The two shows have a similar brand of humor that searches out the absurdity and silliness of every day life. There's just something about the timing and style of each that reminds you of the other in a good way. I was laughing out loud during both of these shows and would definitely recommend you watch the other if you liked one! XD

Over Drive

Even though one is about cycling and the other is about a rock band, there's a similarity in the personality and story development of the main characters -- quiet, unassuming guy finding a new niche and a group of friends through a new interest -- that might appeal to people who who liked the relationships more than the subject matter. Both Shinozaki (Over Drive) and Koyuki (Beck) end up having a natural aptitude that's brought out through the combined efforts of a charismatic brother and sister pair, etc, etc, etc. The shows really are similar in the general sense (not so much in art or subject matter, obviously).

Initial D First Stage

Ryoma (PoT) and Takumi (Initial D) are pretty much the same person. One plays tennis and one is a street racer, but they're both aloof prodigies that pull out new miracle techniques whenever they need to, who were privately groomed by their "retired" fathers. ;) So even though the sport, setting and animation styles differ dramatically, if you liked the basis of the story or the main character in one, you'd probably like th other.

All I can really say is their both baseball animes. So, if you like the sport or just sports animes, Oofuri might be what you're looking for!

It's very general sort of similarity, but they're both baseball animes. ;) And if you like baseball animes, you should watch Oofuri!

Whistle!

Ookiku Furikabutte

Both animes deal with athletes with potential who end up leaving one school system to join another because they feel like their not good enough to stay and their journey to build their confidence and hone their skills in a new environment. Whistle is about middle school soccer and Oofuri is high school baseball, but their elements of team play, effort vs. talent, etc. in both.

Kiniro no Corda: Primo Passo
add

If you liked the musical bishie aspects of Kaikan Phrase (rock band trying to make it big), you might like La Cordo D'Oro (a reverse harem at a high school for music). Story-wise, they're not so similar, but the ingredients are kind of the same. The biggest difference would probably be the fact that one's rock and the other is more classical. ^v^

Minami-ke

Okay... this might be a wacky recommendation, but I kind of think you'd like one if you like the other. They're both slice of life comedies that focus on absurd and hilarious exaggerations of mundane events in clever and surprising ways. Sure, one is about sisters and the other is about delinquents, but still... maybe you'd like it?

It seems to me that if a person liked the story of Kaikan Phrase, they'd like Beck too. They're both stories about mostly strangers coming together and working towards their dreams of being a famous rock band. They were very similiar but Beck was done better, I think.

Initial D First Stage

Capeta
add

Capeta has a younger feel to it than Initial D, but both are your competitive/sports animes about racing. Capeta drives a go cart and Takumi is a street racer, but they have similar themes about skill vs equipment and the meld of man and machine. The main difference is probably attitude: Capeta has a blue collar, constant struggle feel to it (like Hajime no Ippo) and Initial D is much more of a diamond waiting to be polished (like Major).

Major S1

Okay, the only real similarity is that they're both about pitchers in baseball. Honda (Major) is the very antithesis of Mihashi (Oofuri), but if you like baseball -- or sports animes in general -- they are both good/great shows in their own way.

Major S2

Both sports animes about an immensely gifted son and all the effort, work and sacrifice it takes to live up to his own potential. (I put the recommendation on S2 of Major because of the age similarity, but you should start at S1 if you're going to!)

Kidou Tenshi Angelic Layer

Hunter x Hunter

If you liked one, you might like the other... They're both kid-friendly animes about kids in a new, competitive environment, learning and growing, while searching for their long lost parent through a game (knowingly or unknowingly).

Nana
add

Nana feels like the love-child of Beck and Honey & Clover. If you liked Nana, I'd suggest Honey & Clover if you liked the coming of age, slice of life, romance/drama aspects of Nana. And vice versa. =)

If you liked

Nana
add

Nana feels like the love-child of Beck and Honey & Clover. If you liked Nana, I'd suggest Beck if you liked the struggling band/musical aspects of Nana. And vice versa. =)

If you liked
Hajime no Ippo
add
...then you might like
Capeta
add

Even though Capeta starts off younger than Ippo does, the stories have a very similar feel to them. They both have a blue-collar/Rocky-esque vibe to them where the main characters have to overcome financial and mental obstacles to succeed in their chosen sports (go karting and boxing). So if you liked Capeta, I think you'd like Hajime no Ippo too!

If you liked
Ouran Koukou Host Club

Saiunkoku Monogatari

Both reverse-harem type shows with similarly intelligent, practical women at the center. Ouran's a little perkier and funnier (and frankly, better) overall, but if you're a fan of the genre and like watching all those pretty, pretty guys falling in love one by one...
