Critics & Connoisseurs was a club that was founded in 2008 and ended club activities on the 31st of 2022.

The goal of the club was to come up with a list of highly recommended quality shows and manga that are exemplary either within its genre or universally. A manga needed a 70% approval rate in our voting to get on the relation list. The following manga are all part of said list.
Do note that our club's main focus always was anime, our club's readership was relatively low which results in a lot of manga not being able to reach enough votes to get on the relation list despite having a 70% or higher approval rate.

A selection of titles from the gekiga scene, a short-lived yet influential artistic movement that flourished during the 1960s to the 1970s and maintains a prominent underground presence today. While mostly known as a pioneer of cinematic paneling and close attention to realism, it would be more accurate to consider gekiga as a counterculture. Surrealistic, autobiographical, and experimental works emerged as an alternative to the Tezuka school of aesthetics and paved the way for other artists to different modes of expression.

This is in NO WAY a comprehensive list and should be treated more as a starting point for diving into this movement. There are so many more important artists and titles in the scene that MAL unfortunately does not have entries for, and probably never will. Since I can't speak Japanese, there may also be some titles that I am unfamiliar with. The 50-title limit doesn't help either, but I hope this gets you started in this often-unexplored side of manga.

Note: Not all of these titles are available in English.
11/04/2022 Updated to include more underground artists.

A collection of great manga between 2 and 5 volumes that you can read in a single day !

The reason I have not included 1 volume manga is because I have made a separate stack for them : https://myanimelist.net/stacks/2090

List of manga/manhwas published by the Brazilian publisher Pipoca & Nanquim.

Note: Junji Ito's manga published by Pipoca & Nanquim follow the Japanese edition "Masterpiece Collection", which puts the author's main works in order. However, Myanimelist doesn't follow the same order, which makes selecting the correct mangas for the list very confusing. Therefore, only some of Ito's manga are listed, while the rest of the manga, along with other manga that are not available on the MAL website, will be described with the name used in the Masterpiece Collection.

Non listed on MyAnimeList:
➣ Dogs (Keum Suk Gendry-Kim) ➡︎ after "Yume no Hashibashi"
➣ Dassouhei no Iru - Masterpiece Collection 5 (Junji Itou) ➡︎ after "Panorama Toukitan"
➣ Umeku Haisuikan - Masterpiece Collection 8 (Junji Itou) ➡︎ after "Shin Kubidai Hikiukenin"
➣ Rojiura - Masterpiece Collection 6 (Junji Itou) ➡︎ after "Vampire"
➣ Bohyou no Machi - Masterpiece Collection 9 (Junji Itou) ➡︎ after "Kogarashi Monjirou"
➣ Kubi no Nai Choukoku - Masterpiece Collection 7 (Junuji Itou) ➡︎ after "Miyamoto Musashi"
➣ The Art of Junji Ito: Twisted Visions [art book] (Junji Itou) ➡︎ after "Genkai Shitai"
➣ Mugen no Shiro no Princess (Shintaro Kago) ➡︎ after "Battle Royale"
