Helter Skelter is a nice exploration into the world of fashion, highlighting of course the more problematic and darker aspects....
Story: A sort of case study sort of feeling as we witness the flourishing and ruining of our MC in the eyes of herself and world, the story is very strong. The ending however in my view was not absolutely necessary, it could have ended without it and been much better (the Mexico portion), or done in a way that portrayed this particular character more colorfully. 8.
Art: Considering the story, one would expect some stunning visuals. H.S fulfills this decently. However, I would have wanted

some more detailed images of closeups. One common complaint with this manga is how "rough" or "minimalistic" the art style is. While it is partly annoying sometimes its not something that will hurt it. 7
Characters: Especially for the MC, emotions are strong, passionate and despondent, mixing well with what goes on in the story. The MC's monologues particularly are all very well done. The main characters that appear have important parts to play and are fleshed out reasonably. 8
Enjoyment: I recommend it, it's only 1 volume. 8

I heard some positive stuff about this manga, some calling it a classic, something I can only partially agree with. Given the time period that it came out in I think I can acknowledge why.
This manga has some strong and weak points, of which I think the latter outweighs the former.
Story: It started off decent enough, and of course this is sadly where most of the rational thoughts were found. I personally believe the author came up with only the beginning of the story and made things up as they went along. to it being very episodic. Hardly anything could transpire without the next "arc" closely following along sometimes a literal second after the last one ended.
I rate this aspect poorly. Lots of things that happen are very convenient, too much so and others that plain are inconsistent or do not make any sense.
A short list: remembering later on there is more food and water right next to them, getting hit and later hit again to lose and gain memory, time travel contradictions, ... A bit more specific....how do gradeschoolers, max 6th grade now how to construct a giant death trap out of wood and spikes and the like and where did the tools and equipment come from for it? Why would that "girl gang leader" leave in one volume and return volumes later to leave them a dying message that leads them to a place that isn't as advertised? (to mess with them? Why would she make the trip, risking her life for it?). Why is land around them so close and yet so far so that they never find stuff when convenient or early on? Why only introduce cannibalism at the end and have none of them think anything of it? Why would they suddenly adopt the MC's art project of his mother and agree to acknowledge it as their deity? Why give those creatures the backstory of having come from humans and have them being a powerful danger and then not do anything, have them go away immediately after they're established as a threat? etc. etc. etc. 3.
Art: Taking into consideration the creatures and assorted threats, its not bad. In fact its really detailed. Characters portray emotions decently enough, although you get tired of seeing the same shocked and sad faces.....7
Character: The characters are this manga's last chance it seems but in the end fails to save it. The characters behave in a terribly stupid way. One of my greatest annoyances is when the MC's "best friend" would always throw around the idea of killing their threats and they would always fight..."We can't do that!!.... Friend response: >:(---> hm okay :/. Rinse, repeat. The failure for the children to get home because the MC's love interest wants to stay in their terrible present because if they manage to get home he won't pay her attention anymore...just behave like you normally would be in the better world..., that he likes some other girl instead of her. He shows no romantic interest however... and if he does it was only towards the beginning and it was very minimal and not indicative of anything major.. It was to you anyways, he clearly does not love that other girl, only for survival purposes....etc. etc. The majority of the characters fall flat, serve as meat shields or are simply not memorable enough. 3
Enjoyment: It was (I believe) 8 long volumes of wacky, nonsensical adventures. The annoyances I collected from my prior descriptions... only increased in number as I went on. I didn't have an agonizing time but I most certainly did not have a great one. 5.

On a journey to find some horror/psychological manga (particularly obscure , unsettling, underrated) to read I stumbled across someone who advised not to read any works by this author. I went through the authors work and tried to find the highest rated publication to see what they had to offer, if it was any good.
This manga is disturbing.
It was a can of worms. I've never read something like this. A terrible mistake some might say, and something I'd be inclined to agree with. (I however have an inclination to follow through on the majority of things I start and sadly this was not an exception).

It's in a category of its own. This is a collection of short stories that won't take too long to read, about 5 minutes for each story.
It's not for the faint of heart. I wouldn't really recommend anyone read this even if they claim to not be easily unsettled. They are to say in the least very bizarre stories, centering around outlandish concepts which feature rough and nasty depictions of "satire" and "horror" including but not limited to: violence, sex, murder, mutilation, abortion, torture, etc.
I have no idea how anyone could have come up with stuff like this. These themes are demonstrated rather uniquely in (to reiterate) its odd story telling and structure and horrifying art. I'm sure every character portrayed in this manga is a terrible person, responsible for many atrocities and strange behaviors.
This manga really played with some extremes, many of which I found really despicable. However it is intriguing in how it seems to stick with you, making you say "What the hell did I just read?" and "Why oh why?" at the end of every chapter.

I do not normally write reviews but I personally felt a need to talk about it. Do not worry as it'll be very minimal in analysis, I mainly would just like to convey what I think it's message is and how that has earned it it's score. I'll be very brief.
School Days has been out for just about a decade and a half but even today manages to convey the ugliness of human nature almost perfectly.
I'll say for one yes that is this a very mature anime, it is not for the faint-hearted. There are many things that happen in the anime that

are unpleasant to watch and at times distressing. Similarly I myself do not condone any of the actions or attitudes that many of the characters have. I'm not alone in these feelings I know but I'm not going to be one to say that it's terrible simply because I hate the characters. A lot of the characters are in fact very unlikable but this doesn't mean they are poorly written or completely unworthy of acknowledgement. Just as we would not condemn an actor for their role we shouldn't declare this anime a lost cause for its characters.
School Days is a messy masterpiece. It focuses on the actions, attitudes, and effects of love and relationships within a group of high school teenagers. As previously mentioned; a character's actions don't necessarily mean they are poorly written. School Days earns my respect in not sugar-coating just how complicated and convoluted relationships happen, these things do indeed happen in real life and sadly more often than we think. Are these characters unbelievable? Some may say so but not at all completely. Admittedly at times it can be sensational but it is nothing to complain and scoff at. I see it as a somewhat satirical commentary on the genre of slice of life and harems.
Why do we hate School Days so much then? It makes us uncomfortable because it shows us parts of ourselves (man) that we are afraid of. Parts of ourselves that in some way or another can represent either hidden desires or attitudes or more popularly with its viewers, the things we fear. We fear messing up, being with someone we don't want to be. We fear being cheated on, of being replaced. We fear not getting the respect we deserve, of being mistreated or being seen in a way that we think isn't who we truly are. We are ultimately scared of being imperfect and incomplete.
I won't go into characters' motives or try to explain how I see them and their connections and relationships with each other. I'll leave that up to anyone who decides to watch it.
Ultimately I'd give it a higher score. There are only a few points of contention I have but they aren't too terrible to ruin its message.
I hate School Days. Why? Because school days is merely a mirror, an avenue that reflects reality.
(To make matters short, it is a very emotionally disturbing anime but I myself give it props for conveying and portraying it's artistic vision.)
