Dungeon Meshi

Adventuring knight Laios Touden leads a small party through a seemingly endless dungeon, a subterranean maze full of dangerous monsters and precarious traps. Through the use of advanced magic, an explorer can sometimes be resurrected, allowing them to learn from past mistakes and give traversing the dungeon another go. However, when a powerful dragon eats Falin, Laios' spellcasting sister, she sends her brother and his companions back to the beginning to save them from permanent ends.

Though strapped for cash and equipment, Laios resolves to fight his way through the dungeon and rescue Falin before she can be digested by the dragon. Despite some of Laios' allies abandoning him, two remain by his side: elven mage Marcille Donato and halfling locksmith Chilchuck Tims. Due to their lack of funds, the party faces the daunting prospect of starving before being able to complete their quest. However, they find salvation in Senshi, a dwarven warrior with a penchant for cooking and safely eating defeated monsters.

With Senshi's culinary expertise, Laios and his companions struggle through the dungeon while learning about gourmet dining—and each other—along the way.

Preliminary (10/24 eps)

Criminally underrated.

Fantastic animation, great characters, great setting, great story, great music... there's really nothing missing here. I've loved every episode so far, and I'm always looking forward to the next one.

Frieren being 9.15 and Dungeon Meshi being 7.8 just doesn't make sense. These shows are of very similar quality in every area, and I personally prefer Dungeon Meshi (although I do really like Frieren).

Seriously, give it a watch. It's great.

Apparently my review needs more information, so... I guess I'll just gush about the show some more.

I really love how teamwork is emphasized in Dungeon Meshi. The main characters only get as far as they do ... because they're working together. I think teamwork and strategy are some of the most fun things to witness in battle manga/anime, but they're few and far between. Now, there's nothing wrong with a good 1v1 battle, but some of my favorite moments in shows like One Piece are when you have the crew working together.

All of the characters feel very real, and their behavior is very consistent. They have their disagreements, their own strengths/weaknesses and it's a lot of fun watching them work things out. This isn't a power fantasy, and I think that helps a lot towards suspending my disbelief. You don't see a whole lot outside of the dungeon, but everything feels like it makes sense and fits into the world nicely.

The main gimmick of the show, "dungeon food," is a fantastic way to emphasize that realism. What would happen if you actually had to delve into a dungeon for weeks at a time? It's a simple concept, but I think it goes a long way towards helping the viewer sympathize with the show's world.

Anyway, I could keep rambling, but I think I've hit my quota.

Mixed Feelings

Preliminary (4/24 eps)

I'll try to keep this review succinct and to the point.

This series has both it's positives and it's negatives. Let's start with the negatives. I cannot speak for the source material but this show's pacing feels very slow and I almost wanted to stop watching during episode 2 because of how boring it got. I tried to give this show a chance so I watched 4 episodes but it's still largely disappointed me. I think the biggest problem this series has is that the main cast are dull and unfunny. Another series from the fantasy genre like Konosuba does a significantly better job with it's ... comedic scenes, I think this series could learn from that. Unlike in Dungeon Meshi, the main characters in Konosuba have genuine charm and make you want to keep watching. Megumin's passion for explosion magic is appealing and her interactions with Kazuma are always hilarious. The scene where she tries to embarrass him in front of some townspeople while they're both covered in slime is probably my favourite. Compare that to Marcille from this series and it seems like her personality is basically just being a klutz. Now onto the positives... I guess I can't really think of any off the top of my head. There are a few good things about this series though, I am sure. It wasn't good but it wasn't absolutely horrible either.

TLDR:
It's a bad, boring, show with bad visuals and I don't think it's worth wasting time on. I would give it a 4/10 Watch Shoukugeki no Souma instead, that's a much more entertaining show and has much nicer looking character designs.


Story:
4/10
It's like Isekai Shokudou but bad. This is one of those shows where everything is really forgettable and it feels like nothing is going on, it's been incredibly boring so far. Far too much time is wasted on mundane things and the episodes feel like they drag on forever. The show's comedy skits have also failed to make me laugh even once. I really regret ... watching this show.

Characters:
4.75/10
None of the characters are entertaining to watch, they hardly even feel like characters. Marcille is plain annoying and Senshi doesn't really have a personality besides being just dumb.

Visuals:
4.5/10
The style looks very unappealing. It doesn't look cool like an anime, it feels like it could be on cartoon network.

Character Designs:
4/10
A lot of the character designs in this show look awful and have oversized noses which are gross. This is one of the worst aspects of the show. It feels like it's trying too hard to be different and as a consequence, it's not putting enough consideration into trying to look visually appealing. It fails at something basic that most Japanese animations get right. Fantasy is good and takes advantage of the medium when it beautifies things beyond what is purely realistic. Anime characters look beautiful because the attractive features such as eyes are enlarged, made more colorful and detailed, whilst at the same time less emphasis is put on unattractive features like noses. This series has not taken heed to that sensibility.

Music & OST:
6/10
Nothing stands out but nothing is particularly terrible either.
