After watching season 1, I thought that this was just going to be an average school romance show.
Season 2 not only outperformed my expectations, but elevated my view of the romance genre. In other words, this show went from good to PEAK romance.
Some of you reading this may be thinking: "It's just another show of a shy loner kid getting with the outgoing popular girl. What makes this show so different? Why does it have this high of a rating on MAL?"
The answer is simple: They perfected the trope.
It is clear that from the characters, the writer, the animators, and
...
everyone else involved that they devoted their hearts to a high quality show and story.
The first few episodes of season 1 were very strange, I felt a bit uncomfortable watching it. The Japanese version of the "quiet kid" wants to kill the popular girl in school. After episode 4 of the first season, it had only gotten better. This season only got better from where they left off. The animation, the soundtrack, and the writing for season 2 is also really good.
What stood out the most to me was the emotional maturity and character development for both of the main characters. Ichikawa in this season starts to break out from his shell of loner mentality and allows her and his friends to change him for the better. His constant growth in each episode compared to Season 1 is a massive payoff as you can't help but to root for him. Yamada, also is not just there to build up Kyotaro. She truly cares for others and grows to learn more about him and in turn, learns more about herself.
Another thing that makes a great show is its side characters. Whenever most of them are involved, they make their mark with the short time they have on screen. Kana, Kyotaro's sister, is a perfect example of a sister who truly cares for his brother without being too clingy. Kyotaro's friend Adachi is the comedic relief of the show and says the craziest things which lead to funny situations. Moeko, Yamada's friend, is the ultimate wingman for both Kyotaro and Yamada. She always backs them up but also likes to tease with them. Many other characters in the show are great in some way where there's not one you can really hate and are well written themselves.
Giving a 10/10 for a show is not something I take lightly. A show that's a 10 has to be a true masterpiece and this season alone is that. It made me a fan of this series where I couldn't wait to see the next episode every week.
It is truly as advertised: A literal Danger to My Heart.

The way I would describe Pet Girl of Sakurasou would be a show that flew high, but got too close to the sun and fell off. Its aspirations are what led to the show from being a really good romcom to an outcome that left a lot more to be desired.
The main issue is that as a person who wanted to watch a romance anime, it seemed I was lied to. This was not a romance anime, this was a below average drama.
The thing about it was for the first half of the show, it was very good and showed a promising direction with all
...
of its characters. The soundtrack was good, the storyline and plot was solid, and the characters and their interactions with each other were very well written which gave me a reason to support them. However, around episode 18, the show as a whole started to take a different turn.
The MC Sorata Kanda is supposed to be the "normal" kid when he is condemned to move into a hall of chaotic students. However, he is the very standard clueless character with not a lot to show for. They try to demonstrate his growth and development as a person but he gets over that halfway through and doesn't do much after that. Mashiro Shiina, the art prodigy transfer student with a love for drawing manga is the opposite of Sorata. I believe she was not utilized enough in the show and was one of the solid characters. Her social ineptitude makes her rely heavily on others but she slowly becomes more aware socially and emotionally. Ryuunoskue Akasaka a shut in computer genius who is one unique character. He is not very prevalent in the beginning and comes off as bit harsh and rude, but he goes through the most change of anyone else in the end. Nanami Aoyama is a character I loved but grew to hate at the same time. She's a person that anyone would look up to. She's an aspiring voice actor, a hard worker and since the beginning of the show, has a crush on Sorata. I hate the way the show dealt with her. If I said any more it would be spoilers but her reasons for why she did what she did throughout the show made no sense to me. There's a whole side romance between childhood friends Misaki Kamiigusa and Jin Mitaka which was 10 times better than the main romance. Jin was the average helpful but distant friend to Sorata while Misaki was the classic comedic relief character. The comedy in the show was good at first but quickly disappeared.
The whole "romance" aspect of this show seems like the rug was pulled out from under us. The first half of the show focused on Sorata and Mashiro and their relationship. It looked like it was being built into a good romance which the second half would develop further into a heartwarming story. After that, it would be completely abandoned until the last 2 episodes. This made the end and its "peak" a lot less satisfying. The last episodes felt like it turned into a shitty Hallmark show where the ending was very predictable, somehow all their problems conveniently disappeared, and that the secret to solve everything was through the "power of friendship". I felt like I had been lied to which made me very disappointed.
In the end, I know that for many this would still be a solid show to watch. In my opinion, it was a genuinely great show until the last 6 episodes. However, as good as it was before, sometimes it takes a really bad ending to ruin a good story and its characters.

Out of curiosity, I've wanted to see The Classroom of the Elite for a while, and I was not disappointed. In a simple setting, it shows the lives of students who are in the top school of Japan where the future elites of society are forged. Each grade is divided and ranked into Classes A to D. The main character Kiyotaka Ayanokoji, a stoic and unemotional secret genius in Class D who is trying to work and manipulate his way up to the top of the school. The animation and soundtrack were ok, but the characters and story are where it is really at. Especially
...
when we are seeing society through the eyes of Ayanokoji.
The school is shown as its own utopia funded by the government, but in reality, it is a brutal Hobbesian world where the ends justify the means and distrust is everywhere. Almost every character is hiding a part of themselves which piqued my interest. It is a clever show with constant plot twists which makes you really think and anticipate what will happen next.
As a high school anime, the only issue would be because of its abundance of characters, there is little to no focus on understanding some of the other background characters especially in Class D. Also because of it being 12 episodes, I think there were some parts of the show where there was more opportunity to build the plot or characters that were missed.
Overall, I really enjoyed this show. It will be interesting to see how the show builds on a creative plot and how it will play out.
