Apparently it's 7 volumes, but there's no info about how many chapters theres to be found in each one, yet it seems to be a completed "series". Kind of annoying. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Higurashi can be a confusing storyline, but that's what I love about it. It was originally a computer mystery game where you try to find out who dunnit. The series is several arcs (6 in the anime), with the questions arc followed by the answers arc. Each arc is a separate story with a main plot, each of which compliment the other arcs and start expanding your view on the mystery. I'm currently reading Higurashi as they come out via the library but am not gonna list it on here because it's so confusing. Try http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/manga/higurashi-when-they-cry-manga-arcs/t.60013609/ to figure out what order you want to go at. I don't think it actually matters what order you read them in, as long as you read the Kai (answer arcs) last.

Hope that helps. By the way Higurashi is in my top 5, I love it!
