Both novels has mystery and supernatural theme. The protagonists of both series consists of a kind guy, a mysterious girl, and a woman who employed them. They had to deal with supernatural phenomenons in their jobs. One of the protagonist of both series also have mystic eyes. Kara no Kyoukai and Notes are early Kinoko Nasu works. They are good examples of his signature writing style of non-linear, mythology heavy stories with interesting characters spouting their philosophies at any given chance. Notes. is more dense and even comes with a sort of glossary to keep track of its lore while Kara no Kyoukai helps the reader understand the lore better over the course of the books. Kara no Kyoukai has aged better but both are very much worth reading if you are a fan of Kinoko Nasu or of philosophical works of a supernatural flair.

Girl with mysterious background is involved with strange occurences, including a murder. Both series also have a storytelling structure that might be a bit confusing at first.

Being set in the same multiverse, those works take the same elements and weave a different story with them. Both have a knife-weilding protagonist with mystical eyes of perception that allows them to be able to slice apart every object and living being. There's also Shiki and SHIKI personalities that acts as kind of opposites to each other. The dynamics between the protagonist and their love interest is also kinda similar.

Dark, complex, and weird, these two older series may interest the light novel reader looking for something a bit different from the norm. Anyone who enjoys one should look into the other.
