Tsukumodo is a series that leverages format as a light novel very well, but its quality rivals any other book. The story follows a small, well-written cast as they become involved with various "relics" that distort those who've acquired them. The characters' interactions are fresh and entertaining, working well with the medium, and it's hard not to love them.

The first 4-5 volumes are mostly episodic, introducing new relics in short stories that gradually build up over time. This is an unexpectedly esoteric manga, but it stands out from other series in a good way. The story is absurd, but not aimless; there’s a plot developing in this otherwise comfortable romcom.

One understandably might give up on the translation at first because of the strange dialogue, but it’s moreso the author expecting us to read between the lines a bit (which you wouldn’t expect based on this manga’s premise).

Overall, the characters are fun, the art is great — especially in later chapters which improve everywhere — it legitimately made me laugh, and there is a romance kick. Worth a read if solely ...
