Hmmm I don't get it at all

Hey,

I just started watching Akagi because I'm a huge fan of Kaiji (I watch it about 1.5 times per year or so).
But.... unlike Kaiji's games that I could follow, I don't understand anything here.

The explanations go way too fast, and there are also way too many of them in a minute.
As much as the show looks great (saw 2 episodes for now), it removes a lot of it for me as I don't really get what is happening / good or bad...

Any tip for me?

Well I ended up reading wikipedia, a dedicated website and playing for a couple hours.
That brought me up to speed a bit, but still nowhere enough haha :)

Ya Mahjong can be a little confusing at first. Fortunately, I've played a bit, albeit in Cantonese not Japanese. The game has a fairly simple concept based around pairing, having consecutive tiles, etc. There are more complicated hands and ways of winning I haven't learned yet as I've only played family games. Much of the strategy is in choosing what to discard as to not benefit your opponent.

Right, I got that but still.. It's not as fun to not be able to follow at the right pace...

Oh well, for the next run of Akagi I should do better :)

I've tried watching Akagi with my girl as she really enjoyed Kaiji, she really didn't like it as she couldn't follow anything... but unlike me she had no real desire to learn Mahjong so we didn't get very far :)
