Subversive, hilarious, and underrated.

This manga is a parody of the hero story. If you read any of them, you know the premise and setting. You have a hero exploring the world and defeating the "villain" to save the world. However, at nearly every point, it undercuts the tropes and mocks expectations.

The main character is weak and nobody takes monsters or the legends seriously. The hero's companion is actually the "villain." The story questions the morality of the "hero story" while still being light-hearted and funny. Maybe some tropes are overdone like the prevent.

The manga's premise is "gross" as my sister puts it and the author wonderfully writes around it. The writing treats the relationship between thought and perspectives. The theme of longing for the past underlines the story. From the manager's longing of love, the main character's longing of running, to her friend's longing of their past relationship. Manga gracefully returns to the message that you can't hold on to the past.

The art is whole another thing to rave about. It's beautiful and poetic when it needs to be. Scenes in the rain cover the entire page and characters occupying a fraction of it. It conveys the ...

I enjoyed this manga a lot more than I thought I would. At first glance, you might dismiss this as furry junk. However, the characters here make the story engaging. It's great to watch the main character discover modern Tokyo with such wonder and positivity.

One very unique aspect of the manga is that you are learning with the main character. As a Western reader, I am as familiar with Tokyo as the main character. I genuinely learn new things about Japan like a tourist. There are little bulbs of texts on the side of the pages that drive the sense of exploring Tokyo.
