Both protagonists stopped playing piano due to an accident. The romance and drama that happens in both titles bear similarities, meaning there will be "feels".

These novels feature a protagonist who is caring, gentle, and sentimental. The narrative is done in the first-person perspective, often mixed with the protagonist's inner thoughts and feelings. Both works contain a lot of humor, filling the characters' everyday life with colors. Just know that when the drama comes, it hits hard.

Sayonara Piano Sonata and Yesterday wo Utatte tells of a story with heavy characterization and relationship developments. In essence, the main female protagonist connects with the main male character although their progress is slow. Throughout their story, we learn much more about their personality, background, and roles. There's also evident romance that develops although the pacing doesn't pick up until later on. Both series adapts drama with a melancholic tone while maintaining a balance of comedy and realism. Sayonara Piano Sonata is also noticeable for its additional element of music.

Music plays a key role in developing the characters for both series. But even so, we also see the various character relationships that evolves as their story progresses. Piano no Mori and Sayonara Piano Sonata explores the experiences of youth for main characters who follows a dream. At its core, character growth becomes an important aspect. There is also a fine degree of realism in both series relating to every day life experiences as well.
