A human dilemma is confronted in both Ghost in the Shell and Ergo Proxy: when machines gain sentience, what measure are they to humans? In Ghost, human and cybernetic elements are freely mixed until the line between them blurs, leaving us with a woman like Major Kusanagi. She doesn't even know for sure which one she started out as.
