quick madclown review
it's a 7.5 from me but i can't give it 0.5
it isn't as terrible as a 7... the reasons it doesn't make 8? :-
something about it was just difficult for me to absorb. not the concept, but the story itself was a bit difficult to follow because i just had a really hard time keeping up with the characters and who is what.
(and funnily enough, i KNOW i'm not alone, on of the reviews says that the lead used to play for one autumn leaf... but the name of the alliance was in fact excellent era.... and the ACCOUNT that the
...
lead used, the username is one autumn leaf)
i had to watch this in conjunction with some webpages which i will put here in case anyone else needs them:-
https://the-kings-avatar.fandom.com/wiki/Characters
(has most of the characters that you see in the anime, there are alot, and as another reviewer said, you miss out if you can't keep up with the dialogue that is happening and therefore follow the story. it isn't about spoiling though be warned, if you read too much you will kind of get a taste of spoiling, but, it was still more helpful than those moments of hearing Yu Wenzhou bought a new BMW... and you're there wondering... who's that again? (noone bought any cars btw, that's just something i said in explaining my struggle)
so this page kind of helped me to keep up, because the other thing to keep in mind which is what i alluded to above, everyone comes with 3 names minimum
1) user name that they play the game with (madclown)
2) alliance to which i belong (MAL)
3) my actual government name that i was born with and use in real life.)
https://web.archive.org/web/20180423115649/http://gravitytales.com/page/the-kings-avatar/glossary
(has terms used in the anime such as aggro and PK... which may be important for persons who haven't played any games using these concepts.. i as a above average gamer (not skill but rather number of hours spent on pc games over the course of my life) had no real use for this page, and you can pick up the general intentions of the words used)
https://the-kings-avatar.fandom.com/wiki/Animation/Episode_1
(honestly, if i wasn't as stubborn as i am, this would be an excellent resource to review after each episode to kind of help in following along.. basically the both times i perused the episodes (#1 and 10) it helped to explain and fill some information gaps for me... but this is sort of why it lost the 1/2 point on the score, because why do i need an entire supplementary document)
overall, once you understood what was happening i could see the glory (pun intended) of the anime... but it takes a little extra effort to watch... and i'll probably need to rewatch from episode one to really grasp the whole of it.
the score including the ed and especially the op themes are great
animation quality as well.
would i rewatch? - yes probably. it wasn't boring, i should also mention that because log horizon had some truly dull elements to it.
would i recommend? - to a hardcore anime fan yes, to a casual one no. it needs dedication to keep up. as above, it's not an easy watch.
would i watch subsequent episodes movies or seasons? - yes
TL;DR:-
7.5*

just a quick review to say why i gave it only 6/10
there were moments where it approached the 8-9/10 range.
my main issue is with the story.... and i'll summarize it like this (took me a solid hour to figure my feelings out)
... shadow exists in the shadows.......... but for what purpose exactly? he is strong... he is powerful... but to what effect? his actions are just too random.... and it frustrated me as a viewer trying to understand him and the script of this series.
the series has ended now... and i am still wondering... just what exactly was it that was accomplished over the past
...
20 episodes?
some people died... some others lived... but there just isn't any thread truly connecting the 20 episodes... in other words i suppose you can TLDR my review into this.... this anime has no plot.... and without a plot... just what exactly is it that i am watching?
at least it didn't go overboard on the harem elements... there wasn't a beach scene which is a peeve of mine (why must there always be a beach trip in every anime nowadays)
the fight scenes .. some of them were quite spectacular, i actually rewinded and rewatched a few because it was jaw dropping.
i honestly found some of the jokes entertaining.
so 6/10.. it's fine... there just needs to be something for the main protagonist to run towards.... .. because without it... this anime is just empty (i guess slice of life could be a possible genre-ic description that works... isekei slice of life)
......... my advice... wait until the second season (if any) comes out then to watch this... to save yourself needing to "rewatch season 1" ... it's only worth 1 watch

a Madclown review.
anyone who has seen the handful of other reviews i have done knows that I don't play by the rules. there are lots of "official" and "proper" reviews out there. i'll just tell it as it is.
in summary:-
did i enjoy it
Yes.
...
would i rewatch it?
yes. but i'm skipping the first 13 episodes
why yes for the questions above?
nostalgia, character development and likeability, its actually a really decent story with a nice score and soundtrack to accompany it.
score 9/10 with biases below
8/10 as a neutral
i think there's enough here for any and everyone to enjoy, but you have to bear in mind that its going to require commitment to keep track of the story and see it through to the end. If you do then once this is your cup of tea i don't see anyone not liking it, if you don't. my bet isn't on a flaw of the anime, but rather that this wasn't the one for you.
***
I honesty came to gripe because this anime for me is a tale of 3 animes.
it starts off with the first arc... and it pissed me off... 13 episodes of Youko being a nag that she's not strong enough not sensible enough weak and hopeless etc.... i was amazed by her perseverance to piss me off.
after that though... that's when things get juicy and the quality of the work shines.
that is around episodes 14-39 thereabouts.
another nuisance i had was the extensive glossary... taiho taika saiho youm... the only easy think was kirin being a ki or a rin and the names of the kings.... expect to be overwhelmed... which makes it annoying... but also adds heavily to the re-watch value. its alot like LoTR in that regard... you're going to miss things no matter how slowly you watch it to try to understand all of it... meaning that much like LoTR, i anticipate the second time around, to make some discoveries and have this all make more sense to me.
but... honestly... i can't knock it... maybe if it was like bleach an entire 90-odd episodes it would have been easier to follow along... but then it would have been too slow and dull so.. kinda hard to balance... in that context, they did a pretty good job.
anyways, the middle episodes i found myself quite emotionally invested, it is a pretty simple plot but, i couldn't shake the wonder of it all... "how is this going to work out exactly?" ... that desire drove me through this patch and made it very enjoyable... that middle part could probably get a rating of 10/10 from me.. the middle was DENSE... for 20 mins... alot happened... felt more like 25/30 mins... probably sounds bad but... like it was dragging but... it wasn't... by dense i mean heavy in quality... not like 20 mins to advance a story 5 mins.... or 0 mins aka making it a filler.... as i mentioned above.. i'm glad it wasn't thinned down.. because then 'd DEFINITELY be pissed
the last part really... after going through the middle... it kind of was hard to pay attention to such a small side story really... but.. it served it's purpose... i gained closure through it.
in the end... what probably could have been 10/10... didn't get 10/10... because it has to be really super for that 10... so all anime start at 9 for me... so i gave it the maximum because of the development of a multitude of endearing characters.
it probably was a Raw 8/10 though... but this is from 2002, i was in my teens back then.. so the nostalgia of watching something from back then... including the ancient artwork... the music also ... lots of anime had great scores back then and this is no different. amazing to think that this was 2 years before bleach... how is that for context? so the nostalgia component made me biased and give it an entire extra 1 point.
in summary:-

as an addendum:-
i realised that the manga is still ongoing, not a surprise to me because the concept is good, perhaps ahead of its time. lots of potential, i wouldn't be surprised if this anime gets remade or rebooted, but regardless i think this original will remain a classic.. especially given the era and the fact that some of these original voice actors (Keiji Fujiwara) have passed on.

there are many other reviews that more or less say the same thing.
would i recommend this? to someone who likes yuri yes, to someone who doesn't no, to someone who likes anime with deep seated feelings to an almost psychological level- yes
this anime starts of slow (but you push yourself through because.. its only 12 eps..)
it gets juice in the second half though.. which is sufficient to wash the bad taste from your mouth.. elevating it from a 5 or 6 to a 7
i've never watched yuri, i saw this anime as a cover for a youtube video .. possibly an AMV or
...
something and thought why not. my future recommendations are as above.
the thing this anime did really well though is the concept of forbidden love... which manifests in a different way in the way the story is told.... it very much mirrors life in that regard... 2 people like each other and cannot be with each other.
also after you have heart breaks in life... there is a vast chasm you fall into... and cataclysmic response... if it is true love of course. this applies to all forms of loss... death of a spouse or parent even...
when you understand these things and watch this anime... you really marvel at the technical abilities of all involved... to manufacture what are usually indescribable feelings.. into an anime...
this perhaps is what the other reviewers allude to in their comments about the "good elements" the anime has... and its "potential" to be something greater.
it really is.. fascinating.
finally...
if you have ever been in and out of love with anyone... a parent.. a sibling.. a friend/ lover/spouse... then it may be worth the effort .. purely because you are equipped to understand the subtle skillfulness of this anime...
apart from that though, Tekkaman Blade aka Teknoman might be a better choice (albeit non-yuri choice)

in a nutshell
Rurouni Kenshin + Bleach = Akame ga Kill
there ya have it.
i enjoyed it tho.
it had the elements that i liked in both of the aforementioned which personally were both high scoring in my humble opinion.
...
so if you enjoyed either of them = then i'd say.. chances are that you enjoy this one as well.
i gave it a 9/10
will probably re-watch it in 10 years when i forget the story
i need to make my review longer so i can submit it, so this part under here is just wordy junk...
the episodes were just long enough, as i was beginning to feel bored, the scene changed, so i was perpetually always craving more.
in fact i binged on all the episodes... it was hard to stop clicking to the next video.
there was action some amounts of humor love... the harem component was a bit excessive.
i was pleased with the attempt at least to develop the characters.... 24 23 min episodes isn't alot of time for that...
hoping this is now long enough.

as veronin said.
it had great potential.... honestly... this was my first (or maybe 3rd) psychological thingy... i thought it would have been alot less palatable.. but.. the story actually held my attention...
i gave it 7/10 overall, mainly for the effort... i could see the vision the producers had... and it truly is unfortunate that they could not have expanded it better... but none the less.. at least they didn't leave an incomplete work... with me wondering who is what.
overall.. i've felt alot worst watching other animes.... so it deserves the 7.
i'm seeing sequels.. so i plan to explore those and see... what happens.

i'll keep it simple.
on an official level my scores
9-story
6 - art
7 - sound
10 - character
9 - enjoyment
9 - overall (8.5 wasn't an option)
...
unofficial review
the thing about this anime is the artistry involved in showing so many of the intricacies in the unrequited love relationship
the depression sadness hopelessness.... the confusion and fears...
doubts
that feeling where you're just fed up
or that feeling where you're so overjoyed you skip around and sing and everyone can tell you're in a good mood...
this anime really really showed that up to my amazement.
not many people will appreciate those details... but i'm 30 and having fought for going on 5 years 6 weeks and 2 days... i can.
the only thing is the story dragged on only a little.
the art was average for that era
i enjoyed it... cuz i was able to identify with so many of the characters
my advice.... rewatch when you're in your 30s... and see if it doesn't take on a whole nother appearance to you.
yes i will rewatch it... but not now...i want to forget the story so that i enjoy it just as much as i did today.
