga Daioh had random moments and hilarious themes, but Pani Poni Dash is all round crazy, theres no telling what they can throw at you. 
Pani Poni Dash is based around an 11 year old girl, Rebecca Miyamoto, who is an MIT graduate. She returns to Japan to be a high school teacher at Momotsuki academy. Her class is crazy weird, with lots of interesting and not so rememberable characters. 
If you liked Azumanga Daioh, then TRUST ME, you NEED to see Pani Poni Dash.
oh. and pay attention to the background in Pani Poni, as well as the chalk boards. Theres always something random scibbled on them. read more

The creater of Azumanga Daioh helped create Mahou Yuugi (Magical Play) as you may notice from the character designs. It has the same random silliness too. An absolute "must-watch" if you can find it.
