Perpetually-pissed protagonists with mommy issues. One of them protects his sister and the other is protected by his sister. If you find one of them compelling then you will find the other compelling. Both also have exceedingly slow paces.

...then you might like Arigatou add

Same mangaka so they have a similar atmosphere and art style. Also, Believers is a spin off that takes place in the same universe. It's about members of the cult that featured prominently in Arigatou. Arigatou is the superior work and it eclipses Believers thematically, but both are very good and worth reading.

...then you might like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood add

Large cast of likable characters plus alchemy. Plus both have hilarious comic relief seamlessly woven in-between the serious scenes.

If you liked Shinseiki Evangelion add

...then you might like School Days add

They both went against all of the conventions of their respective genres, both have deeply flawed characters, and are both very dark.
