Both Space Dandy and Outlaw Star have great animation, humor, and characters. Each takes place in a distinct, immense universe where space travel is of the norm and humans and other lifeforms reside among the various worlds within. But most importantly, both anime have a strong sense identity and purpose, and that purpose is to both enjoy themselves and entertain their audiences in the process. True, the methods can differ from time to time, but in the end, both want the same thing: to just have fun. And while both can get pretty silly, that's not to say they aren't without a somber moment here or there. But even when they do decide to get serious, they're very careful about when to act as such, and never stay that way for longer than absolutely necessary. They do each provide some depth and do possess continuity (once again, each in their own way), but the deeper tones are subtle and neither anime punishes those who don't pick up on those themes or watch the episodes out of order, be they casual viewers or dedicated otaku. If you're a fan of great animation, humor, science fiction, or a combination of all three, both Outlaw Star and Space Dandy are definitely worth checking out.
