Manga: Zero no Shiniki
Other the premise is different, its similar in that people are forced to play a life or death game. Except here they are sort of in the real world, Lots of blood, gore and a twinge of affection between characters, If the unfinished shiniki left a sour taste in your mouth, this completed manga may just fill the void.

Manga: Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari
Just like SAO and some other series, mangas and novels, this 2 are about virtual reality online role playing, the lives of the protagonist in them and the dangers they have to face. The only difference is, Tate no Yuusha does not only show a more promising plot, until now, it has also been the most fun to read. It wouldn't amaze me to see this manga animated next year, and gaining the same amount of popularity as SAO.

Both series has the theme of science fiction where the main male protagonist meets a strange female beauty. From there, another world of science fiction is presented in which he "enters" a game. Both series features action, drama, some comedy, but also a mystery surrounding behind the scenes. Both series features shounen style battles where scores really do count.
