Boogiepop wa Warawanai
add

I’m surprised nobody has made this one recommendation, since both shows are awfully similar in structure, directing and plot. Both are episodic shows which are heavy on dialogue and symbolism, though Noir becomes dialogue heavy during it’s second half and is more action oriented during it’s beginning episodes. Both are dark and grim, and their soundtracks are very similar as well. As for the characters, both casts are psychologically damaged and one of the characters in Noir resembles the boogiepops found in Boogiepop Phantom.

Bastard
add

Both fathers of the main characters are egotistical psychopaths who have way too much power, subordinates and time on their hands. The mothers are dead and both main characters keep longing for them. The main characters are scrawny teenagers who have no social confidence because of their fathers' abandonment. The main characters have to face their fathers' evil deeds and save everyone that has been targetted by them.

Trigun
add

Trigun, just like Cowboy Bebop, features a lovable doofus of a hero who has a dark past hidden behind his back. Trigun is also heavily influenced by western culture and features a lovable cast of characters. Trigun is mostly episodic filler while also featuring an underlying plot about the main character's dark past. Both Trigun and Cowboy Bebop feature villains who shared the same past with the main character, and both of the main characters cannot escape said dark past until they have settled everything with said villain. There is a main heroine who starts off as arrogant, she dislikes the main character right from the spot, but then has a change of heart at the end of the series. There is also a badass side character who has to fight off his own demons as well. The only differences I can think of between Trigun and Cowboy Bebop, is that the endings are very different from each other, and Trigun explores one theme only (Pacifism) while Cowboy Bebop tackles many.

Kaze no Tani no Nausicaä

The first two Ghibli films ever made. They both feature the typical strong willed female protagonist, the same Ghibli artsyle and some amazing tracks here and there by composer Joe Hisashi. Both feature two opposing sides trying to achieve power, while the female hero tries to achieve peace between the sides. Both have some amazing action sequences here and there. I recommend Nausicaa to people who loved Laputa. Although I disliked the latter, I do believe both are very similar to each other.

Usagi Drop
add

After completing the very good Usagi Drop, I have to say that I noticed it shared some similarities with Welcome to the NHK. If you have seen any of these shows then you would know the basic story structure, a guy starts off with nothing interesting going on in his life, then one day a girl comes over and changes everything for him. The main character, after experiencing love and the life lessons given to him by the girl, starts to gain his confidence back, and in the process, meets new people and learns about important lessons such as responsibility. I recommend Welcome to the NHK to fans of Usagi Drop, they both deal with mature themes and issues while still being heart warming series.

Abenobashi Mahou☆Shoutengai

Both of these Anime are made by Gainax studio, so they have the same art style and the same color scheme. The main characters of both series are a little boy and a little girl, who both get help from an older woman. Both series deal with metaphors and both have very random comedy as well. Both series deal with mature and similar themes, FLCL deals with the theme of growing up from child to adult while Abenobashi deals with the theme of not being able to grow up.

Both Anime movies center around a girl who is half human and half robot (a humanoid), with a futuristic cyberpunk setting where humans live alongside humanoids and robots. Both movies center around a detective crew trying to find a criminal, but both movies end up being about a much bigger issue.

Kaiba
add

Both Anime are about children who want to discover their true identities (Lain Iwakura and Kaiba). Both main characters are extremely powerful, but do not realize it by the beginning of the Anime. Both Anime focus on heavy themes such as religion, power and memories. Both Anime have a cool cyberpunk world that grabs the viewer in. Both of these Anime are very convoluted and do not hold the viewer's hand at all.
