Both anime have very strange and random humor. Especially random humor. The characters are arguably WAY TOO LOUD for both. Both have random parodies of other anime, movies, genres etc that are usually there more for the randomness than to be actual, clever parodies. (although this isn't true all the time with Excel Saga)

Not too many similarities outside of certain parodies and the amount of references in Haruhi, but admit it, they both have the exact same fanbase so... =P
