I hate to do it, but I will... This manga is just a giant no. A fat giant NO.
The Kurumi that we know and love does a 180, because that's what we're doing in the sequel to a manga. Kurumi has already been redeemed, and her fans love her for who she is. Why is she doing a 180? What is the reason? Why does she develop twice?
And Eiji is an unappealing MC. Who insults the looks of your supposed love interest? Kurumi is implied to like people like Kazehaya and Sawako, because they're determined and the
...
opposite of her. Good thing she gets with a guy that isn't anything like Kazehaya or Sawako, and isn't even the opposite of her... He's just annoying.
It's almost like the mangaka was aware of people calling Kurumi queer, and she quietly just made this manga to refute those claims. Or as if people were shipping Kurumi with Sawako, and she wanted to quickly shut it down. Like, Sawako's cousin randomly appearing after we didn't hear of him ever? He just happened to be there? So we get male insert Sawako because the mangaka didn't want Kurumi to be queer? Yeah, no.

Definitely better than the anime! Sometimes, things take a while before they truly start to get their footing, as was the case with Kimi ni Todoke.
Kimi ni Todoke is a standard slice of life high school romcom. You got an unpopular girl that gets with the most popular guy in school. It's a cliche story. Though the strength of Kimi ni Todoke is how it tells the story, and the characters in the story. The story actually has characters that go through realistic developments and overcome realistic struggles. You have the person who's insecure, you have the
...
awkward person, you have the impatient person, you have the lovestruck idiot, you have the person who only lives in the now, etc. You have the troubles of love, and people getting rejected. I do love that this story has people move on in a healthy way, and there's no animosity left behind from the rejection. Even with the crush on older men, it was treated with respect. Obviously, older men aren't into young girls (unless there's something wrong with you), so the rejection is inevitable. Though I do like how they handle said rejection, and have the girls move on. That's the mature way to handle things, because most people relate to having a crush on an older person who's out of reach. I even like how they subverted the trope of accepting your lover as they are. Sometimes, people don't like themselves and want to make an effort to change. Forcing them to stay as they are causes them to STAGNATE, and this manga had a brilliant portrayal of that.
It's the typical slice of life high school romcom, but there are touches of wisdom within the story. I definitely recommend this series. 8/10, it's a good series.

Overall, this anime was slightly above average. The extreme high praise is due to nostalgia clouding the perception of older viewers, and it being early its genre. Though the extremely negative reviews are coming from people comparing it to Hunter x Hunter. I'll say that I came in with an open mind, and to judge based on how I personally enjoy it. I'm not going to compare it to Hunter x Hunter, and I'm not going to excuse the writing simply because "it's old". With that said, here's my review!
I will say that the characters are solid. The designs
...
are unique and the motivations are unique, for the most part. I really enjoyed Hiei, Kuwabara, Kurama, Kuwabara's sister (Shizuru), Toguro, Genkai, and Sakyo. Though even Hiei and Kuwabara would frustrate me at times, I overall did like them. That's one reason why my rating is high, because of how great some of the characters were. I especially like Kuwabara's archetype which is a 'bad' character with a moral code. I don't know, I'm just a sucker for those types.
Some of the arcs were great, and you can see the brilliance of Togashi's writing. The entire twist with Toguro, the romance of Sakyo, Kuwabara's honor code, and Hiei's character development. Well... Scratch the romance of Sakyo, because that was an anime original apparently. Extremely rare, almost non-existent, Studio Pierrot W. My favorite arc was the Chapter Black Arc. Yu Yu Hakusho had been building on to good arcs. The first arc was okay. It was just to establish the plot. The Dark Tournament arc was just meh for the most part. It had irritating tropes that I greatly disliked. The butt monkey, the person that never loses, etc. Though the plot twist around that arc made me really respect it. It was a great twist that restructured the entire plot of the show. The brilliance of great evil made compelling with romance. I don't give AF what anyone says, I found the romance of Sakyo to be cute. I don't know... I like it... Chapter Black followed after the Dark Tournament, and it was the peak of Yu Yu Hakusho. I enjoyed the characters and the intelligence needed to win the fights. I liked the strategy that they had to use. I also enjoyed how it flipped a few things as well, regarding the villains. Togashi is brilliant at making you hate a person, and then changing your mind about them. You seriously go from wanting to see a villain getting beaten, to wanting to see them win. It was brillaint.
Unfortunately... Chapter Black was the Peak. The Three Kings arc was OBVIOUSLY rushed. It's as if Togashi got tired of it. I did read about him getting frustrated that he couldn't do what he wanted to do, which is why he ended it "like a coward". His words, not mine. I understand his frustration and why he ended it, but it still doesn't excuse this mess of an arc. I will say that there is SOME brilliance in the arc, but it was overshadowed by how repetitive and bad it was. I'll never forgive Togashi for the ending, which is responsible for the current trash state of heteronormative romance in Shonen to this very day.
With that said, I do recommend this anime. It's not bad. It's actually above average. Though uh... Just skip to the last episode after you finish the Chapter Black Saga.

This season was better than the first season in some ways, but also a lot worse. It drug out needless drama, and it got annoying at times. It had some very cute and wholesome moments. Those moments don't make up for the tediousness of the other episodes. Plus, the side cast felt like props during this season. Like, they were just there to lift up the main cast. Though I do think this season was more fun, and a lot funnier.
I recommend watching both seasons. They were definitely worth it. Though forewarning, this season will
...
FRUSTRATE you and stress you out.

I think it's a cute anime, and I do recommend it. The biggest issue with this anime is that it allowed others to influence it, but it didn't do much with them. What do I mean by that? Well, it's as if the author read other manga that had heavy subject matter. It's like she read them and thought, "[The MC] deserves better! :( I want her in a wholesome manga!" So she added the heavy subject matter, but she treated them lightly. One example is when this anime tackled abuse. Nothing was really done other than
...
a simple break up, and it wasn't talked about at all after that. Take in mind, the abuse got physical, and the girl had a bruise. Yet, no one seemed to really care. You can't treat that subject matter so lightly, and brush it under the bridge.
Another example is the MC herself. Ostracization and bullying are topics with her, but even that's lightly brushed over and turned more wholesome. The MC is just a positive ball of light, and that's never really explained. Granted, some people do react to bad things happening to them by trying to be an over positive ball of sunshine for other people. Though that isn't really touched upon here. The thing is, when you're doing heavy topics, you have to get uncomfortable with it. You really have to dig in, because that's the relatable thing that people deal with. If you don't want anything heavy in your manga, then that's totally fine! Just don't touch upon it, if you're not willing to go there.
Though other than those complaints, the anime itself was pretty good. I enjoyed the romance and comradery amongst the cast. I do like how they tried to help each other and to even cheer each other up. I love how they encouraged people to cry and let it out, instead of suppressing their feelings because "they don't want to bring anyone else's mood down". The messy triangle situation that got resolved in a healthy way. Like, the person was way older and obviously didn't like the person, but I do admire how the younger person was able to move on with their crush in a healthy way. They talked it out with their friends, they cried about it, but they ultimately accepted the realization that they're simply too young for their crush.
I recommend this anime for a cute little slice of life romance.

I really like this manga. The premise is simple enough. Najika, the main character, was depressed due to the death of her parents, when she was a kid. A boy gives her some flan to cheer her up, which works! She calls him her Flan Prince, and that kickstarts her passion for cooking, baking specifically. She hones her craft to get into a prestigious cooking academy, in order to meet her Flan Prince.
I will say that the plot is simple enough, and this manga is full of cliches. You have the parent who hates the love interest of their
...
kid, you have the love triangle, you have girls bullying the main character over a guy, etc. I'd say the strength of this manga is similar to the strength of Black Clover, in that how it approaches the cliches is refreshing. I also like how a crush isn't the end all and be all. No one is pining over someone forever and whining over a rejection. Similar to real life, people move on, and accept that their crush doesn't return their feelings. I think that's a great message to have!
Even if the manga is rather cute and has a simple premise, it doesn't shy away from serious topics. Eating disorders, death, and suicide are topics that appear in this manga, and it takes them serious. That's actually what bumps this from a 6/10 to an 8/10.

The anime was fine. It was boring, but fine. I didn't really expect the most complex plot line, since most people who watch this anime are watching for the fashion. Let's be honest here. Though would it kill them to actually try?! *sigh*
So the premise of this anime is that the main character is obsessed with jellyfish. Well, that's not all. Her mom tells her that girls will grow up to be princesses and blah blah blah. The problem is, the main character doesn't feel like a princess, since she doesn't upkeep her appearance. So she
...
stays with other socially recluse women, and they all avoid 'TEH STYLUSH!!!' people. Their worlds will be turned upside down by a stylish cross-dressing man named Kuranosuke, who insists on hanging out with them.
The problem is, the characters are very one dimensional. They're extremely one note and have the depth of a puddle. They have an obsession, and that's their entire personality. Now, I can SOMEWHAT relate, because when I REALLY like something, I tend to hyper fixate on it. Though even with my issues of hyper fixation, I don't make something my entire personality. And I can't imagine suffering from social anxiety to the point of being afraid of people and freezing when a good looking and well dressed person looks at me. I mean, I do suffer from bouts of depression and get weird moments of anxiety, so I isolate myself. Though that period of extreme depression, to the point of isolation, usually doesn't last longer than two weeks. Though relatable side, I've seen socially awkward people. I worked at a sandwich shop, and I've met a few customers that were so socially awkward that they could barely even order food. That's actually sad... Which almost makes you want to emphasize with these characters. Except, they're all obnoxious and unlikable. Well, not all! Mostly just the one with the afro and Mayaya. Unfortunately, they get a lot of screen time for some reason, and so we're stuck with them. Outside of the group of socially awkward girls, we have Kuranosuke's older brother and Inari. The issue is, they're unlikable as well. Shuu, Kura's older brother, seemed to be set up to have a romance with Tsukimi, except... They abandon that romance to have a plot point with Shuu and Inari, that's trifling AF. It's very nasty and very foul, and it's just not funny.
Speaking of romance. Kuranosuke x Tsukimi is being set up, but it's just not good... They should've kept it as platonic. Shuu and Inari's plot line was so annoying that I was just waiting for it to end, but it just kept going. Like, why???
Though aside from the characters being boring and the romance being a flop, it was somewhat funny at times. The fashion did deliver, which was nice. If you're really into fashion and don't care about boring and one-note characters, then this is for you. Though if you want characters to have an actual personality, then look elsewhere. If you want actual good romance, and not flop romances, then look elsewhere.

How does one fumble a 10/10 Masterpiece, into a 7/10 (being generous)? Well... Do like this manga.
This manga is almost like Rose of Versailles, but in a high school setting. Some of the characters even look like the people from Rose of Versailles. It even touches upon classism and has a revolution. It brilliantly does so in a high school sorority setting to touch on more issues. The issues of bullying, the issues of wanting to fit in, the issues of classism, etc. It goes even deeper into the feelings of abandonment and jealousy. It does these
...
issues so well, and maintains an air of mystery. Though if I had to say what this anime was like, I'd say it was like that one Wendy Williams meme. You know the one where it's all smokey and a silhouette, and then next to it is a picture of Wendy Williams. It has the words "When you finally unlock that character that looks sick AF but then you see how it really looks". That's this anime is a nutshell. It's like the mystery of the characters was very intriguing. You're invested in it, and it's so interesting. The friendships along with the fall outs and the craziness of the girls. The anger, the happiness, wholesome moments, and scary moments. Some episodes where like a thriller horror movie, and some of them actually disturb you. Though once you strip away the mystery and figure out what it truly is, then it's like "wait, it's THIS! THIS is the conclusion???" That's what Oniisama e... does. It's like it's afraid to just go there. They bait and switch so hard, but then they're afraid to go through with it. That's ultimately what frustrated me about this. It's like they wanted to deconstruct Shoujo, but then the ending was ultimately a bland Shoujo. And there's a way to deconstruct something while implying a normal ending. Princess Tutu did very well. They deconstructed fairy tales and flipped the ending, but then they implied that it would end up being very similar to another fairy tale that's already been written. They do it brilliantly by having their own take on it, and even then changing a few roles (but ultimately the same thing). This doesn't do so at all. It deconstructs Shoujo and has something interesting, and then they start feeding you the bland food that was the ending. Seriously, wtf was that?
This was actually more insulting than the worst Shonen. You watch this thinking that the women have power, only to realize that the major movers and shakers were all men. They were rather dull men that honestly should've stayed in the background. The anime started to suck when those men were pushed at the forefront. Like congratulations, you ruined your product to push these bland AF characters. I hope it was worth it...
Though outside of the bland characters, most of the main cast was interesting. Especially Mariko. She was a very charismatic and complex character, and there wasn't a dull moment around her. She just sucked you into her world, so when she was feeling sad and depressed, she just brought you in. You feel sympathy for her, but she can also make you laugh. You cheer her on with her bold decisions, and ultimately root for her (while also recognizing that she's emotionally manipulative AF, and is obviously unhinged). The main character goes through so much character development along with her best friend. Even the 'villains' are humanized and ultimately said to not be bad people. That's something that I personally like, because it shows that everyone isn't always a villain or just plain evil. Everyone has some redeemable qualities and some good in them. I really wish the show had just stuck with them instead of adding bland characters that just throw off the balance and chemistry.

It definitely shows its age. It also drags the anime out unnecessarily. I'd say the best thing to do is just to read the manga. I'd only recommend to watch this if you're really into the history of this anime. Like the history of the anime that influenced Shoujo anime, including the masterpiece, Rose of Versailles. Personally, I'm into the history of this anime and can respect it, but I don't know if I respect it enough to slog through 48 more episodes... Especially when the characters are fairly simple, and it's just a mashup of fairy tales.
...
I do respect the take on gender, which is why I rated the manga a 6/10. I do get that it was very progressive back in the day. Though aside from being a respectable feminist work of art, it's just not all that enjoyable.

This manga wasn't all that good if I'm being honest. It actually drug on at points and got annoying. Though I'm rating it a 6/10 because I do respect it. I respect that it influenced a lot of Shoujo, including the masterpiece, Rose of Versailles. It does well to talk of gender, and it puts women in a great light. Well, sort of... It does show women as strong and having multiple types of interests and personalities. Though it also shows them as jealous and love crazy at times. Ultimately, it's a great representation because it's diverse.
...
I'd say its take on gender and how it influenced a lot of Shoujo after it is what boosts it up. When you take that away, it's a rather boring story. It's clearly inspired by Disney and other fairy tales. Though it feels like a mashup of them at times. Once again, I do have to respect this manga for the influence it had, but it just wasn't all that as a work of art. It's a 5/10 manga that's boosted to a 6/10, due to the influence it has on others.
