Fate/stay night Movie: Heaven's Feel - III. Spring Song (Anime) add

DON'T MISUNDERSTAND ME THIS FILM IS GREAT AND I LOVE HOW IT EXPANDS ON THE VISUAL NOVEL IN THE TINIEST DETAILS ---

The entire trilogy is just WAY WAY lacking of content. The entire point of the heaven's feel route is for us to finally stop idealizing the concept of <Hero of Justice> Emiya Shirou was cursed to bear. That he actually deserves to live amongst humans despite being the only one who lived the Great Fire = and to move on from his survivor's guilt. The visual novel is the perfect way to convey this aspect of the plot because in that ... medium you get to spend a huge chunk of your time doing all of the mundane things with Sakura and Illya - the two anchors of normal life Emiya Shirou has (alongside Fuji-nee of course). However, because of time constraints movie have - the trilogy can only fit in as much plot-relevant details as they could so it sacrificed this aspect of the visual novel. It is an understandable and inevitable decision because it is a consequence of medium difference therefore storytelling is different. But it is important for the appreciation of Emiya Shirou as a character. The first film ended with an anxious note of whether Emiya should give up on becoming one and the visual novel actually tackled this aspect of his character far better than the films ever did - it all felt rushed and tucked away to "the development happened behind the scenes". To be fair. the anime still managed to convey well the relationship of Sakura and Shirou which is important to the plot and supplemented their past really well, but it was done so at the expense of Shirou and Illya bonding. IMHO, the entire point of the route was it was Illya and Sakura's route combined - and for Illya, not because she's the love interest, but because she was the only relative Shirou has left. Illyasviel is a major part of what makes Heaven's Feel work as a narrative masterpiece in the visual novel and I just dislike how she didn't feel as important in here as she did in the novel.

This trilogy managed to convey one of the most dramatically-intriguing part of Fate Stay Night. It did the visual novel justice and the music and animation expanded a lot on the underlying tone the visual novel had and lacked. The masterfully blended music with its striking visuals managed to create a spectacle to the audience without undermining the story as a whole. The only flaw this trilogy has is you have to have knowledge of the previous routes through watching the previous adaptations of Fate Stay Night and if you're only seeing this it's hard to appreciate some aspects of the characters here. The visual novel has always been made to complement the story through its progressive routes which are made to view in order (Fate to UBW to HF). If you're going to watch the trilogy without at least watching UBW, you will not appreciate this film and I think that's the reason it doesn't stand as a good stand alone anime trilogy in my opinion. To compare it to another well-known trilogy - you don't need to watch Bakemonogatari to appreciate Kizumonogatari. I think that sense of independence is what distinguishes a trilogy film from great to masterpiece and if that wasn't here this trilogy films would've been a masterpiece. Overall, these films still hold weight and will remain as one of the most visually-entertaining piece of media from our generation.

Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan - Tsuioku-hen (Anime) add

Trust & Betrayal captures the horrors and grief of the Bakumatsu period from the perspective of a child; if the child in question, was thrown into the adult world and became infamous in the process. This movie perfectly reveals Kenshin's past, motivations, and the atrocities he's committed. It also didn't hold back from the violence of war and killings.
This film is perhaps better than the entirety of the anime - not because the time period here was more eventful than the Meiji period, but it has to do with the fact that this film does not romanticize the concept of a Manslayer like the anime ... does. In this film, you see for yourself how violent and wrong the ways of the samurai were and how all it lead to was more deaths than necessary. They spouted how all of those killing will lead to a change and it perfectly mimics reality's view on wars and sacrifices - the pointlessness and despair of it all in the eyes of one lonely soldier. But it's not just that, it shows us the beauty of the mundane more than the anime ever did. The anime is 60% showing normal life while romanticizing Kenshin's manslayer; which leads to people watching the anime purely for its actions and violence part which undermines the point the anime is trying to convey. In this movie however, we actually see for ourselves as we feel that Kenshin is so much better living a mundane farmers' life with Tomoe. We don't just hear it, we appreciate it because we've seen what Kenshin has been through. I think that was a huge aspect of his character the anime was missing and the transition of tone from this film to the anime undermines the value of his character for me.
Secondly, Tomoe is one of if not the best part of this film - she fulfilled a lot of roles for Kenshin that was absent in all his life. Not just a lover - she was a part of his family. Perhaps his home, even. The betrayal from Tomoe hits hard because she's the first person Kenshin ever loved and during the chaotic times - that was precious.
Lastly, as much as I love the 5-Movie Live Action Adaptation (featuring Takeru Satoh) of Rurouni Kenshin, their relationship in this film truly leaves something to the audience that reaches the heart better than its live action adaptation ever does. It's hard to convince audience to watch this film after watching "The Beginning" because a huge chunk of it is just the same - but IMHO, Tomoe's character and motives is more vivid here than in the film and that has a huge thematic significance to the film as a whole. Her entire purpose is to learn forgiveness and to move on from the cycle of violence - not to seek revenge. I don't think it translated all that well in "The Beginning" film because the lack of Tomoe's perspective in that film made her motives feel weak and made her character feel like her motives waver easily. It just feels like she's a woman who fell in love because of Stockholm syndrome and trauma bonding than actually falling in love with Kenshin for who he truly is - a kind and innocent young man forced to wield the blade. But that's just my opinion, regardless of whether you agree with me or not - check this film out regardless.

Fuuto Tantei is about The Narumi Detective Agency run by Akiko, Shotaro, and Philip. It takes place after the series finale (along with the movies) of Kamen Rider W. It's a pseudo-sequel of that beloved series. To answer the short question of "Do I have to watch Kamen Rider W to watch this?" the answer would be no. This 12-episode anime made it so that the characters are reintroduced properly so that old fans and new watchers will appreciate them and the plot at hand. There are certain callbacks and references to the plot in Kamen Rider W but most of it is just subtle ...
