The pseudo-intellectual version of SAO.
ReCreators or Rec is an poor attempt at an intellectual version of the typical "random guy gets transported into a virtual world" story.
You see, the "genius" of rec is that the twist involves inverting the roles and having the supernatural characters visiting our mundane world instead of the opposite. Pretty interesting, right?
Wrong.
The reason why these story's are made is because our world is boring. Inverting the traditional roles completely defeats the point of these narratives.

Ex: Dragon maid.
This anime has the same premise so therefore suffers from the same problems of REC. But there's a fundamental difference here, the rest of the plot is completely standard.
This is basically a "fish out of water" story with the sole purpose of creating a simple but pleasant moe comedy. In other words, no one is being pretentious.
It is what it is, a simple traditional story (that you have seen plenty of times) with a slight twist to add flavor. It never tries to be anything more.
And that's where Rec falls flat on it's face.
It tries so hard to invert the formula that it forgets why the formula worked in the fist place.
It's basically amateur hour, where the writers forget the most basic story telling principles for the sake of being "different".
Here you have (inexplicably) one the most abhorrent anime tropes of all time, in the form of a protagonist that is nothing but a beta, useless, wuss of a straight male. He's everything that made you hate Shinji Ikari but worse.
He will be completely inconsequential to the plot for almost the entirety of the show.
Then you have the supernatural characters. People that enter an alien world and 5 seconds latter not only already know everything that is to know about it, but also, explain to the inhabitants of said world (and the useless protagonist), what's going to happen in the next episode.
This type of absurdity makes it almost impossible to relate to the characters. It also doesn't help that most of these characters sound, look and act completely ridiculous. This in a show with very little humor and zero sense of self awareness.
Did i forgot to mention this anime only has enough plot for 12 episodes, despite being much longer?
That the plot only moves forward more than an inch, every 5 episodes?
And that most episodes involve the "good guys" talking and staring at each other for 15 minutes straight?
That the "plot" is completely nonsensical?
That there is (literally) a moment in the anime, where:
- a stereotypical evil character gets introduced
- only to be ignored by the good guys
- despite the fact they know the character is evil
- and the fact they know this evil character has killed people
- but still ignore her/him
- and then get super surprised when this stereotypical evil character, sterotypically kills one of their friends
- and act like this was unpredictable and there was no way to prevent it.
Did i forgot to mention that?
The best part of this train wreck is to show that you can't fix a problem just by trowing money at it. You need talented people that have a freaking clue of what they're doing.
Despite the high production values and great animation that comes with it, this is a very mediocre show. And one that exemplifies why we like to hate SAO.
Because while it's too "safe" and predictable, it doesn't stop it from being super effective as an entertainment product. Something that Rec fails to be.

This show should be called: I can't believe how cute my little sister is.
Not just because it is a copy-paste of oreimo but also because there's nothing more to the experience. If you like to watch moe shows with adorable teenage girls despite a multitude of shortcomings, this might be the anime for you. But if you want dept you're out of luck.
There really isn't anything more to it. There's no plot, just a series of randoms events. There's no characters, just a bunch of vessels for poor fan-service and even the "protagonist" is your classical bland/glorified avatar, whose sole purpose is to move the

plot forward.
So in conclusion it truly is as bad as a lot of people say it is. Now it's not a 1/10 simply because the animation is pretty decent and the soundtrack is effective. Therefore i give it a 4 out of 10.
PS: This show is an obvious cash grab, pandering nonsense for lolicons and no one else. So i completely understand the 1/10 scores.

Hai to Gensou no Grimgar is yet another story of teenagers trapped in a virtual world but it's really not what you expect.
Story: 4
The premise of this anime is basically the same as Sword art online, except with the twist that the story revolves around the characters and little more.
If you want a detailed virtual world with a deep lore and gameplay mechanics you are not going to find it here. Hai to Gensou no Grimgar or just Grimgar to make it easier it's a anime devoid of any interest in telling you a compelling story outside of it's characters struggles. The world is not

developed at all and even the reason as why these people find themselves in this world is not explained in any way. Instead you get writers that are completely happy in just ignoring the entire premise of the story and going as far telling the viewer that every single character as an extremely plot convenient amnesia, just because they were too lazy to write their backstory.
To add insult to injury none of this virtual world mechanics or rules are explained. You will hear characters talking about "levels" but there's no experience points, stats or even a leveling up system of any kind. You hear characters talking about buying ability's but you never see what learning a new ability actually looks like, everything is done off camera.
This makes for a very confusing first episodes, since you don't know if the writers simply forgot these people are supposed to be in a virtual rpg game. It also makes it hard to care for the characters when you don't even know who's a actual person trapped in this world and who is an AI controlled NPC.
But the bad things continue to pile up in the form of intrusive and pointless fan-service. In the same moment the anime it's trying to convey the harsh reality of being poor in a unfamiliar world you also get constant boob references, sexual innuendo and most of all extremely attractive and healthy looking females that are supposed to be depressed and malnourished. It goes to the point of writers putting so much emphasis in the fact characters only have old clothes and armor because they're poor, only to show the same characters in shinning armor and pristine outfits 5 seconds latter.
The show also has terribly predictable moments where a certain character dies just to move the plot forward and absolutely slow as molasses pacing. If you though just 12 episodes would make the anime have a very snappy pace, think again.
Art: 8
Probably the best part of the show. It's detailed, fluid and the backgrounds look absolutely lovely. The only drawback is lack of diversity as the story repeats the same locations over and over again.
Sound: 6
No complaints here other that the soundtrack was forgettable for me.
Character: 8
Another high point of the show and what is it's redeeming quality in my opinion. Even if predictable and filled with annoying fan-service, the struggle of these characters made me continue to watch the show until the end. They're believable and all of them look and sound like individuals without being caricatures.
Enjoyment: 6
It was hard to enjoy this anime for the reasons i wrote above. There's just too much unnecessary things and not enough explanation of what the hell is going on with these people and this world.
Overall: 6
The best part about Grimgar has to be the fact that it gives a new twist of what has become a new and already stagnant genre of anime. It's just too bad that that twist is not enough to make it a compelling experience overall.

Akame ga Kill is the anime definition of a guilty pleasure.
Story: 3
The story in this show is little more than a premise. There's an evil and corrupt empire fighting rebel forces, and the protagonist ends up fighting for said rebels.
It is actually less interesting than you might expect because very little effort was put into explaining the world and what makes these too sides different. Instead, you get the classical Disney treatment where you have an 99'9% evil empire on one side and a 99.9% good rebel forces on the other.

comedy though and through. Expect over the top action scenes sprayed with abundant gushes of blood, where eccentric characters explain their absurdly powerful ability's before performing any action. In the middle of all this, there a constant stream of silly jokes and in your face fan-service.
So to explain it in simple terms, most of what happens in Akame ga Kill is completely absurd. And that absurdity has to perceived as part of the fun since in my experience, that was the only way to enjoy the show.
But if the story in this anime excels in the "dumb but fun" department, it completely fails every time it tries to be serious.
Just like The walking Dead and Game of Thrones, Akame ga Kill has no problem in killing it's characters, but it does it in the most incompetent and painfully obvious way possible.
Many times characters are introduced only to be killed after a few episodes in a completely formulaic way.
Character appears, talks about their backstory and then dies from the most plot convenient reason possible.
In the end it becomes nothing more than a gimmick that completely retracts from the overall experience.
Art: 8
The art in this is for the most part very good. As a show with a lot of action, the animation rarely failed in it's fluidity and while the drawing don't have amazing detail, they were very consistent, be it the characters or the environments.
Sound: 5
The soundtrack was effective but completely forgettable. When it comes to the VA cast i have nothing negative to point out.
Characters: 7
The only way to make an anime such as this work is to have a likeable group of characters, and Akame ga Kill nails this aspect. Sure they are for the most part anime clichés that you have seen a million times before, but nevertheless they were all unique and all had different reason as to why they were fighting.
Enjoyment: 6
I really enjoyed the first 15 or so episodes of the show, I liked the silly humor and the character interactions. On the other hand, a certain gimmick involving killing characters in a pretentious and incompetent way, completely erased my enjoyment of the last few episodes.
Conclusion: 6
Akame ga Kill could have been one of the best examples of "dumb but fun" anime. But in the end only the high production values makes the show rise above mediocrity.
If you like shonen shows with a lot of comedy and fan-service, this is for you. If you are expecting a mature look on the cruel nature of war, don't bother.

One Punch Man, if you thought Dragon Ball and One Piece were too intellectual this is the show for you.
Story: 2
The story or lack thereof is about Saitama, a very average looking bald man that for some reason (which is never explained) can defeat the most powerful enemies with just one punch. Throughout the 12 episodes the show will present the viewer countless nonsensical situations, where Saitama needs to defeat very powerful beings obsessed with destroying things. But since the hero can kill anything with just one punch, it completely negates any sense of tension or struggle.

to believe that this would be a parody of the super power shonen genre, 95% of all comedy bits fall completely flat. Just because a joke can be amusing once that doesn't mean it will be funny for the next 11 episodes.

By far the best part, the art in this show is actually pretty decent, especially the fighting scenes.
The drawings have a significant amount of detail and the animation is fluid.
But that's where the art "pro's" end.
During fight scenes there's a lot of shaky cam and most of them involve a gigantic amount of destruction right from the first episodes. This means the anime quickly becomes visually repetitive and annoying. And when it comes to the comedy bits it don't fare much better.
When the show tries to be funny (and fails) the art goes from the very simplistic to the very detailed. But because the jokes don't work most of the time, it ends up looking lazy and pointless.
A more visual consistent representation would work much better.
Sound: 5
I can't remember a single track from the score so i have to say it's forgettable, but since i also didn't find it to be annoying enough to remember that can only be a good thing.
When it comes to the voice over i have nothing negative to say and i think most actors did a good job.

In a story where the main hero is invincible what role does the other heroes play?
None, they are completely irrelevant.
While i found some characters compelling (much more than Saitama) they serve no purpose other than to fill the enormous void that is the pathetic story. They have strengths and weaknesses and character flaws, but all that is pointless when their struggles are met with a invincible hero that can't die.
It really is too bad, since i they would be interesting characters in any other shonen story.

I'm glad to say that this show is slightly more amusing than watching grass grow, or maybe not i can't tell anymore.

One Punch Man has to be one of the most fascinating social experiments in anime form i have ever seen. It truly is the living proof, that you can turn a unbelievable mediocre show into a success, as long as you cater to the lowest common denominator.
But despite how incredibly dumb and lackluster it is, i can still recommend this show for the lovers of the brainless super power shonen genre.
Just keep in mind that if all you want is senseless explosions and destruction there are much better alternatives out there.

Shokugeki no Souma is the story of a teenager pursuing his ambition of becoming one of the best chef's in the world.
Story/Plot: 7
Being a show about food you could expect something very different from mainstream anime,but it exactly the opposite.
Shokugeki no Souma is by every account an mainstream show for all the good and bad. Despite the complexity of the dishes and the meticulous preparation they need, the show is very open and an actual interest in culinary is not necessary to enjoy it.
When it comes to the plot and without spoiling it, it revolves around an impossibly demanding school of culinary that fails 90%
...
of it's students.
It's basically a little bit of hell's kitchen in anime form but with a lot of comedy. That comedy comes from the colorful cast of characters but specially from the fact there's a lot of food tasting and a lot of resulting orgasm (not kidding) from tasting that food.
This leads to hilarious segments of people having their metaphorical clothes explode from the sheer pleasure the food is giving them. This is also where a lot of the fan-service in the show is exploited to make these situations even more bizarre and humorous.
Speaking of fan-service, there's a lot of it, some good and some bad.
The good part is that it's very inclusive in a way there's something for everyone and like i said before it's used to provide comic-relief with great effect.
The bad part is that it's also used as one of the oldest and cheapest tricks in anime history, which is, giving certain female characters extra "personality" in the form of water-melon size breasts. Making them a literal talking pair of boobs.
I wish the author gave them an actual personality and character development instead of something as lazy as this. Fortunately not all female characters suffer from this strange syndrome.
Characters: 8
Despite some classical anime stereotypes and overuse of fan-service, the cast of characters is rich and diverse. Giving the show a good amount of different perspectives on cooking and what it means to be a chef.
The show also managed to make characters stand on their own despite many of them gravitating around the protagonist.
As most of them have a specialty when it comes to types of foods and methods of cooking, it makes latter episodes where there's a lot of cooking competitions much more compelling.
Art/Animation: 8
Shokugeki no Souma has for the most part very solid production values. Characters look unique in terms of design, and the animation is consistent, especially in the orgasm skits when the author's creativity is put to the test and there's a lot of nudity/absurdity.
Sound/soundtrack: 7
While not amazing, Shokugeki no Souma has some catchy tunes that complement well the action and gave me a sense of excitement.
For the sound effects and VA's, everything was pretty solid.
Enjoyment: 8
This has been one of my favorite shows of the year. From the production values, to the art and the fact the show has amazing pacing (no filler episodes) made this a very enjoyable experience.
It's just too bad there's simply too much brainless fan-service.
Overall score/Conclusion: 8
It's easy to recommend this anime to mostly anyone that likes comedy and slightly more mature shonen shows. Despite it's problems, I'm definitely exited for the next season.

Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu is a sort of spin-off to the very successful Suzumiya Haruhi series.
Iit revolves around a shy girl called Nagato and her quest to win the love of the guy she likes named Kyon.
Story/Plot: 5
This anime is supposed to be an "what if" scenario to contrast with the original series in a way that now you see the events from a different character perspective.
And that's where it fails completely.
Not only is the main character not interesting in the least, the show works as an shameless fanservice to the gullible fans of the franchise by reusing situations and scenarios straight from the
...
other works. But even more than that, there's almost no twists to the story whatsoever, almost every situation in the show was already exploited in the original story but with a much better execution and especially with better writing.
Therefore almost every plot device and character struggle in the show was ripped straight from the original work and given a simple make-over.
Characters: 5
Another big problem with this anime is the fact there's no protagonist. Nagato the main character is very weak in terms of personality so the story balances around various different characters never making a statement of whose story are we actually watching.
Even worse, Nagato barely has any character development. From the first episode to the last she is exactly the same person, the very shy girl in the beginning is the exact same very shy girl by the end.
But is not just Nagato that suffers from lack of development, despite the diverse and rich cast of characters absolutely no one in the show is developed in any significant way. The cast of characters that were previously so compelling and witty (especially Kyon) are now a poor shadow of their former selves.
Sound/Soundtrack: 6
No problem in terms in terms of sound effects as everything sounded fine but the soundtrack on the other hand is very unremarkable, although it reuses some tunes from the previous anime to give a sense of familiarity.
Art/Animation: 6
The art is different than the previous installments and for the worse in my opinion. While there's nothing particularly bad about it, it made some characters completely different from before and made others look generic.
But besides that both the art and the animation looked fine and competent.
Enjoyment: 6
While i somewhat enjoyed the show, especially the humor, it's hard not to compare it to the previous works that were to me much more compelling in every single way.
Overall Score/ Conclusion: 5
It's hard to recommend this show, if it existed by itself it would be a perfectly fine experience.
But since it just feels like a mediocre fan-service to milk the fans of the franchise my advice is to adjust your expectations.

Berserk
- A tale about a man and his sword
Story: 8

The story of berserk is centered, around Gatsu , a man equipped with a massive sword and his humongous strength. Destined to live a life of battle, and constant struggle.Gatsu discovers from young age, , that he can only trust his sword, and must fight everyday, just to stay alive.
From boy to adult, Berserk shows Gatsu's life though countless battles, as he grows from a simple mercenary to one of the most powerful and feared knights of the land.
Being a mature manga to the core,you can expect the world of Berserk to revolve around violence/gore, primal instincts, existentialism, faith, relationships, despair, loss, life, death and everything in between. These elements are constantly being used to give depth to the story and characters, resulting in dark and gritty plot.
For the most part, this is a good thing, the problem is that Berserk, tends to overuse some elements, that in my opinion don't enrich the plot or the overall experience, with the main two being rape and torture.
Somehow the author is a big fan of these and really likes to overused them. while in some cases they make sense, in others i couldn't help but feel annoyed to see the same character being a victim of rape for the seventh time, or every bad guy torturing random people .
Fortunately, despite all the violence, Berserk has a good amount of comic relief, offering some really silly humor that give a nice contrast, to the darker scenes.
Characters: 9
One of the things, that you can say about Berserk's characters, is how "real" they feel, and even though the story is set in a alternative historic setting, is hard not to relate to them in one way or another.
One of the reasons for this, is that besides Berserk's large cast, every character acts and looks differently, being instantly recognizable just after a few pages.And although some characters are weaker than others, they all share the author's attention to detail, having their own inner struggles and back stories.
In fact, most of them are given a little "screen time" to show what happened to them up to that point of the story, giving the reader insight over their motivations and personality .
And in my opinion this is one of the problems of such a large cast of characters, while for some readers, the back story information might be a nice touch by the author, to others that just want to follow the story of the main characters, is just to much information in what is sometimes a very convoluted plot, with so many things happening at the same time.
Art: 10
Berserk art is in my opinion simply one of the most detailed and impressive out there. Not very manga can reach Berserk's art quality in terms of fight sequences, violence/gore, to character faces, clothes, weapons and backgrounds, everything is drawn to almost perfection.
If there's one manga that deserves a 10/10 in terms of art, is definitely Berserk.
Enjoyment: 8
I could have enjoyed Berserk, a little bit more if it wasn't for the plot getting so convoluted at times, or the over repetitive rape scenes, other than that the action and the fate of the characters keeps bringing me back to this manga, even though it takes forever for new chapters to be released.

- interesting story, with complex characters
- great character development
- mature plot with lots of violence and gore
- great comedy bits(comic relief)
Cons:
- convoluted plot
- overuse of certain violent scenes, such as rape, torture, etc.

Gantz
- A story about a horny teenager.
Upon reading the first pages of this manga, many people would consider Gantz's story, to be a simple and straightforward one. A tale about Kurono Kei, a horny teenager, that is selfish, self centered and obsessed with sex, and big breasted women.
That is until he dies, gets revived, and forced to partake in a alien killing death match, with futuristic suits and weapons. From that point on the reader starts to understand that Gantz story is nothing but straightforward.

One of the things that i like the most in manga, it's how a story is focused on it's key elements, but still offers something for everyone. And Gantz does just that, while you could read just for the action scenes, which are great, Gantz is much more than mindless fights.
In fact if someone were to ask what exactly is Gantz, a complete answer would be something like : it's a Psychological, survival-horror, action/gore, seinen, etchi, drama, slice of life, Sci-Fi, Supernatural, romance story. And Gantz really is all that
While might be confusing at first, Hiroya Oku does a great job at putting more and more elements to the story, at a comfortable pace, giving you a feeling that it's continually growing, but without breaking immersion.
That growth means that you keep getting more and more hooked into the story and the fate of it's many characters.
In fact if there's a "but" to Gantz story, it's how it normally gives you a question and answers with another question, almost like watching a episode of "Lost".By the end of several volumes, you still won't know what exactly is Gantz, who's that guy inside it, why it can revive people, why does it make people fight aliens, where the hell those aliens came from and why are they in Tokyo.
In the end, Gantz, is about survival. How people behave and react in extreme situations, and their ability to continue to live their lives and build "normal" relationships, despite all the death and destruction they have to endure in every hunt.
Characters: 8
One of the things that set's Gantz apart from other manga, it's how almost every single characters dies, and that no one is safe in the world of Gantz not even the main characters.
This element means that you never know who's going to die, so having good characters that will not easily be forgotten, becomes very important. And in that aspect Oku delivers, while not perfect, every character have completely different personalities, and personal dramas behind them, always giving them a sense of purpose and importance.
While some characters are just despicable, other are simply psychopaths, while some live only to fight, other live only to rape, and so on. Of course there is the good and pure characters, but Oku's specialty really is with extreme deviant behavior.
In general the cast of characters, is complex and diverse, which is great, the main problem is that some secondary characters that get sent to Gantz, always come from the same formula of psychopaths, sadists and rapists. In fact most of the people in the world of Gantz are very negative, cruel and evil. While it does show how many people really are in reality, sometimes it seems Oku does it simply as a gimmick.
Another minor thing that bothered me, it's how some characters almost look the same, similar faces with only slightly different hair, while others look completely different, which can make for confusing scenes.
Art: 9
The art in Gantz is very detailed, with great action scenes, while it might not compete with, berserk or kuroshia ichi, it's still very good.
In fact if there's a problem with Gantz art is that Oku uses CGI, in almost everything, from characters to scenarios, to the weapons, the suits, and the special abilities of the aliens. All of this is made with or with the help of CGI, so Gantz art really is a double edge sword, for the most part i like it, and it doesn't bother me. But for some other elements, i would have preferred a more "classical" approach, since some times it's just to much CGI in just one scene.
Fan Service: 9
Even thou Gantz is mainly more drama, than exactly comedy, it does have comic reliefs, normaly in simple and dry dark comedy, involving either sadistic killings or as in most of the time sex. That's right, Gantz has a lot of fan service, and when i say a lot, i mean that almost every chapter comes with some hot, nude, big breasted young woman, doing sexy poses.
Which normally is fun and serves, to lighten the more chaotic and violent scenes, the problem is that sometimes is just too much and can get silly.
To give you an idea, 9 out of every 10 women in Gantz not also are hot, they all share the huge breasts gene, and sooner or later you will see them naked and having sex with someone.
So you might think that, hot women and sex is great Fan-service . There is, until you see a guy having sex with an alien in a middle of a battlefield while his friends are getting killed.
And finally ,to show you that Oku really takes his Fan-service seriously,as he realized he was upsetting the lolicon's , Oku made a lolita as a main character, and of course she will appear naked and have her very own sex scenes.
XD (lol)
Enjoyment: 9
In a word, "addictive", not many manga kept me , devouring every chapter and volume, until there was no more to read. Having read 31 volumes in 2 days, not also means that a have a lot of free time, it also means that Gantz became one of my favorite maga in just two days.
If there's one thing that made my enjoyment a 9 instead of a 10, was that Oku's along with other seinen,/gore manga authors overuses certain elements, like extreme violence/gore, sex and rape just for shock value, or silly fan-service, which after awhile can becomes almost routine,
Apart from that, Gantz is overall a great experience, that delivers in almost every aspect.

- A psychological comedy/drama
The first time i watched this show, i have to admit i didn't know what to expect.
Having being used to see the positive aspects of being an otaku in anime and not exactly all the negative, this show took me by surprise, showing a completely different side of how otaku and hikikomori life really is like.
For people that don't know, the hikikomori trend is becoming quite problematic in japan, with people that live years closed in their rooms.
And being somewhat of a nerd myself, it was hard not to relate to this story and see parts of myself
...
in some characters.
STORY: 9
- As you may already know, this story is centered around a 22 year old, hikikomori, by the name of Tatsuhiro Sato that suffers from a severe case of agoraphobia, and social anxiety, therefore he can't leave his house, unless he really needs too.
As the story progresses, Sato will meet all kinds of people that in one way or another will shape is character, and try desperately to help him to stop being a hikikomori.
From learning the hard way , the good and the bad of being an otaku, to having to deal with suicidal tendencies. Sato's journey makes for a harsh and interesting story, that strongly accentuates on compulsive behavior and the importance of human relations.
Leaving the viewer always wondering if Sato will be able leave is hikikomori ways and reclaim is normal life, is one of the shows best premises, and one that kept me glued to the story.
Characters: 9
-One of the good things about the characters is that, each and everyone of them is damaged, with their own set of flaws and obsessions, that contrast greatly with Sato. From extreme otaku's, to stalkers or people obsessed with conspiracy theory's. This show really explores all kinds of different personalities, and people that for some reason feel alienated from society.
Although sometimes they can be annoying, most of the characters feel unique and are all well designed
Sound: 8
On the sound department, every VA does a good job, and as always some voices may be hard to tolerate depending on your taste, i personally had no problem with the VA's on this anime.
On the soundtrack side of things, while not being memorable , the music in this show does complement the scenes in a good way, portraying the unique feeling of the show.
Art: 6
Art is by far the weakest aspect of this anime, while in most of the scenes the art and animation are good, using simple but effective drawings on the characters and detailed backgrounds. In some episodes the quality of the art and animation simply plummets into ridiculous levels , leaving you wondering if they ran out money in the middle of production or had a ridiculous tight schedule.
With that said, its a shame because it can be immersion breaking and its its the only major flaw, in what is a great anime.

I had a great time with this show, at first i was surprised simply because i was expecting something more similar to Genshiken which I'm a fan, and got a completely different take on otaku and in this case hikikomori life. The story, the characters all felt unique and different from everything else i have experienced in anime, which along with the art and the music made for a good experience. Too bad the art and animation inconsistency in some episodes somewhat crippled my experience as a whole, but overall i still had a great time
