Koe no Katachi

Bullying, guilt and redemption.

Bullying is a taboo subject matter in fiction. Even more so when it is the main character of the series him/herself either doing something that is perceived as bullying or just outright bullying another person. No-one wants to make their lead characters unlikable and hurt their sales, after all. And there can be few more distasteful acts than ejaculating on a girl's clothes (Onani) or abusing a disabled girl (Katachi)!

The true similarity between these two is how their respective anti-social leads go on 'crime & punishment' paths of redemption after doing despicable things. They both find themselves being bullied in a sort of karmic response to their own actions and eventually grow after the guilt sinks in; culminating in romance. It is an interesting brand of characterisation where the lead characters are broken before being re-built into something more than they were originally.  read more

Koe is one of the most similar mangas to Onani in terms of how some people can change. How bad events create a better version of yourself. 

In both mangas there is a lot of bullying going on. Main characters look similar. Both are growing up stories, that can get quite dark at times. If you liked one, definitely give the other a try.

I'm surprised no one has suggested this before. Both are dramatic school life stories that can get pretty "heavy" at times. Both main male characters at one point in the story feel intense antisocial tendencies and despise the people around them, both of them intentionally harm others emotionally and commit other kinds of misdeeds that in turn end up leading to painful consequences. Both feature a bullied misfit girl as the female lead.

Both series contain a big amount of character development, with clear emphasis on redemption. Both deal with the difficulties of dealing with the consequences of your sins, with bullying, isolation and depression.

Taking place in a regular school setting, you'll find the story of both of these series to be quite irregular when it comes to characters and their circumstances. The main male protagonist are anti-social and has few friends. However, their encounter with a girl changes their life changes forever. Throughout both series, they struggle to deal with their own problems and consequences. A road of redemption and heavy character development awaits for those who are interested in both of these series.

Both MC's start off with big flaws and questions, uncaring/shunning people around them.
Through hard lessons and punishments, both pave a path to redemption and grow as a person.

Similar in many themes, I find onanie master kurosawa the more mature/seinen version of koe no katachi,
using more explicit topics to portray the same ideas.

Both main characters undergo a treacherous path to redemption through the help of other major characters (who have their own issues to manage) and their own introspection. They take place in a school setting and bulling is a prominent theme in both manga.

The inciting incidents are also quite similar; the MC's encounter a girl at school that pushes the story forward. They can be both humourous sometimes, however, Onani's humour leans more towards dark comedy whereas Katachi's humour is more lighthearted and cute.

Both manga deal with mental illness (depression), loss and suicide. More than just boy-meets-girl romance. Though the story lines are quite different, the general themes mentioned before are there. Both are great reads.

2 male characters with personal problems, both mangas dealing with serious issues (suicide and bullying)

There is a similar - not exact, but similar feeling both mangas evoke. Koe no Katachi has a serious tone with light touches and fluffy scenes, and a sense of redemption/changing oneself, while Orange has an overall a lovely and adorable aura at the beginning and grows more and more serious, while stacking up suspense all the while.

Both produce great, overwhelming feels. 

Both have adorable couples.

Both have amazing art that seems like eye candy at first, but becomes meaningful and heartrending later on. Both mangas have a style that is able to communicate across with facial expressions. read more

Both series deal with serious issues such as suicide. They both make your heart ache with sadness, but at the same time the story is so beautiful it makes you tear up with joy.

These stories are so sad but so beautiful and touching.

If you loved the characters in Koe No Katachi and if they gave you the feels throughout the whole reading then I would say give Orange a chance do the same thing. I won't go into depth about the story because I would basically be telling what the descriptions says, just know that I enjoyed it and I cried a lot.

Both Orange and A Silent Voice are dramas, though Orange has romance playing a more prominent role than A Silent Voice did.

These series both had a stong emphasis on mental health and the importance of friendship.  Both series had at least one main character who was isolated, but ended up making friends. Characters in both grapple with their own self-loathing and better themselves. The theme of finding something to live for is also present in both Orange and A Silent Voice.

Yubisaki to Renren addpermalink

These manga are two very different approach's to the same story. The budding romance between a boy and a deaf girl. Koe no Katachi takes a slightly darker theme tackling a lot of serious problems like bullying and suicide. On the other hand, Yubisaki to Renren is much more light hearted and focusing on the romance between the ML and FL. These are both amazing manga that I cannot recommend enough!!

These mangas have deep "inner thoughts" that brings in the tears, drama and lesson for all the readers. Koe no Katachi focuses more on the issue of bullying while Real focuses on the perspectives of being disabled. Even though the main topic is different, both share the same real life issues like insecurities and judgement, being left by your 'friends', finding a purpose in life, and the list goes on.

If you read Koe no Katachi you might find LIFE to be similar.   LIFE is a completed mature shoujo that is about extreme bullying, so the bullying in it goes beyond what is shown in Koe no Katachi and it is more violent and there is no real reason for it.    It has less redemption for the bully as she said she chooses her victims just because it is fun for her and truly is more psychotic and yandere than just a bully.  But if you are looking for other mangas to read about bullying you might give it a try, it is by the mangaka of Vitamin which is also about bullying,  but don't expect these to have a bully who turns around like in Koe no Katachi, LIFE is much darker and more mature.   The heroines of both though are nice girls that keep going and have good character.   read more

A boy has dedicated his life to meeting a girl from his elementary school once again. He is full of despair, thoughts of suicide, and thinks his life is going nowhere. The difference is that in Punpun, the two got along as kids whereas in Koe no Katachi, they were "enemies." They are both full of romantic dramas about people growing up and becoming more and more mature. Punpun is very heavy on the psychological aspect and is much more mature than Koe no Katachi, but KnK also has some of those aspects as well.

Face with bullying, violence, self hatred, mistakes, etc... multiple characters walk their way around the MC and find themselves. With lovely hints of romance, family love, pains and joy. Realistic characters and art. Suavely painful.

Both MC's have regrets of being bullies when they were younger and try to come into terms on how they can be a better person. Both Mc's are also start out with a wall out protecting themselves from others before coming to see that there are some people out there that are worth trusting. Both have coming of age kind of feel.

Both series involve people with disabilities and struggles through society. Both also involve parents who struggle for their children. Only difference is that one involves autism (With the Light) and the other involves deafness (A Silent Voice). There is also more bullying in ASV than in WTL. Also the mother in the former series is more strict and cynical while the mother in the latter series is more kind, supportive and idealistic. That being said, ASL is more depressing than WTL.

3-gatsu no Lion addpermalink

Portrayed with heavy characterization and a realistic life story, both 3-gatsu no Lion and  Koe no Katachi can be a highly enjoyable read for any reader. Their story invests in human emotions as we see how much the main characters change. There is concrete relationship focus that brings out their personalities. And above all, they stick with their themes without going off track. While their premise aren't similar, the main protagonist experiences loneliness until they meet certain other characters. 3-gatsu no Lion has the additional game element of shogi while Koe no Katachi often explores the inner thoughts of the main characters.

They may not have exactly the same premise but they communicate a similar message involving the content of their stories. The main characters from both series are ostracized by their peers. Yet, they try to earn their respect and throughout the series are met with mixed results. They form an unique bond with another prominent character in the series that develops over time as their lives intertwine and exploring new possibilities.

The setting of both series are familiar in a school life environment where drama ensures.

The protagonists deal with trauma from grade school. They both were once bullies that eventually got shunned by their classmates. Years have passed and they are now in high school, and they have since closed themselves completely from others. They also have suicidal thoughts at the very start of the stories. Contact is eventually made between the former bully and bullied.

Both manga have people realizing that there is something missing in their lives.  Both main characters find someone they want to meet again.  Both have drama with Koe being much more heavy in the department.  Both stories involve children/teens making trouble for others around them at some point.  Both series had their anime movies air in the same year, and both manga are inferior to their movie counterparts, in my opinion, anyway.

Honestly they may not be as similar as I’ve Made them out to be in my head but whatever, they both ‘romances’ but the romance isn’t really important like in a way it is of course. They both take place in high school with two characters who knew eachother when they where younger who haven’t really spoken in a while and they meet again, in a silent voices case they become friends for the first time and in blue flags case they become friends again, they both have a lot to say about the world and the people inside of it and they both made me sob hysterically. read more

Koe no Katachi gives some of the same vibes as Kaoru Hana wa Rin to Saku. So if you enjoyed Koe no katachi then you will most likely enjoy Kaoru Hana wa Rin to Saku.

As a quick note: The drama in both is also decently similar to one and another, with the whole looks like an asswhole but really isn't.

Both "I heat the sunspot" and "A silent voice" stories dealing with someone who cant hear. 
In Koe no Katachi, however, Shouko is completely deaf but Kohei from I hear the sunspot is only partially deaf. Another similarity is that both stories have a character that changes themselves or their lives for the sake of another ( Taichi/Shoya).

Bullying is the common theme here - both feature a mc boy who bullies a girl and then meets her years later and tries to make up.       The attitudes of the girls are very different, initially at least, in their reactions to what happened to them in the past, so they have a different tone, and the art styles are quite different from each other as well.   Can a bully change?   Can a victim forgive?   Can enemies become friends or lovers?   Maybe yes, maybe no.     Also, the meeting in Koe no Katachi is in high school, while it is in university in Kimi no Sei, so the situations and age groups are different.   read more

"She freaks me out" is something that both main characters in different series say at first when they get to know the heroine. Later that "hate" will turn into something else.. perhaps - that's for you to find out. Also in both series the main heroine doesn't use her voice to speak but they use other "language" instead. Sign language or via playing games. 
In that terms the series have similar vibe that you might like as well!

Both main protagonists have a very damaged and scared past which leads to them becoming anti social and being isolated from the world. Both manga's show the struggles and consciences the lead characters go through trying to erase the past they established. The two stories get really dark so much so that both main characters care little about their own life, not thinking things through to the end of dangerous situations. Both manga's share drama, Psychological genre elements.

The two Male leads have a very dreadful childhood, which prompts the main character to become isolated and anti social. Both manga's show the up's and down's of the characters in the story, facing a lot of drama between close companions. Both narratives show amazing character development, seeing how they get there acceptance and assurance back by learning from previous mistakes. Both manga's have Drama, and Psychological genre components.

While it may not be apparent at first, then overall feel of both these works can be compared in many ways.

First of all both these manga aim for a fully real setting and story. Both feature heavy drama and relationship struggle, with emphasis on the character's way of dealing with these obstacles.

In both you find a main male and female protagonist who struggle with some aspect of their life, and you also get a smaller but meaningful insight on the rest of the cast's struggles.

Overall if you enjoy real and relatable settings, with a good dose of drama, i recommend you check both of these out.

Not entirely sure how to describe it, but both series have very similar energy. Both protagonists make mistakes in their youth and try to reconnect with childhood friends. They also both resign themselves to a life of misery only to meet someone that breathes new life into their lives.

The 4th story of Mohiro Kitoh's Short Stories and Koe no Katachi have incredibly similar plots. They are both psychological stories about a young boy who bullies a girl that has become the target of the class for different circumnstances. In both stories the situation is then reversed and the boy is betrayed by his friends and becomes a target of the bullying himself while the girl reaches out to help him. In both the main character ends up mentally growing up as a result of the girl and the events' influence.

Both involve themes of learning how to communicate and understand others. Both have a girl who was bullied/mistreated by their peers. Both have a slow building relationship between a boy and a girl as well as them building strong relationships with friends. Koe no Katachi is a lot darker in tone and the main character's outlook is pessimistic while Kimi ni Todoke is more lighthearted with an optimistic main character. Both will probably make you cry a little bit.

Communication problems depicted in two ways:
- in Koe no Katachi: deaf girl getting bullied by MC with redemption arc (serious, deals with mental illness)
- in Komi: Komi is afraid to speak (not mute) and MC tries to befirend her, thus making her open up more to others (very light-hearted, wholesome; focus on comedy + romance)

Both have problems making friends because of their conditions. 
I like to see Komi-san wa Comyushou desu as what Koe no Katachi would be like, if the MC had tried to know and understand her better by befriending her slowly, instead of bullying her lol
