Finally finished Wanitokagegisu. Weird, I started reading it years ago. Picked it back up in my 30s, and am living a life eerily similar to the protagonists (night shift worker, works alone, apathetic and lonesome)...
That alone made me give it a 9.
If we're being honest, the manga a few issues, mainly dealing with the plot.
Story had quite a few far-fetched scenarios (kinda like Ciguatera). It featured a lot of winding, branching storylines, and introductions of side characters that would suddenly disappear without any reason (I guess like real life?). Another major issue is that I don't think the author fully explored the themes he was looking at.
Overall, still an enjoyable read. He's one of my all time favourite mangakas. Love his unique art. Started with Ping Pong Club, and moved through his catalogue really fast. Some of the most hilarious manga I've ever read. Really enjoyed Himizu, and wish he could make another "serious" seinen. But, he's a master of this darkly comic, slice of life stuff.
Anyway, does anyone know if any scanlators are doing his new(er) work? Saw someone tweet something really positive about Saltiness and the synopsis looks right up my alley.

I really love anime that stays true to the artists intent and artistic style and sensibility. Dorohedoro does just that.
The plot is somewhat meandering and the mysteries of the show build and build, without offering ANY answers whatsoever over the 12 episodes. This should really be a 24 episode run. That said, the show is saved by the immensely enjoyable characters and the absolutely gorgeous art.
From the bumblingly goofy and ultra-violent Caiman, to the hilariously spastic Ebisu, to badass mo-fo couple of Shin & Noi. These are some of the most memorable characters I've come across. And, who can forget the Shockingly awesome Johnson!

Above all, the favourite part of this anime for me is the art. As mentioned, it captures Q Hayashida's intricate, moody style that is immediately recognisable and incredibly dynamic.
If you're looking for a fun, whacked out, violent seinen, then you should check this out. It leaves a lot of unanswered questions and unfilled plot holes, but you can always go to the manga.

I absolutely love this manga and mangaka. His work reminds me of the films by Takashi Miike, or the novels of Ryu Murakami (particularly Coin Locker Babies). If you enjoy surreal, ultra-violent, atmospheric seinen, then this should be in your wheelhouse. It also happens to be hilarious (in a very dark way).
Upon first blush, the art may appear unimpressive, with its unpolished, sketchy style. However, I feel that this is what gives the manga it's unique feel. Within a few pages, you can see that the artist has a distinct artistic sensibility, and is an intensely talented storyteller, with the movement flowing seamlessly from panel

to panel. His character expressions are also on point and hilarious. The only knock I'd have against him is that he tends to draw the female characters similarly (they're all cute af, which might be a pro). All in all, I really respect mangaka's who are able to develop a unique style that is immediately recognisable. Artists like Inio Asano, Hiroaki Samura, Q Hayashida, or Junji Ito come to mind. Its a big reason I can't stand shonen or shoujo manga. The aesthetic is so strongly associated with the genre that artists rarely feel they can deviate from it.
You really need to have an affinity for a particular type of seinen for this manga to be enjoyable. This is not your typical manga.

In a sea of absolute shit, One Punch Man stands alone as the ONLY worthwhile series this year (2015). This is not hyperbole.
The brilliance of OPM is it's ability to successfully parody every vapid shounen action anime that has flooded the market these past 20, 30 years.
It takes stale tropes, themes and character archetypes and hilariously mocks them with one seemingly simple character trait, or plot device.
To be clear about what I mean by stale trope, basically the excruciating DBZ/Bleach/etc anime trope is as follows.
Weak hero gets beat-down. Recovers. Powers up. Battles bad guy in round 2. Wins. Season 2. Meets even more powerful
...
bad guy. Rinse. Repeat....
Basically, you watch one, you watched them all.
So, what makes OPM different? With Saitama we get a hero who can literally destroy any enemy with one single punch. Fucking BRILLIANT. That sole premise throws the whole traditional action narrative structure out of whack and provides for some truly interesting scenarios.
Unfortunately, I do see bumps in the road ahead. Hopefully OPM will end with a single season. The only reason I feel this way is because I've read the manga... Urgh. Unless they rework the story (and most of the recycled humour), I don't see much future for OPM.
That said, this is a review for this current season. Not the manga and not for some hypothetical 2nd season. As such, I can only give OPM my strongest of recommendations. Watch it!
Edit: Upon reflection Sidonia no Kishi was actually fucking awesome too. And Ping Pong kept my attention (mainly for it's art).

It makes me cry when I think that something as mediocre and generic as this gets so much attention, whilst TRUE seinen gems are ignored.
Not only is the plot hackneyed and the characters hopelessly dull, but the ART...jesus christ, can it even be called art? It seriously looks like a trashy doujinshi. The characters, expressions, anatomy, backgrounds are SOOOO SHIT.
Admittedly the anime is better. But, avoid this crap.
Okay, so I guess you wanna know whether this is just a "troll" or whether it truly is as bad as all that. Here is a breakdown...the WHY of it.
Story

manga. Can you just throw in extra violence and bill it as being aimed towards "mature" readers? Well, I guess. To me, a "mature" manga should be original, creative, thought provoking, complex...IE MATURE. Or at the very least, pretty to look at. What you have here is a cheap rip off of practically every other shounen type plot line with added gore. Innocent boy, with great hidden powers-check. Cute girl who is a bit of a bitch, but serves to guide the protagonist -check. Mysterious killer(s) -check.
Art
Ok, so my original review got taken down because it wasn't "thorough" and seemed more like a rant. But, I disagree. I gave it 4/10, so I do see some merit here. Its just not in the art. While I will acknowledge that the mangaka does improve in later volumes, for the first 2-3, its really atrocious. The greatest sin in my book is his lack of creativity. Its just so...boring. He has ZERO style, or distinction. Furthermore, even basic perspective, and anatomy is lacking (he's obviously not a trained artist and learned to draw purely from reading Bleach). A quick list of artists who put this guy to shame. Jiro Matsumoto, Shintarou Kago, Tsutomu Nihei, Minuru Furuya, Asano Inio...just to name a few.
Character
Yes, there are characters...No one interesting or well examined, but there are characters.... The people that populate this manga are your typical manga archetypes. Nothing new. Nothing different. God, yet another pussy, shit eating virgin protagonist, paired with a loud mouthed, violent, tsundere cute girl. There's nothing wrong with these archetypes, but do SOMETHING, anything, different/fresh/new...please.
Enjoyment
Its the same numb, zone-out, brainless enjoyment you'd get from Dragonball or Bleach. Plus gore.
Overall
OK. To be fair, there's nothing wrong with this manga. Its serviceable. It's just over-hyped and thoroughly undeserving of all these gushing reviews.

Holy shit this is the funniest manga ever! This is slapstick comedy at its best, with equal lashings of deadpan humour. The play off between Kuroda and Takehisa is hilarious. Intellegent and well written, this is an wholly enjoyable series.
The artwork is excellent, clean and distinct. (As to be expected from Claymore's artist)...highly recommended
