I recall my initial thoughts on Dengeki Daisy as I first came across its information page: Another overrated shoujo manga with a simple plot and the cliche catch phrase "I'll protect you".

Where have I read this line? Wait. Let me think.

Oh right, from oodles of shoujo mangas I read. I remembered dropping a lot because they were a lot too similar to each other. It just differs from the art to its supporting characters and leads. There’re a lot of arcs being used over and over and over again. Hotsprings, going on field trips, getting locked in a gym storage room and whatnot.

Of course, Dengeki Daisy springs out the cliché plots at its peak.

As another fan of the shoujo genre, I am once again amused on how Motomi Kyousuke handles ... his way of manga clichés. I never imagined myself loving another shoujo manga to this point. And to add up to that, the author is male. A he, making a shoujo manga that gets a high popularity, now this is something.

So what makes it differ from the others?

Is it the art?

The art is dramatic and humorous often times. Fully detailed, from emotions to bony structures. One thing I noticed was the eyes for every character describes what they are. For instance, Teru’s eyes. They were set to kill. It helps her give the impression of a strong and honest girl. For Kurosaki’s, his eyes gives off the mysterious and arrogant feel. Not that it isn’t cliché, but it gives the characters a sense of individuality.

Is it the storyline?

It follows a story of Teru, a smart girl who lives alone with a cellphone as a memento from her late older brother and Kurosaki, some weird janitor slash programmer who is actually in imminent danger of having his head bald. Joking aside, the cellphone serves as a communication device between Teru and an unknown guy who he calls himself as DAISY. Teru finds him as her security blanket and often emails him on what is going on with her everyday life. Kurosaki, however comes up and treats her as a servant because Teru, as we all know, is poor. She agrees to be his servant to pay off a debt. The story goes on and eventually, this two, seems closer than before. So at the end of reading a short sneakpeak, you end up questioning yourself, who is DAISY? What happens to Teru and Kurosaki?

Dengeki Daisy is actually easy to predict, at first. But then, when you are at the point of making sure that this event is going to happen, it surprises you with another blast, and this is what makes the story interesting.

Is it the humor? The drama?

There’s always a page or two that you can’t help but laugh. A dramatic or romantic scene abruptly shifts to a comical scene makes it double the laughs. It just pops out when you least expected it. I avoid comparing a manga from another but for Dengeki Daisy, in terms of comedy is one of the best I have read. It feels all natural and not too much of a trying hard.

Dengeki Daisy clearly defines what the word drama means. Its emotionality and depth makes the characters more realistic and melodramatic. Though I say it is dramatic, it can be more of mysteric.

Motomi’s good sense of humor and drama makes every chapter healthy in a theoretical sense. He knows what shoujo manga fans look for and he blends it amazingly well together.

Taking a quick look of another shoujo manga wouldn’t hurt, why not give it a try for a change? You’ll never really know unless you give one. You might end up getting bald if you don’t.

The art is really detailed. en kurosaki is just hot. Motomi Kyousuke is a really nice drawer. The art has it own style, if you see it, you know that Motomi Kyousuke is the drawer, because al of his characters in al of his manga's are the same, and that means. really much hotties^^

Let me start with what I loved the most about this manga. (And this is going to be a long list...)

1. Characters.

There's no place for a Mary Sue (or Gary Stu) in Dengeki Daisy. No one is perfect. You cannot just use a blanket descriptor like "kind" or "sweet" for any of them.

Especially the two main characters, Teru and Kurosaki. Dear lord, these two. They're real people - when you finish the manga, you feel like you've known them forever. You understand the things that worry them, the things that make them happy, the things that MAKE them. Their past, their feelings, everything defines and ...

I first heard of it when it began being scanlated (is that a word??) and the summary made me scoff. "I will always protect you.."? What kind of crap is that? Even though I don't usually read Shoujo, after going back to Kaichou wa Maid-sama, I found this Dengeki Daisy. I thought 'since they are similar why not try it?'

I didn't regret my choice at all, because I do love this manga. I've just recently started, and in just a few hours, I can't stop reading, I've cried MORE than just "a couple times," but I've also laughed, actually laugh.

At chapter 3, I felt this should not exceed 20 chapters. At Chapter 27, I've dropped it. Please. I can't stand cringiness for 50 more chapters, no way.
Honestly, when people are giving rave reviews on this, it feels like they had only read sooo many bad manga that this was a saviour to them. Please, save yourself from wasting your time.

A good shoujo manga, no matter if it's full of cliched situations or tropes, is nuanced. NUANCED. It is the tiny details, the reactions, the expressions and the analogies that give the characters a body, a persona. There's no ounce of the meaning 'nuance' ... in this. Everything is just blatantly open and put out there. Then again, it was a manga that was expected to end in a few chapters but kept getting revived, so at every chapter, it feels like the end is close, but just because the mangaka got more pages to fill, she was forced to drag on the story.

While Dengeki Daisy surely wants to move away from those cliched high school semester activities and have adults in the mix of protagonists, it takes the route of programmers and hackers (and dare I say even gardening), but all of it is very very amateur. Terms like registry, defrag, proxy are all just thrown in to make it appear technical and complex. Every so-called mystery situation is so blatantly obvious, and immediately given away - there's no good build up. It's like the mangaka thought, "Oh, I want to draw a shoujo romance, but let's give it a mystery turn - ah! Let's spice it up with a hacker hero!" And obviously there has to be some trauma because of course, hacking/cracking is illegal - you don't want to influence kids the wrong way. I mean, sure, use it as a setting. Sure, there's no need for technical accuracy and detail (and honestly, I no longer know what was possible in 2013 as opposed to 2018, but surely it was much more than that). But if you've introduced a plot device which requires intelligence and strategy, be intelligent and strategic about it and rise up to it. This manga surely could not. A loooooot of the situations were just soooo convenient just to give the characters a reason to come together or say something.

When the meaning of the name "Daisy" was revealed - I actually thought - WHOOOAAA - just what does that imply?? And I saw a whole different scenario pop up that diverted this from a shoujo to a seinen thriller. But nooooo... they killed that intensity right at the end of the same chapter with the characters' immaturity. Alas, it remained a shoujo. Just because it was being published in Betsukomi? Who knows.

The characters are as flat as the flat chested female lead, and you can predict that it will never grow. The bad guys are good guys gone awry, or just plain dumb who take their sweet time, the good characters just have so much trust to spare they want to donate it, and of course trauma and guilt needs to be slow-burnt in. The side characters are just there to fill in space, and not actually give support. 90% of the humour is not humourous. Ugh. It just became cringy. While I am 5% happy that Teru, the female lead, is a bit proactive, she still becomes a damsel in distress - not the usual type, but still yes. I can already see she'll heading towards having a saviour complex soon.

At 27 chapters, I don't feel any closeness to the characters. They are not growing on me. I am not excited to find out more about them. The guilt/trauma that's being built up, I don't care about that because I feel like the character is just whining.

I'm just tired.

Here I'll recommend reading cute shorts like 'Nanairo Sekai' or the much more rooted 'Seishun Kouryakuhon', the more nuanced love-tug-drama of 'Hirunaka no Ryuusei', 'Taiyou no Ie', or an actual debate on guilt and moral in the nuanced and intense 'Bones of an Invisible Person' that leaves you feeling something instead of empty.

This is something that you can expect more out of a shoujo manga. Not only the storyline is really interesting that is very attracting, it makes you want more of this manga. If you are the kind that hates crying and irritating female leads, expect none from this manga! *Time to rejoice*
The female lead (Teru) is a very very strong girl and has a very likable character, I really like her.

This is not your typical romance story where the two male and female leads get together in the first few chapters. There's more to it; that can make you happy, and sad. ...

Why? It's original. A hacker protecting a girl...and all around it are story developments in both the past and future. Not every manga I've read has the same quality of intriguing development in BOTH past and future. It's hard to do that, but I believe Dengeki Daisy has done that fairly well.

After seeing that quite a lot of fellow readers have already written its review, I was doubting whether I should also participate in this race? Then I thought, does it really matter if I write one or not? It's not like anyone going to notice this in the heap of "great" and "popular" reviews. So, let's begin it...

It was quite hell of a ride for me, personally. You may ask, why? Because my friend, I have a soft spot for slice of life manga whether it is shoujo or josei or shounen in a broader terms. And this manga has somewhat of everything in it. ... It has a little bit sci-fi (mostly coding related stuff which I somewhat understood >_<), a little bit of slice of life, a little bit of shoujo (well, most of the times, it was a parody of shoujo...I will explain it in later part), a little bit of age-gap (age-gap of 8 years...uh-huh, my parents have 7-years of age-gap between them o_o) and lots of learning for a lifetime, at least for me personally.

Now, I'm going to talk about its each ingredient in detail. So bear with me... >_<
This manga is full of coding jargon...I wish I had an engineering or science background to tell whatever was written in the story if it was correct? But who cares, right? As long as it is not complicating the story or making it blend, it is alright. Well, this is the exact case with Dengeki Daisy. The science fiction parts doesn't hinder the story at all. The story moves at its own pace. You won't be rushed here. So, read it with a patient and calm mind. Okay? ^_^
Coming onto the shoujo aspect of it...I think it is quite different, in a good way, from you ideal shoujo manga. Here, the each character act as you and me. It means they are imperfect (mostly) and perfect (rarely) in their own way. They have their shortcomings and downfalls as well as they have their strengths. No one is ideal here. They make you realize that there is no ideal way to convey your feelings to your beloved ones...like there is no ideal way write down this review ^O^. Each character has their grey moments in the story. So, if you're someone who is idealistic shoujo manga reader, beware!!! because some moments or characters will repel you to keep reading it. Please start it with open-mindedness >_<!
Talking about its art-style, I would say I'm not qualified enough to pass my judgement on art-style. For me, personally, I feel it is drawn with mangaka's sweat and tears (I mean hard work :D) and I don't want to disrespect her work by giving my opinions naively. Honestly, I appreciate her time, effort and hard work that she had put into creating it.

Lastly, I would just say that if you're considering to give it a try then sure, go ahead but with open-mindedness. Thank you for patience with me and being with me till here. See you in new story. Until then, take care! \_^o^_/

Don't let the title or anything else fool you, this manga is not like anything else you have ever read before, its much, much better! Not only will the story make you want more and more, the art work is simply beautiful., Plus the heart warming relationship between Teru (Main) and Kurosaki (Main) I highly recommend this manga to anyone. One if the things i Love most is it not a manga thats just so gross you wanna puke. (so far, so good) Its also Super super funny! I recommend it to all ages and genders. :)

This story is purely original. I'm serious, after reading the first 10 chapters of DD, I dropped reading most of the flowery shoujo manga I had.

My reason? When you laugh, you laugh until your oxygen supplies run out. When you go all "Kya~!", you wake up your roommate or your neighbor.
