Earthian (Manga) add
No review for this classic manga? What a travesty! I will attempt to rectify that here. Be warned, however, that this won't be a typical review discussing the art style and plot and so on. For one thing, when Earthian was originally published in Japan, it took a long time to come out: over 15 years from start to finish! Many aspects of the manga, including the art style and the author's willingness to tackle subtextual themes head-on, changed from beginning to end.

My feelings on the beginning of the manga are mixed. The first volume (collected in English) is very episodic, which is cool, ...

Bakuman. (Manga) add
Preliminary (27/176 chp)
AKA The manga by the Death Note writer-artist team about... a writer-artist team trying to conquer the world of shounen manga. LOL!

Quick Overview: Shujin (writer) and Mashiro (artist) decide to team up in middle school. They share the same goal, of getting published in Jump, coming in #1 in the popularity polls, and having their work made into a anime so that Mashiro's childhood sweetheart (a would-be voice actress) can play the title role. As in Death Note, the story is fast-paced, especially compared to other shounen manga - after the first three volumes, nearly three years have passed!

Writing: ...

Love Mode (Manga) add
Preliminary (10/54 chp)
10 volumes of mostly one-off chapters, revolving around ten male/male pairs somehow connected to Blue Boy (a host club). Volume four opens with a \"semi/uke\" chart; those who hate relationships with rigidly defined roles will probably want to stay away. But if you like that sort of thing or don\'t mind it, the series is a fun read, and the payoff in the last few volumes, when certain earlier events fall wonderfully, beautifully, perfectly into place, is HUGE.

Preliminary (7/127 chp)
Eden is a geopolitical thriller with sci-fi elements, sort of like Syriana with killer viruses and long explanations of atomic physics. It reminds me of those airport novels, you know, by Tom Clancy or Michael Crichton. Hiroki Endo, the author, seems pretty inspired by American movies generally -- for instance some of the drug-dealing or hostage scenes are straight out of action movies -- and he is also very philosophical. The art is clean, detailed, and realistic.

The story is that a mysterious disease is poised to completely wipe out Earth’s population. Somehow, though, this doesn’t happen -- rather, when the dust settles, 15% ...

Preliminary (Unknown/82 chp)
What I love most about this series is that every chapter is sixty pages long with tons of dialog. So when a new chapter comes out, I can enjoy it for up to twenty minutes before I get to the end and have to suffer waiting for the next one.

...let\'s try that again. The amazing thing about this manga is that Sugiura doesn’t forget *anything*. I hear she only plans two or three chapters in advance? But considering the size of the chapters this is like planning an entire volume in advance. Her attention to detail is, frankly, obsessive, but it\'s that obsession ...

Nana (Manga) add
Preliminary (Unknown/84 chp)
Overall I think NANA’s main selling point is “realism” and that it’s a pretty realistic look at the Japanese music industry, though dramatized, of course. The characters feel like real people and the relationships, which are really an extension of the characters, almost never go in foreseeable directions. Some intriguing backstory has come to light and I\'m in suspense on several fronts -- I really want to know whether things will turn out okay for these characters.

But at the end of the day, I think Ai Yazawa\'s Paradise Kiss is better, because it is tighter. Nana is full of drama and ...

Mixed Feelings
Preliminary (Unknown/148 chp)
Hilarious premise -- Sunako, the \"wallflower\" of the title, is not just shy but a certifiably insane horror movie maniac -- but eight volumes later this manga STILL shows absolutely no movement towards any kind of resolution, either of the main plot or of the romantic subplot. I love the characters, but I can only take so many gag chapters. Recommended if you\'re a Japanese horror movie fan or love parodies, but you have to accept that humor takes precedence over the plot.

Gouhou Drug (Manga) add
Not officially dropped, but probably low on CLAMP\'s \"to-finish\" list. xXxHolic does the whole \"guy who can See Things is forced to run errands for mysterious shop owner\" thing better. Mild BL fanservice between the two main characters is the only real draw.

Doubt!! (Manga) add
Preliminary (10/28 chp)
Awesomely funny writing that comes across great in translation. Ultimately gave this up because I am just not that interested in the power struggles of high school girls determined to be popular, but others might like it. Read if you liked Peach Girl or Gals!.
