Synopsis

Meet Kageno, the super dull, glasses-wearing, short first year high school girl. She has no friends and envies people who are enjoying their youth. Meet Mitsunaga Youta, the most popular, handsome guy in school. Girls constantly confesses their love to him, but he has no plans of dating anyone. After a string of events, he decides to ask Kageno to be his fake girlfriend for a month in order to stop the girls from confessing to him in exchange for his friendship. How will Kageno face all the ordeal that is about to come.

This is the beginning of a love comedy between the school idol and the negative girl.

Before I review this, I assume you've read the other review with the score of 1 that says it's a terrible manga for anyone who has self-esteem/anxiety/etc issues. I will not disagree that the female MC Kageno often gets saved by male MC Mitsunaga in various instances- but I will have to disagree that all there is to his character is a knight in shining armour popular guy. I was pleasantly surprised, when I originally thought he was exactly that type of character but then I realized he was a mix between a tolerant and a no-nonsense guy when it came to dealing with people ... around him. When Kageno is clumsy or gets into situations she can't solve herself, he helps her out, but in situations like worrying about changing classes or studying he will be reasonable and correct her/be strict with her accordingly rather than pamper her with sweet words (kind of like dealing with kids...) (If I may, a mild spoiler is when he tells her "...do you enjoy making me help you that much?" suggesting that while he for the most part accepts and helps her he also has some level of disapproval for her actions where relevant - which they will later talk through and find their satisfactory conclusion for) Most importantly, we get instances where he's not all-accepting and actually shows that he has behaviours he is not okay with, which made me appreciate his character more.

The problem lies however in how often these situations occur. The one thing you need to know before you read this manga is that it is not realistic. There will be bullies and bitchy characters (which may or may not be realistic), but that aside there are truly other unrealistic and physics defying situations as well. Even for an unrealistic manga (it does add to the humour often though), Kageno has her clumsyness turned up to the maximum which can be seen as annoying, and throw in the bullies and I can see why some might think she always needs saving, even though there are some instances where things don't go that way. Even so, I don't think the manga necessarily promotes it as a relationship between a useless, reliant girl and a pampering guy, but rather one where the guy is patient but also properly nudges her to deal with things properly, and a girl that has certain issues (in addition to her social ineptness, her common sense is a little...) but tries in her own way to make things work despite not having the same common sense of a normal person.

The humour is decent - and gets quite funny as the series progresses. The manga has nonrealistic situations often, or quite a number of them that are cliche or makes one think it is too much of a coincidence - however often these are done humorously and not taken too seriously, and most issues are resolved in a chapter or two. There might be serious plotlines in the future, but for the most part it is best enjoyed if you treat the happenings as small incidents in a couple's life and not take it too seriously.

Finally, I'll end off by saying that everyone's tolerance level for characters is different and you may be less accepting of certain things in this manga. Main negatives to look out for is a socially inept girl (this isn't the manga if you want a serious take on self-discovery/overcoming social issues), bullies for stupid reasons, and unrealistic/silly situations and overly clumsy girl (this is pretty extreme and can be annoying or cute depending on you). Positives are humour, easy to read without much investment, straightforward guy and general quick resolution when issues pop up - thus less drawn out frustration.
Overall, enjoyable and pretty typical read but nothing special. All in all, do adjust expectations - you will probably know quickly if this is your kind of manga in the first few chapters

Mixed Feelings

This was really... unsatisfying.

Overall a pretty typical shoujo romance between a bishonen and a complete outsider, much like many other stories in that way (like Kimi ni Todoke for example). However, what makes this story so much worse than most others for me was the fact that the female lead basically did not change, at all. In her core, she is a likeable character, deeply caring about others and accepting basically any risk to help them. But at the same time, she has a self-esteem of absolute zero, to the point of that she constantly doubts her relationship and thus also the feelings her ...

Incredibly shallow story how an unpopular girl with no friends gets #1 Ikemen for no reason other than being a decent person.

The plot honestly just felt like the author made a checklist of Shoujo Ai tropes and went down the list checking them off as she wrote them into the story.
