you can watch them if you want. none of them are actually horrible, it's just that their super average in comparison to the original OVA and lack pretty much all of the artistic bits and originality of FLCL.
Progressive's first 5 episodes are super mid and pretty boring, but the last episode was actually pretty solid with better music and animation for the finale episode, doesn't make up for how bad the start was though.
Alternative is actually a soft reboot of the series, it's definitely better than Progressive in terms of music, voice acting, and the color pallet was closer to the original. none of this stopped the show from being painfully boring and is still not really worth the watch.
I haven't watched the other two new anime, I'm pretty sure Grunge is a remake and Shoegaze is a direct sequel to Alternative.

Just not a fan of rating. My mind is always changing on what I would actually rate a series and usually end up finding it pointless, would rather just have a little note next to a series that left certain impressions.

I've seen Grunge and am currently watching Alternative, but as far as I can tell none of the spinoffs have any relation to the original series.

My advice would be to watch them in release order if you choose to watch them at all, as it seems that Shoegaze (Part 5) is a sequel to Alternative (Part 3).

I'm also sure there are other things I missed by watching out of order.

I believe the original was just a standalone project, so you can watch it as a self-contained story. The first sequel didn't come about until 18 years after that :/

I mean, this was pretty bad and I heard the sequels are worse, so if you have the time, try it out, if not, then don’t.

@BrolyTheLegend they are jsut a reaaaly bad attempt to recreate the magnifisence of flcl. I barely remember the sequals and the one that is airing now is fun but it's not flcl. Don't watch them.

The sequels are absolutely terrible save yourself the time and do not watch. Rewatch the original masterpiece dubbed if you need a FLCL fix.

What sequels? There are no sequels. Anything that has the name FLCL aside from the original series is cheap garbage cash grabbers. Stay away from them (specially grunge).

Prog and Alt suck.
Grunge is a love-it-or-hate-it deal.
Shoegaze is cute, but it's the only one without Haruko.

Just stick to the original.

The sequels mishandle a good deal of the themes that made the original so endearing, and when they do include them they are so overt its insulting. I think they can be a fun watch, and luckily don't retroactively ruin the original for me; but they are absolutely not a necessity

honestly

i watched all recently (except shoegaze and grunge, they are ongoing and really shit, especially the x arms level cgi one)

theyre all good, you can watch any in any order

the later seasons just include easter eggs from past seasons which i havent seen in other animes

i enjoyed all seasons but my favourite would be either the first or second one

and yes its a bit wierd, its flcl after all
