*Spoiler-free* This is my first review, so please go easy on me, lol.
I watched Pandora Hearts with no expectations. I found the anime randomly from user recommendations on another show. I was shocked that I would enjoy it this much!
Please take note of this: This show is not complete, and only makes it partway in the manga. It desperately needs a second season to answer the overall-plot. If you’re the type that can’t handle a show ending early, don’t watch it. Here’s an example to what I mean: imagine Attack on Titan stopping on season 1, or having FMA end on episode 30 -
...
if having those shows stop at those points would bother you so badly to the point that you wouldn't be able to enjoy them, then don’t watch this. Otherwise, if you can accept the fact that it doesn’t finish the rest of the way through, give it a watch and then finish the rest with the manga - that’s what I am going to do!
Review:
CHARACTERS:
I thought the characters were great in the show. Each had their own unique personality that complimented one another nicely. Alice is the aggressive, jealous type (essentially a tsundere), but not in the bad way that makes her annoying at all - I found her rather cute in the way she acted. Oz has a generic hero personality-type in the beginning, but it develops to be something more as the show goes on, which was really nice and deserving. Gilbert is the shy type that really enjoys hanging out and being with Oz - oh, plus Gilbert hates cats. Break is the funny, mysterious type that likes to mess with people and make social situations more complicated (comic relief). Sharon is like the big-sister of the group who seems to want to take care and help people in a somewhat intimidating (but funny) way.
There are even good interactions between the characters. The main characters, Alice and Oz, have a friendly heart-warming relationship (hints of romance). Oz and Gilbert are essentially childhood friends, but at times it seems like Gilbert is a little too attached - not in a suffocating way, though (very small hints of romance from Gilbert). Gilbert and Alice get in a scuffle with each other in a funny-rival way, especially if Oz is involved. Break adds good comedy relief, and acts like a mischievous cat - which I love. Sharon doesn’t specifically have many group-interactions with the rest of the characters, as she wasn’t as much. However, the small interactions that she does have, shows us that she does care about the other characters in a nice and friendly way.
MUSIC:
I loved the music. I am a picky person when it comes to a lot of types of music, but I really enjoyed what I heard. It’s got a dark-mystery-adventure with a somewhat upbeat hero undertone that fits the overall mood and story of the plot. If you like calm female-choir, some harps, and violins, then you will like the music a lot. (If you can, listen to: Pandora Hearts OST - Alone for an example of the music). I felt like the voice actors/actresses' did a great job bringing the characters to life - I wasn't let down at all!
ART:
The art was pretty good as well. I really enjoyed the way the characters were designed and enjoyed the settings that the characters took place in. The plot really focuses on the main characters, so there isn’t too much that happens in the background during these scenes. Animation is okay, nothing special or flashy during the fighting scenes. I only found one really bad animated part near the three-quarter-mark of the show, but it was 3 seconds long and had nothing to do with the main characters - my eagle eyes spotted it ;) Considering that this show came out over ten years ago, I am impressed with how it still looks.
OVERALL:
Overall, I am extremely impressed with the show. If you’re looking for a nice anime with some adventure and an awesome plot with great characters, give this show a try. The only thing that makes me so angry is the fact that this show does not have a second season, or the fact that it’s not that popular! It’s a great anime that has such an original plot and I would love to watch more. Oh well - I guess it’s time for the manga!
