If you enjoy your anime in a fantasy setting, with good world-building, then you'll enjoy either of these series. Plus they both happen to have well developed, female protagonist.

For both series (based off of novels), they take place in a fantasy world where there is magical creatures. Among other themes though, there are characters that progresses through grown and experiences. (with a time skip) The main female character in both series are also mature and has a strong bond with her friends. They also befriend others throughout the series and learns more about the world around them as well as themselves. In essence, they follow a journey of youth & growth from childhood to adolescence. There is also emotions that are spawned from events that are either moody, happy or tragic. Both series also  read more

Both shows are based on their respective light novel series by Uehashi Nahoko, and both are presented in a style that is somewhat different from the norm.

Both have a relaxing atmosphere, which is very calming, though it does get serious and there is some action. However Natsume is more orientated towards the supernatural, and Erin is focused more on fantasy. Natsume also seems to be aimed at an older audience. Both are good watches to unwind though.

Both have girls who care for animals which are misunderstood and often violent.

Female protagonist desperate for knowledge has to learn life skills to survive in pseudo fantasy world

Both involves around a very interesting world, with lots of fantasy and with a slight touch of romance. They involve around conflicts, and both creates a grand adventure with bonds between beast and humans.

The similarities between these two shows seem rather obvious. Both have a strong young female lead and a highly symbolical story taking place in an imaginary world. They also share both light hearted moments and deep tragedy. One must add that "Erin" is the darker of the two and though both shows are aimed at a young audience "Erin" is clearly meant for a slightly older one than "Alice". These shows share many qualities and have very different flaws. I hope people will buy/watch these shows so that producers will be encouraged to make more animes sharing this quality and spirit.

Both live misery and loss of parents, and ostracism from the community and the line of conduct of their lives similar condition
report Recommended by Ala2-W
Both are aimed at kids (but will please older audience), have about the same length and have a nice girl with strong leadership that must face several hardships. Even though the settings and stories are very different, the anime will give you a similar warm feeling.
report Recommended by Sunabozu
Both of these anime are like fairy tales narrating a coming of age story, where the protagonist is an innocent child filled with dreams, growing up in a harsh world. Their artstyle may look childish, but these anime deal with serious subjects and you'll probably end up getting important life lessons in the form of a remarkable and touching tale

If you want a well fleshed out story, well-developed character, a very competent female lead and a lot of episodes, then you can't go wrong with either of these shows that have a very similar feel. The high episode count can be off-putting to some and I totally understand that, however both shows are great at keeping you interested in the story so if you made it through one, you can definitely make through the other. Kemono no Souja Erin is in my opinion the better show but both are very much worth spending the time to watch.

Both anime feature children who have to survive in a world with adult themes going on and politics. Both involve character development over a period of time. Both involve very good people behind the anime. In the case of Kemono no Souja Erin, masterful writer Uehashi Nahoko who also wrote Moribito, is behind the story, in the case of Mirai Shounen Conan, master director Hayao Miyazaki is the director of the series. Both have very good stories involving children who must come to terms with adult realities in their worlds while not loosing heart and keeping a sense of lighheartedness in the face of aversion.

The thing that reminded me the most of Kemono no Souja Erin was the heroines. I would say they have almost identical personalities, where they are extremely kind, caring, witty, and smart, with a strong determination to accomplish their goals. They also both have to escape their home villages from people who are trying to capture them. They are both discriminated, Shirayuki for her red hair, Erin for her green eyes and hair since she is a descendant of the mist people. They are also both learning to become master healers, Shirayuki being a herbalist, Erin being a Touda breeder and healer. Because of their  read more

Although both of the plots are nothing alike except for the fact that each fall into the fantasy genre and are pretty slow paced, they both gave me a very similar vibe. Both anime are extremely relaxing and just joyful to watch. While watching Kemono no Souja Erin, I was having a rough time irl and I fell in love with this anime because of how it relieved my anxiety and let me escape to this beautiful, magical world. I thoroughly enjoyed watching Kemono no Souja Erin, so if you liked the feeling Kobato gave I extremely recommend you to watch this anime.

I'm amazed that no one has made this recommendation before, both shows are about a young girl who chases after a single goal with passion and conviction. They take place over a period of many years, displaying the high points and low points on the road to success, and are very inspiring to watch. According to Animeadvice.com MAL users who liked Kemono no Souja Erin were very likely to enjoy Glass no Kamen so even though they seem really different they both capture the same feelings and if you enjoyed one I definitely think you will enjoy the other!

Both anime deal with the relationship between mother and child and how those bonds define a person's character. There is also the age progression factor, in Kemono no Souja you see the main character growing up and developing as the show progresses. On other notes, good animation and a pretty nice OST

Well they both start of with two little girls who are smart, cheerful, and hardworking. They give me the same feel and if you watch em both you'll notice some similarities

Its kinda hard to find any anime that similar to Kemono Friends, but in term of adventure and the main character starts the mysterious world from zero. These two anime fits each other. In Kemono no Souja Erin the adventure starts a bit late and the story were much much longer with deeper plot and development of character. Kemono Friends did the same from the very beginning, both has lots of likeable character and world building with hints of the mysteries in each episodes.

Both series have a calm and soothing atmosphere, at certain moments touching serious and important topics (it should be noted that watch Kemono no Souja Erin is more anxious and it has a more specific storyline). Also similar music and interesting characters, the main characters study throughout most part of the story.

-The story is in fantasy world setting -both protagonist is young girl that have their ambition ,Erin to be dragontamer and Yucie to be Platinum princess -Both working to achieve their goal -Have love story that kinda similar -Have some tragic element in it

Both shows have distinct world building, featuring two factions. In both stories, the main characters are people who had suffered from the internal conflicts, and stoically tries to find the right solution for this conflicted predicament.

An adventure anime with fantasy, action and kemonos And a little bit of romance, that its not de focus, for those who like
report Recommended by Bia_Oosaki
Both anime have a lot of flashbacks (seriously, it's exaggerated) and Kaguya's part of the story is very similar to Erin's aesthetic of taking place in ancient times. This recommendation is also a bit ironic, but it makes sense.

Firstly, I wanted to make a more complete recommendation, but that would be a spoiler for Erin. Heidi and Erin (to some extent) are literally very similar, and I don't doubt that the author of Erin was inspired by Heidi for this, as it is a classic. Let's go: Everyday life is often relaxing with the child protagonists, in a certain part of the story both protagonists go to school, they take care of animals... I wanted to say more, which would complement a lot in how similar they both are, but that would be a spoiler from Erin.

The feel/pace of those 2 series is really similar to me.

Both of these shows are about living in harmony with creatures who are hard to understand. While Kemono no Souja Erin also focuses somewhat on the politics and war that is effecting the country where it takes place, it still focuses heavily on the research and understanding of creatures just like Mushi-shi. If you want another folktale-like story similar to Mushi-shi, Kenmono no Souja Erin deserves a shot.

Both shows features heroines of young age, dealing with problems much beyond their ages. Both shows have deceptively vivid and colorful Ending Songs, and animation wise they do look for much younger audience. Despite so, both shows deals with heavy and serious themes - while Erin focuses more on the worldbilding, Brigadoon goes more on the emotional and psychological department.
report Recommended by Tyrraell
The series are sharing a warmhearted and touching story. Each with a kind girl (as main character) who learns about the world. A saying that applies to both series: "The tool/animal is not evil itself, but in the wrong hands, it can be used for evil." They are going for their journey, will you accompany them as they grow?

This recommendation is mostly based on the two protagonists of both anime. Erin and Anne are able to reach the other characters and the viewer's hearts. They are cheerful and very passionate about what they do. They also share a tragic background and it is worth noting that the supporting characters around these two help develop their personalities. While one of the anime is set in a fantasy world and the other on the real world you can watch both characters grow emotionally and physically and works passionately to achieve their dream even though they face many unfortunate events. Both shows have quite the slow start and the art style is more fitting for a children's show, but once the story starts to unfold, you could appreciate both shows for their unusual and well crafted stories, and for the mature overtones of the series.

Both these shows excel in being subtle as they do everything so well, they are not loud nor overdramatic in execution, and a sense of calmness prevails while watching them. Even when it comes to their romantic storylines, they are ever so subtle, and it is just SO beautiful to see it unfold. Gives a sense of realism and immersion to all the interactions that happens. I truly recommend these two, if you would like to have a new flavor of how anime could excel beyond what has been trendy for the past 15 or so years. they are beautiful, calm, subtle, execute everything efficiently  read more

Have you ever wanted a show filled with mysterious lands and cultures from another time? Well, these shows fit these criteria just right. Both follow young girls and their journey in a place filled with traditions they have yet to learn. They are stories about uncovering the mysteries in the places they come across and learning more about themselves in the process. There is a calm slice-of-life attribute to both of them that is soon enough replaced with a more dramatic and highly emotional tone. Haibane Renmei has a darker atmosphere while Kemono no Souja Erin could be considered suitable for all ages for the  read more

Both have themes related to war and it´s consequences. The plot of the stories is quite different but the lore and the atmosphere is quite similar. The protagonist tries her best to understand the world she lives in and they both have an anti'war pacifist message. Also both protagonists use a musical instrument.

Both are about a bond between animals/beasts and humans (KnSE shows more of it). Both children lose one parent.

Very similar art styles, both seem targeted at a younger audience, are light-hearted but have surprisingly serious elements to their setting.

While Kemono no Souja is more serious and of different genres, both have female protagonists who aren't afraid to show both femininity and masculinity, are strong in their own ways, and are proud of being theirselves in all that that entails. I highly recommend this to people who enjoy well-written females protagonists.
report Recommended by animedork95
Stories of young girls compromising their own ambitions and the good of others, with circumstances outside their control forcing them to mature quickly. Lots of character conflicts with political turmoil. Kemono no Souja Erin takes a more optimistic approach while Rose of Versailles is significantly more dramatic.
report Recommended by Shocked
Both are of the slice of life genre, but both share a dark feeling that other slice of life do not have. The anime focuses on the story of how each main character views their world, both the good and no-so good sides of it.

Both anime follows the life of a girl facing a lot of trials in her life, they both try to go through them with the help of the people around them aiming for being what they want to be. both anime follows their life starting from when they are under their mother care until they get older and depend on them selfs, learning real life lessons. there is some music, school and future job similarities too.

If you like fantasy, you will also appreciate Komono no Souja Erin. Like Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki, you will also find a mother with a beautiful relationship with her daughter. Both are warm, beautiful and sweet.

Both are about encouraging coexistence and peace between mythical beasts and human beings.

These are sweet stories about a helpful protagonist. They are also about a young girl who has experienced a terrible childhood where parent has died and have traumatized them and changed their viewpoints. They're complex and are emotional stories.

Both anime start slowly and boringly but after 6-10 episodes they make you hooked to the screen till the last episode. Both anime are novel adaptations, both anime make a difference and are not waste of time. Protagonists of both shows are charismatic, smart and face their problems with courage and smile. After watching both of them you will be in high spirits and would like to make the world better just like the main hero of the show tried.

These shows are very similar, despite being worlds apart in terms of plot. Although 'Kemono no Souja Erin's based around politics, warfare and is a fantasy, whilst 'Silver Spoon' is solely on farming and everything around it as a slice of life, what makes them tie together the most is the theme of animals. The two shows focus (not necessarily primary, but still) on the protagonist, plus the cast and even humanity, and their connections with animals and the purpose of them to us humans. People have the intelligence and power practically over the world, so the animals are under control, or of usage, for us.  read more

Both are long anime about what parents pass on to their children and how people learn about themselves by taking care of creatures more vulnerable than them.

Smart, courageous, idealistic female protagonists strive to shed their inexperience and naiveté without succumbing to cynicism or despair. Both heroines find themselves working for systems that are cruel, corrupt, and arguably necessary. Both face a choice: protect the system and accept responsibility for perpetrating its injustices; destroy the system and accept responsibility for the bloodshed that will follow its collapse; or tread a perilous and uncertain path of reforming the system from within. Both shows also feature brooding male co-stars with whom the heroine has romantic subtext and manipulative villains who hide their cruelty behind smiles.

The vibe in Made in Abyss is, so far, the closest thing I have seen to Erin (other than of course Mushishi, which does not share the child characters that these two do). Melancholic yet not without comedy, mysterious, and a determined female main who wishes to be like her mother, who she was orphaned from. The fantastical beasts are prevalent and integral to both stories.

Competent female lead character These girls are smart people go to them to fix their problems Somewhat tragic backstory Sorry the plots have nothing to do with each other really, but maybe youre looking for someone who isnt boycrazy or incapable of doing anything.

In ancient lands of kings and queens, magic, and tremendous beasts, two young girls - the eponymous heroines, Yona and Erin - must come to terms with the tragedies that defined their youth as they explore their world and slowly discover its unspoken beauty... a beauty they vow to protect, whatever the cost. Whereas Akatsuki no Yona is a quirkier, faster, and action-oriented adventure following an exiled, once-ignorant princess and her friends, Kemono no Souja Erin is a more picturesque tale that emphasizes raw, beautiful storytelling, moral dilemmas, and exploration as it depicts the coming of age of the daughter of a so-called "beastinarian." These shows are very similar to one another in terms of setting and characters as well as pacing and themes. Both shows feature young, adventurous female protagonists in light fantasy settings. The stories follow the maturity of the girl as she deals with the harsh realities of adulthood and discovers her own identity. They both have a slow and relaxed pace and feature great, well-earned emotional payoffs.

Childish presentations belie melancholy but ultimately uplifting slice-of-life stories about young women growing up in dire circumstances in countries at war. Both heroines experience grave tragedies, but they endure in hopes of finding meaning in their lives.
