Damn man, that was a lot to take. It's probably partially due to the fact I just lost a family member in an accident, but Kengo and Kyousuke's parts really tore me apart. Having that still very fresh reality to relate to this, I think I can say they nailed every bit of it from an emotional standpoint. Yeah Kyoani does the emotional bits really well most of the time, but I think JC did a great job with it. The only negative is that some of the impact wasn't right there in your face due to lazy efforts in buildup like VN readers have mentioned. Even though some stuff was pretty heavily implied(like the whole 'turning your eyes away/running away from your conflict' theme, I think a better job of bringing it full circle with Kengo and Riki/Rin could have been done for more impact.

I am sure the sequence was more impactful in the VN, but I think JC Staff did a very good job in conveying the emotional/psychological struggle, especially with Riki being so strong and showing his development.

They did justice to Kyouske. And They pretty much had every line from the VN during this part. The only thing I disliked was Masato's farewell. What a disappointment that was. They really killed Masato's character.

Anyways still great episode and well deserves all the 5 out of 5s.

Didn't expect them to dedicate a whole episode to this. But I'm so glad they did, it really deserved a full episode worth. The farewells hit me just as hard, if not more. Amazingly adapted. I loved the part at the end where Kyousuke sits in his desk and everyone else appears. I liked that little touch.

Only 2 more episodes to go....

damn. that scene with kyosuke was legit. if this was the climax scene for refrain, i can see why refrain was hyped up (although disappointing that it only has one 'teary' moment -- maybe there will be more in the next 2 episodes). but yeah, im sure he felt the most pain as the leader, as he's both the observer as well as the instigator. almost anohana status.

I couldn't have asked for a better adaption for this particular of Little Busters that JC Staff just served us right here! Kudos for them for staying literally 1:1 mirror to the Visual Novel, and of course some tiny bits were added here and there, but in a whole picture it was emotional, painful and heart wrecking to watch, which is one of the corner stones for Refrain, and why it is regarded so high by many people.

Faraway by Haruka Kanata was as good as timed as it was in the VN, and honestly I was a bit afraid they wouldn't use that song for Goodbye scenes, and thankfully having watched LB from the very beginning as it aired and I knew they would insert that song or otherwise expected some really angry fans. That song alone adds some momentum to the scenes and it plays really beautifully in the background as they say goodbye, Kyousuke's one of course being emotional as it can be.

I was really glad to see the final moments of the world in Kyousuke's perspective. As he goes around the world where everyone played and the world disappears around him as he sits at his desk content with what he has achieved in his life.

The next two episodes will hopefully have a worthy good bye that is adapted well from the VN! This is important!

So I guess I sorta got carried away with watching Refrain. From ep.2 to ep.11 all in a few hours. What did I do with my sleep O.o

Anyways, so far this adaptation had been great. I just didn't like the Masato dere this episode. In the VN, he was a lot more serious. Kengo and Kyousuke we're both good, that last Kyousuke scene.

I thought I could hold off my tears but when Kyousuke started crying, I can't hold it any longer T^T. Haruka Kanata only makes it more emotional.

Love this episode.2 more to go.

Anyway, definitely one of the saddest episode that I have ever watched, especially Kyousuke's parting.

Anyway, the whole JC vs KyoAni adaptation debate wouldn't exist this big if there's no LB VN translation OR if there's a Clannad VN translation before the TV airing. Guess how many Clannad VN readers will rage when they butchered several heroine routes COMPLETELY if someone released the VN translation before.

This adaptation is not perfect, of course. But it has overall better storyline and Kyousuke basically not only carry the whole alternative world, but also the whole anime. +1 to character favorite.

Well, that's it. 5/5.

sigh... zeroyuki92. Your argument is pretty weak..

>Comparing Masato's farewells to Clannad heroine routes
>Implying Fuko or Kotomi's routes were "butchered" in the anime. The LB anime didn't have a single route that was as well adapted to anime as those.
>Disregarding that After Story slowed down the pacing to be closer and truer to the VN and gave it 14 masterful episodes.

The only way the KyoAni vs. JC Staff debate wouldn't happen is if KyoAni never adapted Key's works in the first place. The adaptation as a stand-alone anime-only series has plenty of issues on its own, and many of them are a result of JC Staff, not the source material.

Every negative post I've seen on crunchyroll or reddit regarding anime-only viewers' issues with this series are resolved through the VN, because their taste in Key works led them to like Clannad and Angel Beats for their comedy and melodrama, but they couldn't take one of Key's most climactic events ever conceived seriously at all, or even like the characters.

The lack of characterization for Riki and having it be mostly internal and restated by Kyousuke, the rushed pacing which can be almost like whiplash as you're not really eased into who really matters in the story, especially when people have expectations for Rin as a heroine in episode 6, and 5 episodes later see that she's been a doll and that Kyousuke is suddenly the hero of the series, and the weak comedy and dramatic buildup + execution in a lot of cases is just not ideal.

VN readers don't realize that Rin and Refrain worked like a puzzle for the story, and there weren't a lot of pieces worth throwing out, and they threw out a lot of the most vital parts to keep the series going smooth. Riki's growth in Rin 2 led to his motivations to become stronger and intensified feelings for Rin, and actually made her being a dummy in Refrain more realistic. Combine this with the fact that you're dealing with friendship in a serious manner and you get a show that can easily fall short of expectations.

Fml why am I even wasting my time here anymore.
It's obvious that the logic is all thrown back in my face as "VN bias" or "KyoAni bias" at this point, bu people continue to start arguments like this.

T___T Tears started to form during Kyousuke's part.. and the last time I've ever even started to cry at an anime was the last few episodes of the first season of Sailor Moon, 6 years ago.
I also don't think it had as much impact as the visual novel, but still, compared to how the rest of the anime was adapted.. not bad.
That part where Riki called out for Kyousuke, telling him he loved him. ;__; ALL THE LOVE! Friendship love is just as great as romance love!~ I believe LB! is Key's greatest work, due to the themes it portrays.

Well, now to go drive 600 miles~

@Vladz0r Sigh, no wonder the comparison still afloat up till now...
(spoiler tagged to avoid ruining this thread any further)

That concludes my final opinion about this matter. I appreciate high passion and love for Little Busters! for dear VN veterans here, but please, bring the VN comparison and other elitist attitudes away from episodic threads. Discussing things like that for once is okay, but I've been fed up at seeing these same kind of arguments for 37 (and more) weeks. Yes, yes, VN>Anime, now let's just accept that common fact and move on. If there's anyone who insist that the adaptation is simply "JC take a dump on the original material", I suggest that kind of person to simply leave and read the VN again. Nobody force you to see the adaptation that you hate anyway.

Looks like everyone had mixed feelings about the Masato and Kengo's farewell, and Kyousuke's farewell was well received. I'd just like to chime in to share that I ended up bawling my eyes out to all three brothers. Having read the VN and followed both anime seasons, most likely had nostalgia factor in to explain why I felt strongly for the three, despite Masato's adaptation(in agreement with a few users) being a bit off.

I thought the episode was pretty solid, and I thank JC for not omitting/fluffing too much for such an important episode. The one gripe I had, the same gripe I had in the VN, was Rin's indifference to the entire situation which I had hoped JC would have at least tried something with that.

God damn, Refrain is so good. It STILL makes me upset that the first season was so bad, because that will be people's introduction to this. I'll basically have to go "the first season isn't good, but the second season is REALLY good!"

I think I'll just tell people to read Kud, Haruka, Mio, and Komari's route information online so they'll get caught up and can go straight to the second season, because this is honestly a colossal improvement.

Anyway, this episode was fine. Like someone said earlier, I think they botched Masato's farewell, since I felt it was much stronger in the VN, but Kengo and Kyousuke's were both excellent, though I think it helped that Faraway was playing. I was afraid for a moment that they would change the song to something else, thank god I was wrong. Didn't get me to shed any tears, but it was still really sad. Overall, I think JC Staff did a good job with this episode!

I hate to say it, but I'm kind of underwhelmed. I haven't experienced the VN, but I have experienced Angel Beats, and I kind of feel like the twist is mostly just that universe, with an endless recursion of time tossed in the mix. The only moment that really got to me in this episode was watching the extended cast disappear from the field. I feel like I should have been hit by a truck, but I didn't. Maybe it's due to time constraints, but Masato, Kengo, and Kyousuke just don't feel all that well developed, especially compared to the rest of the cast. With this arc revolving pretty heavily around them, it all just kind of feels flat compared to the individual character arcs, all of which I thought were particularly good.
