Depravity, madness, the human mind and flesh decaying and becoming nothing, a living hell, a life of sadness...

If you give the girls in each series a lugubrious backstory and fetishize them completely and you have two very similar works. The narratives in each are somewhat action based, but ultimately neither feel too far away from being just another Elfen Lied clone ten years too late.

Akame ga Kill!

Shounen series with overbearingly comedic character designs and archetypal characters that are often misconstrued as brooding, dark, and realistic due to the "mature themes" like death in them

Sekai Seifuku: Bouryaku no Zvezda

Mixing surreal settings with quirky comedy Jinrui and Zvezda attain a mystical atmosphere. Strong female leads help keep these otherwise nonsensical shows afloat.

Humanization through the use of ambiguity and comedy, with many jokes involving miscommunication and the power of words tl;dr DEEP

To be honest, even if you were a fan of FLCL you wouldn't like this. The similarities including over the top nonsense to the extent in which it's hard to tell what exactly is going on; more so for Kyousogiga than FLCL though.

Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai.
add

Most of the ToraDora! staff returns to make AnoHana. With a similar comedic yet melancholic feel to every episode and the effect of seeing noticeably alike character designs, you can't go too far into either series without noticing that the other shares analogous characteristics. ToraDora! is for those who prefer realistic and well-paced drama while AnoHana holds true for the opposite.

I bet you love watching the same anime twice, right? Right. I bet you love watching the same anime twice, except the second anime is 11 episodes shorter and even more poorly written right? Right. I bet you  when a studio releases the same anime under the title of another, waters it down, and deconstructs the already poorly crafted characters they had to begin with to create more profit with minimum effort right? RIGHT. If you hate one series, then be prepared because you'll hate the other too! The cliches and uncreative writing will be sure to impress you to a new level of rage. How does J.C. manage to keep churning out the same anime? Just... how?

The lighthearted settings contain many surprisingly dark aspects. Another commonality is the dystopic world as seen from the perspective of a small European-esque landscape.

Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin
add

While Glass Mask, a shoujo, may come off as an odd recommendation to such a brutal anime as RAINBOW, each of the two have impressive story-telling and ethical qualities. The protagonists in each series suffer traumatic hardships, but through these hardships they learn to hope to make the best of their situations and continue struggling toward their goals.

Kuuchuu Buranko
add

Wonderfully, these two anime capture your attention from the start. The protagonists of the series dually act as minor and major roles in the "episodic" storyline. The two protagonists from Bartender and Trapeze tend to deal with peoples social troubles and help them solve them through strangely fitting and often intriguing ways. The anime Bartender is more serious, while Trapeze cracks jokes to enhance the psychedelic mood. If you're contemplating on watching these and are led astray by the art or concept, give either a try! If you enjoyed or are enjoying either, check the other one out - you won't be disappointed.
